Or D. Zill and W. Wright, Advanced Engineering Mathematics, 4th Ed., John and Bartlett, 2010.
COURSE DESCRIPTION:
Line and surface integrals; vector fields with the study of Green, Gauss and Stokes Theorems; Applications of
vector field theory; Fourier series, complex analysis.
GOALS:

A required course for the Aerospace Engineering, Electrical Engineering, Engineering Physics degrees,
MA441 strives to provide students with enough mathematical tools to solve problems encountered in their
upper level courses.

PERFORMANCE OBJECTIVES:
1.
Evaluate the line integral of the vector field over a path, given a vector field and the three-dimensional
path.
2.
Calculate the divergence, the curl and the equations of the flow line, given a vector field.
3.
Calculate the Laplacian of a scalar-valued function and determine whether or not a given scalar function
is harmonic.
4.
Test whether or not a vector field is conservative.
5.
Calculate the scalar potential function for a conservative vector field and use it to evaluate line integrals.
6.
Apply these techniques to problems in science and engineering.
7.
Calculate the surface integral of a vector field, given the vector field and the equation of the surface or
geometric description of the surface.
8.
Apply the Divergence, Stokes and Greens Theorems to the computation of line integrals, surface
integrals and volume integrals.
9.
Apply these theorems to the computation of line integrals, surface integrals and volume integrals.
10. Prove the analyticity of a complex function using the Cauchy Riemann Equations
11. Calculate a complex line integral directly and by using a parametric representation
12. Calculate a complex line integral using Cauchys integral Theorem and formulas
13. Calculate the derivatives of an analytic function
14. Determine the Fourier coefficients of the Fourier series of a given function
15. Identify and classify Partial Differential Equations
16. Solve the heat, and wave equations using separation of variables

Optional Final Exam

25%

Total Points

100%

Border-line case considerations, will be based on PERFECT attendance and participation.

homework will count towards your final grade.

Eight best

Homework:
Homework will be collected every Tuesday and Thursday unless announced. It will be evaluated on
completeness, correctness and presentation. You MUST show your work to receive credit. All homework must
be done in a 8.5x11inch paper and MUST be stapled.
Exams:
Exams will be announced at least two class periods in advance. All the mid-term exams are mandatory.
Missing an examination without my prior approval will result in a grade of zero for that exam.
Grading:
A90 to 100

B...80 to 89

C70 to 79

D60 to 69

F0 to 59.

CALCULATORS:
All students are recommended to have a calculator, although not mandatory. Tests are designed assuming
that all students have a calculator. Calculators cannot be passed during tests. Graphing/programmable
calculators are NOT allowed during tests or quizzes.
ATTENDANCE:
Attendance is not mandatory, but to receive extra help or grade consideration you must attend class regularly.
When a student attends a lecture, they should stay for the entire class period. Unless a student is ill, they may
not leave without prior permission from the instructor.
PREREQUISITES:
Students without proper prerequisites may be administratively dropped.
FINAL EXAM:
The comprehensive final exam is optional and will be administered on Thursday, June 23, 2016
