The fuel oil high-pressure pipes between fuel pumps and fuel valves come in two different versions:
double-walled or protective hose type.
We have received a small number of claims concerning failure of pipes of the protective hose type.
The reason for the failures is vibration of the pipes, resulting in a varying bending stress in the union
connections of the pump-end of the pipes, and eventually in fatigue cracking of the pipes. In some
cases, the cracks propagated from notches formed at the top end of the threaded thrust bushings,
which were produced with a geometry diverging from the specification in being too sharp-edged . In
other cases, no geometrical divergences were found, but the crack initiation points were found in
heavily fretted areas of the pipe outer surfaces. Fretting reduces the fatigue strength of the material
considerably.
The thrust bushing is slit in the top end in order to clamp tightly around the pipe when the conical
face of the union is tightened down against it. However, the fretted interface between the thrust
bushing and the pipe indicates that the clamping is insufficient.
In order to improve the clamping, thrust bushings with deeper slits have been designed. The deep
slits increase the radial flexibility of the bushing, resulting in more firm contact in the interface.
Hereby, the fretting is eliminated.

The thrust bushings with deep slits are introduced with the action code X2, for pipes with outer
diameter 25 mm.
For pipes of outer diameter 24 mm (L60MC and L70MC engines) and 30 mm (S80 and S90 engines),
the deep slit design is introduced with Action Code X3. We have no reports of this kind of failure for
24 mm and 30 mm pipes, thus the softer action code.

We have attached our Drawing No. 1399848-8 with the deep slit design and our Drawing No.
0822725-9 with the former design for comparison. We also attach Drawing No. 1399521-6 as an
example of the union/thrust bushing arrangement. All active design specifications concerned must be
updated and the documentation will be forwarded to all Licensees.
