CANOWINDRA READING DAY
Preparations are well under way for the
first Canowindra Reading Day to be held
Friday 28 May 2010. The theme for the
day is “Growing Great Readers” and will
focus on the importance of Early Literacy
for children from birth to 8 years old.
The Canowindra Reading Day is being
organized by Sheryll Selwood from
Cabonne Council’s Family Links Service
and Kirstin Stevenson from Home-Start
Cowra/Canowindra.
According to Sheryll Selwood, “The
Canowindra Reading day is for all families
in Canowindra. We are going to have a
range of activities for kids from babies to
school age that are all about encouraging
literacy in children. We will also have a
jumping castle; face painting and a
sausage sizzle and pre-school eye
screening all for free!”
“We have had great support from the
schools, Canowindra Public School and St
Edward’s Catholic School and from
Canowindra Pre-school and Cabonne
Family Day Care.” said Kirstin Stevenson.
“We are hoping for a great day. Everyone
is welcome to come and join in the fun
including parents, carers and
grandparents,” added Sheryll.
The Canowindra Reading Day will be held

NEW SES HEADQUARTERS
Canowindra’s State Emergency Services
Unit will have a new home after Cabonne
Council purchased the former National
Auctions building as a new SES head-
quarters for the town.
The building on Canowindra’s northern
outskirts has been vacant for several
years, but Council recognised it could
provide not only a state-of-the-art SES
headquarters in a flood-free area, but
room for a future expansion and
relocation of the Council depot.
Cabonne Mayor Kevin Duffy said the
Armstrong Street site also had the
potential to be developed for future
commercial and industrial land.
He said it was a strategic purchase that
was a cheaper option than building a
new SES facility.
‘’Council has a responsibility to provide
suitable facilities for local SES
operations,’’ Cr Duffy said.
Cr Duffy said the SES had provided
$150,000 towards the cost of purchasing
and fitting out the new building.

OPEN GIRLS SOCCER
Canowindra High School Open Girls
Soccer team recently visited Blayney to
play their Round 2 State KO game. This
became a thrilling encounter fought
against a tough and well drilled
opponent in Blayney High, on a hot
Autumn day, on a bizarre field that
resembled a cow paddock (complete
with odour).
Blayney drew first blood early in the
game. Canowindra then replied with a
resounding runaway goal that singed the
net, scored by Janelle Zahra, who played
the game of her life. The girls kept the
score to one all through most of the
match with brutal defence from Bonny
Wythes, Ebony Watson and Brittany
Baker and an outstanding and at times
miraculous performance by Kimberly
Workman in goal.
Canowindra were unlucky not to score
on more occasions with more onslaughts
from Janelle, Taneil Thornberry and
Gabrielle Upton. Caitlin Walker, Peta
Edwards and Theika McNaught were
excellent in their play making and they
were well supported by Monique Jenart,
Nicole Stevenson and Casey Edwards.
However in the ensuing attack, Blayney
were able to score again against the run
of play. This was to prove the difference
and our girls ran out of time to win the
game back. This was a courageous effort
from both sides.

interested in establishing a Sing Australia
group in Canowindra. Although it was a
cold evening, the group found a cosy
corner in the Canowindra Bowling Club
where they unanimously expressed their
interest in going ahead with a local
group. Thank you to Marion Wilson for
being the accompanist on the night.

warmer weather, and anyone who is
interested in taking a role such as
accompanist, conductor or one of the
