INTRODUCTII Aquaflex SP-AO resin is designed to rreet the needs of the global hair care market. Aquafiex $F-40 resin is a new patentee, mutti-use, high performance, versatile. global hair fixative polymer. It is cffectiva in $84 VOC, AAS VOC and anhyttrous hair spray pump and aerosol systems. ‘Acuafiex SF-40 resin possesses a unique combination of characteristics; it is a water-soluble hair fixative polymer With nigh propetant tolerance. Aquafiex SF-40 gives superior hold at lov solids levels in high humidity conditions and does not require neutralization. Products can be created with a flexible or stiff feel, just ‘by modifying the percent salics in the formulation, Key features of Aquaflex SF-40 resin: @ Effective in 55% VOC, 80% VOC and anhydrous systems © Yields both floxible fool and stiff Yeo! finished products @ Requires no neutralization © Extremely high propellant tolerance © Hydrolytically stable © Has excellent high humidity curl retention © Provides superior holding at low solids © Low tack © Fast dry times © Suitable for either pump or acrosol systems @ Low solution viscosity in 55% VOC formulations. When formulators are faced with reducing VOC's, they must remove alcohol and/or propellants. and replace these ingredients with water or non-VOC propellants. By increasing the water cantent of Nair spray formulations, the Formulator may be faced ‘with the following issues: larger particle size. poor spray Patterns, can corrosion, polymer hydrolysis, and compatiblity issues with solvents, propetants and additive ingredients, Performance of the hair spray is also compromised with decreased hald, increased tackiness. beading on the hair. style droop and longer dry times. In high VOC systems, when replacing alcohol with more propellant, formulators can encounter hydrocarbon intolerance with certain polymars. ‘Aquafiex SF-40 resin, a new product from Internationa! Specialty Products (ISP), solves most of the formulation problems associated with adding more water or more propellant. CONSUMERS’ NEEDS Consumers require a hair spray that remains in place under the highest humidity conditions, that ismot wet and sticky on their hair, and maintains their style after comb through. ‘A new type of hair spray consumer is also emerging: one who realizes that he or she does not have to sacrifice hold for a hairstyle that is flexible to the tauch. FORMULATORS’ NEEDS | ‘The objective of the formulation chemist is to find a product that meets all necessary regulatory requirements as well as the performance demands af the marketplace. In the USA, this translates into developing hair sprays Which meet low VOC requirements and match the performance of current products. Aquaflex" SP-40 resin atlows the formutator to accomplish both goats In Europe. the current trends are flexible products with good hold, Aquaflex SF-40 resin affers flexible film and excellent curl retention. It has high hydrocarbon tolerance, making the cest of the formulation lower. Aquaflex SF-40 resin is compatible with up to 60% hydrocarbon propeltant, dependent upon the ethanol ‘used. With 200 proof ethanol, 60% hydrocarbon tolerance is achieved, while 40% hydrocarban tolerance Is achieved If 190 proof ethanol is used, In regions where a crunchy, stif fect hair style is preferred, formulatars can develop this type of product by adjusting the solids content of the Aquatlex SF-40 resin in the system, or by blending other ISP pyrralidane rocucts in the formulation. rN ad Aquafiex SF-40 is a terpolymer of vinyicaprotactam: {VCL). Vind Pyrrolidane (VF) and Dimethylaminopropy! ‘methacrylamide (DMAPA) and is supplied as 40% solits in-ethanol. Vinylpyrrolidone and DMAPA acrylates are welrproven building blocks of hair care potymers providing a pseudo-cationic nature at low pH ano water solubility. The incorporation of Vinyicaprolactamn into the structure results in outstanding hytrocarbon compatibility, by virtue of the sequence of five -CH2- Coroups in its rina. PERFORMANCE DA’ Aquafiex SF-40 is a film former with outstanding performance as.a hair fixative, Its high hokding power per Unit weight of resin means that it can be formulated at lower levels (as low as 1.5% solids) than most traditional fixative polymers. This holding ability is maintained under high humidity conditions, despite the pelymer’s solubility in water. Figure 4 llustrates curl retention properties of Aquafiex SF-A0 in a 4% resin solids pump formulation Asdepicted below. the tresses cons'stently maintained high hold even at a wide range of VOC bevels, Figure 1: Curl Retention Study - Four Cell - 4 Hr, Study Aquatles* SF.40 exhibits negligible tack in systems ranging from high to low VOC. Figure 2 llustrates the tack of an optimized 5% VOC pump spray as compared to other VOC levels. The data in figure 2:clearly shows that the addition of water does not increase tackiness. This parameter is important to some consumers, as the Stfmess of the tress has been equated with the effectiveness of the product. To meet the needs of this consumer, Sprays based on Aquafiex SF-dO resin can be made stiffer by increasing the percent solids in the formulation, or by [blending it with other ISP pyrrolidone based polymers like PVP K-30 for aerosols and PYPIVA E-735 for pumps. ‘or gum rosin. Figure 4 ilustrates that a 55% VOC pump spray with 3.5% resin solids level of Aquaflex SF-40 is as stiff as two commercially avalable 80% VOC pump hair sprays based on acrytamide. when measured by Oynamic Hair Spray Analysis techniques. HYDROLYTIC STABII One of the problems encountered upon switching a hair fiative formulation from an antydrous system to a water containing system is the hytrolytic stability of the resulting product, Aquaflex SF-40 resin was designed specifically to circumwent these problems. ‘The polymeric structure of Jiquaflex SF-40 contains cithor acid functionality or ester groups that could hydrotyze te acids. The aming groups. which impart ‘edditional holding characteristics to the resin, are ‘attached to the polymer backbone through hydrolytically stable amide linkages. CORROSION RESISTANCE For low VOC aerosol products, the addition of water to the hair spray system increases the potential for corrosion. When manufacturing. only deionized water should be used in the compaunding, Tap water containing as little as 15 ppm of chlorido will accelerate corrosion, In addition, both liquid and vaper phase inhibitors are needed in the formula. The use level for liquid phase inhibstors is 0:1 - 0.4% and for vapor phase inhibitors 0.1 - 0.3% After extensive corrosion screening, the following inhibitors have been shown to be effective in'55% VOC systems: Ingredient Inhibits Corrosion in Dimethyl Oxazclidine Vapor Phase Ammonium Hydroxide Vapor Phase MEA Borate and MIPA Borate Liguid Phase MOLECULAR WEIGHT The molecular weight of Aquafiex SF-40 resin was specifically designed to deiver a spray pattern with good Particle size while maintaining the hold characteristics ‘that make it an effective hair spray at any VOC level Refer to the summary chart for details SOLUBILITY Aquaflex SF-40 resin is soluble in water, ethanol, anc low VOC mixtures. Since itis soluble in water as well as. alcohol, Aquaflex $F-40 is easily removed from the har by shampoo in hat of cold water. The incorporation of \vinylcaprolactam into the polymer leads to increased hydrocarbon compatibility and improved solubility, HYDROCARBON TOLERANCE Aquafiex* S#-40 resin has excellent compatibiity wth all types of aerosol propellants. In high VOC formulations, dependent upon the ethanol used. Aquaflex SF-40 is, ‘compatible with up to 60% hycrocarbon propellant. With 200 proof ethanol, 60% hydrocarbon tolerance is achieved. while 40% hydrocarbon tolerance is achieved with 190 proof ethan, Aquaflex SF.40 resin is also compatibie up to 80% with DME. ‘Tnisis a crttcal feature in partsof the world where systems tend to have a high degree of propellant andt high hydtrocerbon tolerance is necessary.
