Nanotechnology Field Trip

CTE Center at Olean

Online Students in Career
and Technical Education's
Introduction to
Nanotechnology course
visited the CTE Center at
Olean in May for a hands
on demonstration of the
Scanning Electron
Microscope.

Students from
Cattaraugus Little Valley,
Prattsburg, and Wellsville
investigated sand,
filaments, and insects with
the microscope. They
practiced viewing images
and running element
diagnosis.

Nanotechnology
deals with dimensions and
tolerances of less than 100
nanometers

How small is that?

The prefix "nano" means
one-billionth, or 10-9; one
nanometer is one-billionth of
a meter.
Most people are around
2 m tall
A human hair is about
100,000 nm thick
A strand of human DNA
is 2.5 nm in diameter
