TEACHING:
Motivation:
Students generally find time working with computer applications enjoyable. There
should be a great deal of intrinsic motivation for this lesson (Note: May need to add an
additional component for students with previous programming experience).
Instruction:
Students should have some previous experience in basic PowerPoint use and
development (not necessarily programming) that includes:
o Opening and closing the app
o Creating new slides
o Advancing slides
o Adding and modifying images and text boxes
In a group setting, explain to the class that they will be working on a project to assist
them in the preparation for their upcoming exam on the Air Pollution unit
Read and explain the Game Story & Instruction Slides from the Save Us from the
Haze PowerPoint template

help them prepare (Note: they will only use
the best four).
At the Computer
Day Two
1. Direct the students to open the Save Us
from the Haze PowerPoint.
2. Review the following objects, their use and
where to locate them:
a. Slides/Creating New &
Changing Layouts
b. Text Box
c. Adding Images

Day Two
1. Open Save Us from the Haze
PowerPoint Template
2. Take notes and try a few changes on the
following objects, their use and where to
locate them:
a. Slides/Creating New & Changing
Layouts
b. Text Box

3. Provide instruction on the new objects that

will be required for this task, their use and
where to locate them:
a. CommandButtons
b. OptionButtons
4. Direct the students to the Developers Tab
and show them the location of Properties
5. Demonstrate how to changes various
properties of the objects previously
discussed and have students write down the
following properties they may change via
code later
a. Name
b. Caption
6. Direct the students back to the Developers
Tab and show them the location of View
Code
7. Review the previous coded windows and
have students locate where they will make
their changes to the Option Button that
identifies the right answer when selected
8. Let students work freely making changes
for the rest of class. Let them know they
will start with a clean template in the next
session. No changes made today will not
affect their work on Day #3
9. Answer questions as they arise
Day #3
1. Direct the students to open the Save Us
from the Haze PowerPoint and provide
them their corrected written questions.
2. Walk students through the changes
necessary on Slide 9, the first question.
3. Allow students to continue at their own
pace and answer any questions
4. Before class ends they should save their
version of the assignment
Day #4
1. Direct the students to open their own
assignments.
2. Instruct have the class to administering
their games while the others play them.
Both the administrator and the playing
student should take notes on the quality of

changes the location of the right answer
Work freely making changes to the
PowerPoint and seeing the results.
Ask clarifying questions until the end of
class

Day #3
1. Open the Save Use from the Haze
PowerPoint, review instructors notes on
corrected written questions and ask
clarifying questions.
2. Follow along as instructor explains the
necessary changes to Slide 9
3. Work at your own pace to complete all
four slides
4. Save your version of the assignment in the
location indicated by the instructor
Day #5
1. Each student should open their individual
version of the Save Us from the Haze
PowerPoint.
2. Take turns both administering and playing
the other students games. Take notes on

game and play to use for the survey later

After the Computer
Day #4
1.
Direct students to complete a survey
regarding each students game and play
2.
Compile the data, determine winners and
note anything you should address with the
class for clarity
Day #5
1. Acknowledge winners and review as
necessary for assessment

the quality of game and play to use for the

survey later
Day #4
1. Complete the survey and return to the
instructor

Day #5
1. Take notes, prepare for the assessment
and ask clarifying questions

Comments

I dont have to actually click the buttons for it to advance

You informed me that you were using the defaults colors, but
dont forget to change them. I think blue would work well

since youre talking about air

How old are the children? Will they know what the word

vet means? What is the Reward?

I think you forgot this slide. The audience and learning

7 - 10

objectives were not written.

Make the font for Score larger. 10 pt is too small

Best Feature(s) of this project:

Im not sure how the student will modify the PowerPoint to make this work, but I think this will
get them excited because its not a review where they just sit and listen to the lecture.
Ways to improve this project:
Slides were weird in a few places. Like if I accidentally didnt click the button its still
advanced, and I lost a point.
Other Comments:
Good job!

Lessons Learned: Reflecting on My Project

1. What was good or effective in your project?

I believe that adding coding to this project will make the rigor of doing a class
review more entertaining for the students. Hopefully, they will get into trying to
stump their classmates because the competition and review thoroughly without
recognizing the efforts.

2. How would you improve your project?

If I did a project like this again, I would remember to more than double the
required prep. I was stuck very long on some wonky parts of the VB coding.
Additionally, because it was simple code I just jumped right in. Next time, Ill
have a written plan before starting because when it was time to debug I didnt
believe I was ever going to get done.

3. What did you learn from creating this project (not about software), and how can
you use what you learned in the future?
I learned that I need to look at the MS Office Suite differently. I would have never
thought to use it for an assignment like this. I need to me more creative in how I
ask the students to work, and look for opportunities to play.
