Report @ Pg. 6

Hola hombres! My name is Lewis Oliver, and I have the honour and the
privilege of being the WAPSA president for 2016.

Exclusive Interview
@ Pg. 7-8
Golf + Quotes @ Pg. 9

I am currently a third year student in the B.Pharm course at Curtin

University, and previously held positions of First Year Representative and
Social Chair in 2014 and 2015 respectively. Im more than happy to talk
to you about your pharmacy studies, AFL or anything WAPSA related, so
please feel free to pop into the WAPSA room in building 306 any time for
a chat.
We started this year off with an absolute banger of an O-show,
wonderfully organised by our amazing Social Secretaries Mary and
Xaysja, where we had an awesome turn out from the newbies in First
Year. Our next event was the hugely successful Charity Movie Night at
Hoyts Carosel, where we saw a private screening of Captain America:
Civil War. We raised over $1000 for Cystic Fibrosis Australia! Thanks to
our Charity Chair for organising the event. Education saw a double
training event take place, with asthma device training from Asthma
Foundation WA followed by Ego Product training, all organised by our
Education Chair Joshua Jones. The semester was wrapped up with the
Cocktail Party at Niche Bar in Leederville, which once again did not fail to
impress.
Weve continued our new tradition of having a UWA UWAMPS
(previously MOPSS) student as our Vice President, and Patrick and I have
and will continue to work together to further strengthen our ties
between the two awesome universities.
Weve got plenty of fun, amazing and exciting events coming up next
semester, which I hope to see you all at. I wish you all a fun and relaxing
break, and when you come back next semester, WAPSA may be looking a
little different

2016 has been an eventful year at UWA so far and the momentum is still
building. We've had great success in building a stronger relationship
between WAPSA and UWAMPS (previously MOPSS) to heighten the
learning experience for pharmacy students across Western Australia. We
are busy planning some exciting social and educational events to be
enjoyed by both Curtin and UWA students. Make sure you keep your eye
out for a Back to Uni party and get your WAPSA Gala Ball ticket early as
its bound to be a night not to forget. UWA will be hosting a pharmacy
careers forum to help pharmacy students get further direction, advice
and ideas for their future careers from experienced pharmacists and
relevant industry professionals. Last but not least, UWA will be facing off
against Curtin in the annual WAPSA soccer tournament next semester.
It's bound to be a fierce competition so make sure you come and barrack
for your university!

Social Update
We started the year with a bang at our
inaugural O-Show! Held at the Collins
Street Centre, pharmacy students new
and old welcomed the year with pizza,
and of course the traditional WAPSA
punch. Giant Jenga, treasure hunt and
boat races kept everyone entertained
and was a chance for students to meet
people in different years, different
universities and even different
countries! Shout out to the lovely
exchange students from Norway, we
hope you enjoyed the Australian style
party and your first taste of goon!
Once the stress of exams was over we
had the chance to celebrate again at the
end of Semester Cocktail party at Niche
bar. Suited up in our finest rags we
sipped cosmos and amaretto sours and
danced the night away.
Thanks to everyone who came and
helped out at our events, we couldnt
have done it without you!
Next up for us the WAPSA ball on
August 13th at the Hyatt Regency Hotel.
Our enchanted wonderland is sure to be
a fantastic night, so dont forget to pick
up your tickets! [https://

Wow what a semester it has been!

Our Charity Cup this year was indeed a very successful one. Events and fundraising ranging from sausage sizzles
and cracking eggs on heads, to the HBF run and our Marvel-ous Movie Night!
WAPSAs aim for the semester was to raise a total of $4,500 for Cystic Fibrosis Australia, and we were very
determined to try and blow our target out of the water!
During the beginning of the six-week Charity Cup we started up with our weekly delicious sausage sizzle barbeques.
We even had the opportunity to hold one at our local Bunnings store in Victoria Park, which was a massive success.
Also during the six weeks, the WAPSA committee took it upon themselves to sell a total of 52 chocolate boxes,
raising over $1,000, what an achievement! Way to go WAPSA crew!
Next up was our Charity event of the year, the WAPSA Movie Night at Hoyts Carousel. This years Marvel movie,
Captain America: Civil War, was indeed one of the best Marvel movies so far with everyone choosing a side.
Everyone turned up in either red or blue for Team Iron Man or Team Captain America, with some people even
turning up in some really great costumes!! There was much fun to be had and we raised over $1,200 for Cystic
Fibrosis Australia from the event.
After the movie night WAPSA was really determined to raise more awareness and more money for Cystic Fibrosis
Australia and we joined in with the CrackaCure initiative. This crazy challenge required people to crack an egg;
whether it was on your head or in a pan, and to donate to the cause. I want to take this opportunity to thank
Louise Woodhams for taking it upon herself to be the first WAPSA member to start up the challenge within our
WAPSA community. It was really great to see so many people join in with the egg-cracking!
Finally, at the end of the 6 weeks a team of WAPSA members took it upon themselves to run the HBF Run for a
Reason. The weather even held up on the day after one of Perths worst storms flying in on Perth a couple of days
before. It was a really great event!
Overall, we raised over $5,100 for Cystic Fibrosis Australia, which is an amazing charity that supports those
suffering from the terrible disease Cystic Fibrosis and also helps with the research for a cure.
If youre wondering whats next. Well, stay tuned because we have a blood donation drive and a pharmacy
awareness week coming up! If you want to know more, or want to get involved, get in contact with me via Email of
Facebook.

Staff Vs Student Football Match Report

The Staff and Student teams both put in a great game but the younger side managed to claim the victory
with the last minute winning goal from our very own WAPSA president Lewis Oliver.
Both teams experienced major injury blows a few weeks before the game. The Staff team did not have
the service of the experience goalkeeper Lawrence Cheung due to his ankle injury. Meanwhile, the
skipper for the last 2 years for students side Nhan Do also missed out due to his ACL and meniscus tear.
However, he stepped up to be the referee for the game.
From the start of the 1st half, students tried to maintain possession by keeping a compact and high
defensive line formation. However, due to the lack of composure and a high pressing game from staffs
side, the game plan was ruined half a minute into the game, a quick switch from Mr Jorge Martinez sent
his Spanish colleague to a 1-on- 1 situation against keeper Ben Vo. The pharmacy Iniesta curled the ball
to the top right corner with ease after dribbling past the opponent goalie. After the goal, student team
woke up and made a few substitutions. Jassim and Hakeem were put on the field for Ishaan and Evelyn.
Those 2 changes altered the wave completely. They managed to score twice within 6 minutes and both of
the goals were assisted by Aung Du. During the rest of the 1st half, both sides were afraid of conceding so
they played slowly to maintain the score line.
During the break, Jorge
Martinez decided to
make a crucial change.
He moved up from
pivot to an attacker.
The alteration showed
the result immediately.
He made an amazing
solo and dribbled past 3
players from student
side and produced a
screamer from 20
yards. 3 minutes later,
Jorge made a through
pass which was so
sharp that only Pirlo
could do that. Proff Jeff
Hughes received the
ball in an easy position
and chipped our keeper
Ben. 3-2 for the staff
team and all students
were down. That was
when El Presidente
Lewis Oliver showed his leadership by cheering the whole team up. The morale started to go up slowly.
The trio Hakeem, Aung and Yu Seng who also play for SYG FC- produced one of the best team work goal
in the history. Aung finished it with a finess into the bottom corner and forced JB to pick up the ball inside
the net. 2 minutes left on the clock and everyone was thinking about a draw. A controversial call from the
referee happened. It seemed that Jassim pulled Jorge Martinez on the shirt but the referee let the game
played on. It allowed WAPSA president to have a break through against JB. He did not let the crowd
down and scored the winning goal.
After 2 years, the students finally claim a victory. The staffs team have something to work on until the
next game.

How long have you been at Curtin?

I've been coming here since I was 18 years old - so more than half my life! The
year that I graduated I started working here part time as a sessional
academic. They asked me back to help out in the labs for pharmaceutics, a
subject that I actually was awarded a supplementary exam for in my first
semester at university, but I got so terrified of the subject I put a lot of effort into
making sure that I never got a supplementary exam again and so I got very good
at it. After those initial laboratory sessions I got identified as being quite talented
in teaching so I started getting offered more and more sessional teaching work
until I was doing work in almost every subject area in the course.
Have you ever worked as a pharmacist?
Yes, I used to work 7 days a week. I would work here part-time and still hold
down a full time pharmacist position in community pharmacy. That might seem
crazy but coming to Curtin never actually felt like it was work which is why I made
it my career because I think if you find a job that you find highly amusing that you
get paid for it you're in the right place. I only stopped working in practice a few
years ago as I focused my spare time on gaining my PhD.
What's the most memorable part of your career so far?
It was pretty cool getting to be the unit coordinator of pharmaceutics, the subject
I nearly failed! I felt quite proud of that! That was really good to show that just
because you don't always do well in a unit, don't get down, just get determined
to work it out and who knows one day you could be the unit coordinator!
Also back when the course used to have a much stronger focus on pharmaceutics
than it does now, I was determined to try and change compounding from being
such a negative experience (that I perceived anyway) into something quite
positive. I'll never forget the day after I'd taken over the unit and made a lot of
changes to how the labs were conducted and I asked my group of students what
their favourite thing was in the course so far and they said compounding. I
thought at that moment I could retire.
What do you think you'd be doing if you hadn't pursued a career in pharmacy?
I'm really interested in neuroscience and when I was at uni it was a very new kind
of science. My research area is in education and learning which is partly
neuroscience, if I can move in that direction one day that would be very cool.

What's been your biggest career challenge?

I suppose just learning how to teach. We have actually quite a tricky job as
there's so many things that frame what we do, you've got to understand
all of that framework. You've got content that you teach, youve got
learning outcomes that you have to achieve, you've got a whole lot of
these standards and guidelines about how to do it. And youve got
individual students with individual needs. I suppose it was really
challenging trying to get your head around it all. You have academic
standards to maintain, standards of delivery and practice and then you
have to consider individual needs and situations. I think Curtin and
especially the School of Pharmacy do a terrific job at balancing all these
requirements.
What do you think of the changes that have been made to the course?
That's another challenging thing, again there are lots of things that get
imposed on courses from government requirements to faculty initiatives
so you just cant sit down and design what you want to design there's a lot
of other stakeholders that have a say in what you do. The cool thing is
every time you run a new course its a bit of an experiment to see how it
goes. You find out what works and what might need changes and then
make some tweaks. Students completing eVALUate is so essential to help
us work out what is working and what may need consideration so please
help us out and always complete this survey as student feedback is so
important to us when we plan and design the course and manage our
units.
What advice would you give to students?
Pharmacy is a fabulous stepping stone it leads on to lots of different things
in lots of different areas. Be a lifelong learner, when you finish your
pharmacy degree it will not be like you have reached the top of Mount
Everest, it is the equivalent of being at the base camp of Mount Everest
ready to climb it! You NEVER stop learnerembrace it, keep getting
experience and learning under your belt and enjoy the climb! And lastly
work hard but also have fun, do things you love, hang out with your
friends, have fabulous conversations with interesting people, be kind to
people and expect nothing in return.
