templewasfoundedin778,anditspresentbuildingswere
constructedin1633,orderedbytheTokugawaIemitsu.[3]There
isnotasinglenailusedintheentirestructure.Ittakesitsname
fromthewaterfallwithinthecomplex,whichrunsoffthe
nearbyhills.Kiyomizumeansclearwater,orpurewater.[4][5]

Thepopularexpression"tojumpoffthestageatKiyomizu"istheJapaneseequivalentoftheEnglishexpression
"totaketheplunge".[5]ThisreferstoanEdoperiodtraditionthatheldthat,ifoneweretosurvivea13mjumpfrom
thestage,one'swishwouldbegranted.234jumpswererecordedintheEdoperiodand,ofthose,85.4%
survived.[5]Thepracticeisnowprohibited.[5]
BeneaththemainhallistheOtowawaterfall,wherethreechannelsofwaterfallintoapond.Visitorscancatchand
drinkthewater,whichisbelievedtohavewishgrantingpowers.
Thetemplecomplexincludesseveralothershrines,amongthemtheJishuShrine,dedicatedtokuninushi,agod
ofloveand"goodmatches".[4]JishuShrinepossessesapairof"lovestones"placed18metersapart,whichlonely
visitorscantrytowalkbetweenwiththeireyesclosed.Successinreachingtheotherstonewiththeireyesclosed
impliesthatthepilgrimwillfindlove,ortruelove.[9]Onecanbeassistedinthecrossing,butthisistakentomean
thatagobetweenwillbeneeded.Theperson'sromanticinterestcanassistthemaswell.
Thecomplexalsooffersvarioustalismans,incense,andomikuji(paperfortunes).Thesiteisparticularlypopular
duringfestivals(especiallyatNewYear'sandduringoboninthesummer)whenadditionalboothsfillthegrounds
sellingtraditionalholidayfoodstuffsandsouvenirstothrongsofvisitors.[10]
In2007,Kiyomizuderawasoneof21finalistsfortheNewSevenWondersoftheWorld.[11]However,itwasnot
pickedasoneofthesevenwinningsites.
