Lesson Teaching Reflective Summary

Teacher Candidate for Science Endorsement: Janice Belcher

School: Dowell Elementary

Grade: Second

Lesson Topic: Electricity-STEM

Write a brief summary or blog of your experiences teaching this lesson,
addressing the following questions:

What went well? What did not go well?

This lesson plan incorporated STEM activities. I began the lesson plan
by identifying the key standards that would be explored. The standard
that I chose to explore is that students will explore sources of energy
and how the energy is used. I was able to set a clear objective for my
lesson which would entail students designing a turbine which would
produce the most energy. This weeks resources outlined the
importance of students being engaged in the learning. The amount
of time that students spend doing the science will have a direct effect
on their level of engagement that being said, I replaced lecture with
online activities, and collaborative groups.

How well were the lessons student performance objectives

attained?

I have several students who are English Language Learners, two

students with special needs, and four students who receive
intervention services in reading. The amount of scaffolding I provided
in my lesson will assist these students in understanding the content. I
also included various hands on activities to engage my kinesthetic
learners. Nonlinguistic representations are provided through the use of
pictures. I also read an article onto a PowerPoint through which my
struggling readers can listen and read along.

Did classroom activity center on science understanding, inquiry,

and sense-making by all students? Did your scientific content
knowledge enable you to support students construction of
knowledge and understanding of important scientific concepts
and processes?

Scaffolding information was necessary in this lesson in order to ensure

that students were able to fully grasp the concept of wind energy and
its benefits. The use of a KWL chart allowed me to analyze the
students background knowledge of energy. A K-W-L chart determines
what students know and would like to know about a subject. It also
presents the possibility that my plan may need to contain extensions in
which students are able to conduct research on the things they would
like to know about wind energy.

When you have the opportunity to re-teach this lesson, what will
you do differently (strategies, teaching tools, assessments, etc.)
to improve student learning for all students?

In all, my lesson includes some of the key components of STEM. The

science includes identifying wind energy as a resource. The technology
is both hands on and interactive. The engineering is conducted through
the design of a wind turbine which will produce the most energy. One
of the challenges that I faced in developing the lesson was letting go of
lecture. Often in the second grade science classroom I find myself
doing most of the talking.
