BritishCouncil.com: (http://www.britishcouncil.org/)
The British Council is the UKs international organization for cultural relations and educational
opportunities. In its page, the user will find tools for learning and teaching English.
Students of all ages can learn English by taking face-to-face lessons in their teaching centers or at
home via online courses and learning tools. For example, they have special interactive applications for
kids to learn the language so as to make the process more appealing for them. As regards the younger
learners, for instance, they can demonstrate their progress by sitting for the internationally recognised
proficiency tests such as, the IELTS (International English Language Test System), which is aimed at
higher education and global migration, and the the Aptis, which is useful to raise international English
standards in an organization. Furthermore, the page offers other UK exams available through British
Council overseas.
They also offer exams on behalf of UK awarding organizations, professional bodies and universities
in 90 countries across the globe. What is more, if you are not sure, this page provides the reasons why
it is worthwhile to take an exam with the British Council. As regards teaching material, there is a
section which is Teach English in which teachers can find resources for teaching students of all ages
(from kids to adults). They can also find lesson plans, magazines, important events such as webinars
and many other important information. This is a really useful page in which students as well as
teachers may surely feel comfortable with studying the English Language, in the case of the students,
or finding what they need for their classes, in the case of the teachers.
E.L.Easton (http://eleaston.com/) is a web page in which we can find material for teaching and
learning English. The design of the website is not modern at all what makes it difficult to follow and
in some sections it includes too many written texts.
This web page also offers a variety of activities to develop all skills, as well as teaching methods.
From the main page teachers can explore the site and look for material needed as well as students.
However, in the Teaching section there are many links to other websites some of which are not
currently available. Moreover, the section that claims Whats new has not been updated since 2007.
Basically, the structure and tools that this website provides seem useful but not updated.
when new film guides and other media notes become available. Finally, all of the synopses also have
links to other sites on the web, where the movie or entire screenplay can be purchased, or where more
information about the movie topic can be acquired. There is also a section with interesting links about
ESL and the world of films.
Better at English
Betteratenglish.com is a website meant to improve non-native speakers English, step by step. In this
site, learners will find short lessons, listening activities, language learning tips, and other useful
information that may help the non-native speaker to master the language. It also contains a podcasts
episode archive in which the user can find and download lots of different podcasts to practice the
language in an engaging way. Each podcasts has its own transcript for the ones who may need it. After
each transcript the user can find vocabulary notes related to the audio that they have previously heard.
This is really useful to help the learners broaden their vocabulary. It also has a section called practise
speaking English in which there are some pages that are recommended to improve speaking skills.
Moreover, it provides a video for each recommended site explaining how to use it. Furthermore, there
is a list with the pages the person in charge of the page did not like. This is extremely useful so as the
user will not lose time. Last but not least, there is a section which includes some articles in which it is
explained how the writer of the article overcame her fear to speak Dutch while using a page she
recommends. Then, there is another one about The Benjamin Franklin effect . In that section she
also recommends a page in which the non-native speaker can practice English with other native
speakers online. Finally, she explains how to look for the meaning of some idioms that are not in the
dictionary in Google. All in all, this is quite an unusual and interesting page that deserves to practice
mainly Speaking and Listening. Maybe it could be improved by adding some ways and activities to
practice other skills too.
