IMDb
The Internet Movie Database (abbreviated IMDb) is an online database of information related to
films, television programs and video games, including cast, production crew, fictional characters,
biographies, plot summaries, trivia and reviews. IMDb is now the worlds most popular and
authoritative source for the movie, TV, and celebrity content. It offers a searchable database of more
than 185 million data items including more than 3.5 million movies, TV, and entertainment programs
and 7 million cast and crew members. Actors and crew can post their own rsum and upload photos
of themselves for a yearly fee. U.S. users can view over 6,000 movies and television shows from
CBS, Sony, and various independent filmmakers.
Launched in 1990 by professional computer programmer Col Needham, the company was
incorporated in the UK as Internet Movie Database Ltd in 1996 with revenue generated through
advertising, licensing and partnerships. In 1998 it became a subsidiary of Amazon.com, who was then
able to use it as an advertising resource for selling DVDs and videotapes.
As of May 2016 IMDb had approximately 3.7 million titles (including episodes) and 7 million
personalities in its database,[2] as well as 67 million registered users. It is ranked 54 in Alexa Top

Global site ranking.

The site enables registered users to submit new material and request edits to existing entries. Although
all data is checked before going live, the system has been open to abuse and occasional errors are
acknowledged. Users are also invited to rate any film on a scale of 1 to 10, and the totals are
converted into a weighted mean-rating that is displayed beside each title, with online filters employed
to deter ballot-stuffing. The site also features message boards which stimulate regular debates among
authenticated users.
Differences and similarities:
The similarities between the sites are that each deal with topics that can be used as a catalyst for
students to discuss and use their English. The topics come from movies, through movie guides, from
everyday topics and dialogues, and from tips or facts about movies or movie stars.
The differences come from the activities each website present. The first website, eslnotes.com, offers
movie guides for certain movies with activities for ESL learners; the second one, betteratenglish.com,
has dialogues, written and audio versions, that can be used for everyday English; and the third one,
imdb.com, has movie tips and facts about certain movies and movie stars that can be useful for
teachers. The first two sites are specifically designed for ESL students, so many activities in these
sites might be adapted, redesigned for your students. Unlike the first two sites, IMDb is not an ESL
site, but students can use this website to find facts/information (authentic material) about the movies
we are going to work with in the class. Teachers might also use IMDb to work with the trailers and
find facts and information about the movies that they will include in their guides or activities.
