EXPERIMENT NO. 5
NAME OF EXPERIMENT: - Reynoldss Experiment

AIM OF EXPERIMENT: - To study the transition from laminar to turbulent flow in pipe.

APPARATUS: - A uniform horizontal pipe, piezometer tubes, measuring cylinder, stop watch,
scale, vernier callipers.

THEORY: - the flow in a pipe is governed by the dimensionless no. known as Reynolds no.
vd
(Re). it is given by Re=
.

Where
is mass density.
v is average velocity.
d is the internal diameter of pipe.
is the dynamic viscosity.

PROCEDURE:1. Fill the tank with water and allow it to stand for several hours.
2. Open the central valve completely and allow the maximum discharge to flow through it.
Let the flow stabilize i.e. there is no fluctuation in the velocity of flow.
3. Remove the free ends of piezometric tubes from the pressure tapping and let there be no
water in the piezometric tube. Again connect the ends of tubes simultaneously to both the
pressure taps so that there is no air bubble in the tubes connecting piezometers.
4. Note the piezometric readings h1 and h2.
5. Allow a certain volume of water to be collected in the measuring cylinder and
simultaneously start the stop watch.
Hence compute the discharge
6. Gradually reduce the discharge and repeat steps (4) and (5) for further readings thus
covering the entire discharge range uniformly.
