EXPERIMENT NO. 12

NAME OF EXPERIMENT: - Discharge coefficient for orificemeter.

AIM OF THE EXPERIMENT: - Determination of co-efficient of discharge for a given
orificemeter and to draw its calibration curve.
APPARATUS REQUIRED:(i) Flow system through orificemeter.
(ii) U-tube manometer.
(iii) Measuring tank fitted with a piezometer.
(iv) A stop watch.
THEORY: - the co-efficient of discharge through an orificemeter (Cd) is given as:
Qac

Cd=

Qth

Where,
Qac = actual discharge measured.
Qth = a.2gh
h = Equivalent static head of water obtained from the difference in the readings of two
limbs of manometer.
a = Cross-sectional area of orifice.
PROCEDURE:(i) Note the internal diameter of the pipeline and the orificemeter.
(ii) Open the inlet and outlet valves so that water flows through the pipeline and
orificemeter.
(iii) Open the pressure taps. Note down the mercury levels in the two limbs after it gets
stabilised.
(iv) Collect water in the measuring tank for maximum possible time.
(v) Vary the flow rate by regulating the inlet valve.
