I. Instruction to children (v. 1-3)
A. Obey your parents.
1. in the Lord -- as a part of what it means to be a
Christian.
2. This is right -- because
a. it is what God says; you owe a debt of
gratitude;
b. it leads to an orderly society.
B. Honour your father and your mother.
1. Why you should do it? God gives a promise.
a. ease of life
b. long life
2. How it is to be done? Speak well of them and speak
respectfully to them (Phil 2:14).
II. Instruction to parents (v. 4)
A. What not to do: provoke your children to wrath. Three
rules for good discipline in the home:
1. clearly defined rules.
2. consequences that are understood.
3. consistency on your part to carry out the discipline.
B. What to do: bring them up....
1. The training of the Lord: instruction in
righteousness.
2. The admonition of the Lord: correction for wrong
actions.
C. Discipline your children for the Lord with an eye to them
becoming disciples of the Lord.
1. You are training them in actions, words and attitudes
that are consistent with Christian profession.
2. In our lives there should be structured times of
teaching; but we must also take advantage of teachable
moments (Deuteronomy 6:6-7).
Parents, your child has to make his/her decision for Christ on their
own.
Parents, your duty is clear from scripture: Train up a child in the
way he should go... (Proverbs 22:6).
