Lesson Plan Design
Subject: ELA

Grade:

1.
Introduction:
CA CC Standard: Vocabulary Acquisition and Use
L6.4c- Interpret figures of speech (personification) in
context.
6RI4.1 Determine the figurative meanings of words and
phrases.

2. Learner Outcome(s)/Objective(s):
100% of my students will be able to identify and explain
personification in context.
My objective is to teach personification utilizing text.

3.

Pre-Assessment Activity:
When students come into class I will have a
question on the board:

In your notes: write down 2 lines from

the poem below that are examples of
personification. How do you know they
are examples of personification?

poem:
Let the rain kiss you
I love the rain
Let the rain sing you a lullaby
I want to play in the rain
Let it rain, let it rain.

Lesson Topic: Figures of Speech: Personification

Rationale: We have previously introduced figurative

language. This incorporated literal and non-literal
meaning of text. Now I am moving on to
personification in figures of speech. This is consistent
with the California Common Core English Language
Arts Content Standards.

Rationale: The content of this lesson is to have

students identify objects, ideas, places, or animals in a
given text. They are to explain personification and how
the subject has been given a human quality. I broke
the content down so my students focus solely on
personification. Figures of speech have many different
concepts and skills; by breaking the skill down to just
personification students have a better chance of
understanding the concept.

Rationale:
This will be a quick observation to assess the students
background in personification.

4. Differentiation, Adaptation & Accommodation Strategies:

random selection
Rationale:

grouping activities
I will use a variety of strategies to teach the same

visual, auditory, and kinesthetic multiple

material to target ALL students.
intelligences

choral response

white boards

think-pair-share

technology

visuals

5. Resources:

Rationale:

White boards, erasers, dry erase markers

Computer and projector screen
Paper and pencil
highlighter
Youtube video

Individual response: CFU

Show examples, questions, and material
CFU
Note taking is an effective strategy if they are used to connect
the content being learned. Highlighters are an essential tool to
make visual connections to the material. The more visual you
can make things, the more likely students will remember the
material.
Students collaborate
The video is used to relate the information to the
students and give visual and auditory examples

6. Learning Activities: Concept and Relevance

Rationale:
relevance
Define personification
Address the steps to successfully identify
personification
Check for Understanding:

gestures
white board observation
individual response

why students need to know this

visual & auditory explanation (use of technology)

To see how they feel individually on the topic

To get a quick reference of who understands
versus who does not.

7. Guided Practice: Model: I do, we do, you do

several examples for a visual

step by step instructions in identifying
personification

Check for Understanding:

Rationale:

Students can explicitly see by teacher

modeling the steps to identifying
personification

Guides them through the process of identifying

personification in text

This will provide feedback and if I need to reteach the content of the lesson

random selection
white boards
choral response

8. Independent Practice: You do

Rationale:

Identify personification using the steps provided

Socrative mini quiz

Independent worksheet that allows students to:

gives them a visual

The directions ask the students to identify (underline)

Students must read and follow the directions

use the correct steps to identify personification
asks them to identify the subject and the human

the non human idea, object, or animal. Students must

like quality

idea, object, or animal is given.

Check for Understanding:

also identify (circle) the human characteristic/trait this

This will show me if they have mastered the concept

Socrative mini quiz

If they complete the worksheet with 80% accuracy

of identifying personification in text

then I know they have mastered the concept

If they do not do well then I know I need to reteach

students understand the concept well enough to work on

the content

Provides practice that supports the learning outcome

Independent activities are assigned assuming

their own
guides instruction for future learning

Socrative is engaging for students and an instant

insight into different levels of learning. I will use this
assessment tool to evaluate and collaborate as a class
9. Assessment and Evaluation:
Students are expected to use the correct steps to complete
the independent worksheet.

Rationale:
This will be a quick assessment to see which students

allow extra time for differentiation

verbally speak to those students who may not be

are struggling.

great writers
pair/share to scaffold lower level students thinking

more time for practice with the content, or move on for

Socrative is an assessment tool which engages students.

Based on the data, I will know if I need to reteach, allow

future instruction!

10. Closure:
Students will re-state the lesson objective show their ability

Rationale:

to accomplish the worksheet.

Restating the lesson objective will keep students on topic

and they will know my expected learning outcome.
*Extension: I will extend this lesson and have students
create their own sentences using personification. Later in
the unit study I will have students write their own story
using personification to create an exciting picture in the
readers mind.
