Justification:
Audra and I originally decided to weed the library that we share at Citizens Elementary
School. We both teach at that school 1.5 days a week and needed the extra time to work

together to weed the collection since it hasnt been done in at least 4-6 years. At the end of
the school year, we put the whole library in boxes because we were moving the library
down the hall to a room that would be more central to the school. We have not had a
chance to move into our new room yet so we couldnt complete our collection analysis at
that school. Our second choice was to complete our analysis at Gov. Aram J. Pothier
Elementary school because we are both working at this school during the summer. This
was easy access and this school also needed a desperate weeding because it hadnt been
done in years.
During the 2015-2016 school year at Gov. Aram J. Pothier, supported approximately 455
students grades Pre K- grade 2. We had four preschool teachers that taught two classes
each (total of eight classes). These students did not attend library classes, but the teachers
were always welcome to visit the library whenever they wanted. We had six Kindergarten
classes, seven first grade classes, five second grade classes, and two self-contained
classes. We chose to analyze the books between 790 and 797 because as we were
looking for books for our summer program on the different games and sports for the
Summer Olympic games, we noticed that this section had many older books that were
outdated. It also had books that were above the student's reading level. We definitely
needed look at this section to weed the outdated books. We also needed to make sure that
the students have books that at are their level so that they can increase their reading
levels.
We used the MUSTY and CREW weeding policies to decide which books needed weeding.
Many of the books were weeded because they were misleading, containing dated

materials, ugly because they were worn out, outdated, contained black and white photos
and dirty, superseded because there were newer versions available, trivial because the
books were more appropriate for older students at the intermediate level (grades 3-5). We
discussed the use of the method called CREW, Continuous Review, Evaluation and
Weeding, as we made the decision to keep some titles and evaluate them in the near
future, while weeding others immediately.
We looked at a random sampling of 50 books ranging from 790-797. We decided to weed
7 books due to fact that they were too old and were not at the right level for the students at
this school. We also wanted to replace 16 books because they were outdated, but we
wanted to replace them because we felt that the topics were still relevant to the students
today. We needed newer copies that were at the right reading levels for the students at this
school. We also would like to reevaluate 4 books in six months. We decided to keep 23
books because they were in good condition and needed for the collection at this elementary
school.
Twenty-nine items were added to our collection including apps, e-books and hard copy
books at the appropriate levels for the students at this school. We consulted the Follett
Destiny Library manager, which included some reviews books with awards, looked at
Amazon, The Horn Book Guide, and iTunes App Store. In all, we would like to purchase 17
hard cover books, 1 interactive book, 1 paperback book, 1 pre-order book, 2 e-books, 2
books with library bindings and 5 apps.
