by Jacqueline Woodson. Brown Girl
Dreaming is a collection of stories
and poems about growing up African
American in 1960s America.

Woodson dreamed about being equal
and treated like a human being.

Ohio. She was the descendant of
former slaves. Her father hated the
south, but her mother had ties there.

to visit her mothers parents:

Georgiana. She loved her time in S.C.

1970s saw many changes. After her
brother goes to prison and becomes
a Muslim, Jackie begins to admire
Angela Davis and her style. Although
Jackie didnt quite understand the
Black Panther movement, she
emulated the style.

become in the South, Jackies mother
moves the family to NY where Jackie
gets a new baby brother and a new
best friend. Maria is Puerto Rican
and knows the struggles of being a
minority. She and Jackie have much
