DETAILS
Mt. Namsan is a symbolic mountain located at the center of
Seoul. Although not as high as other surrounding mountains,
Mt. Namsan is a very popular nonetheless as a resting site.

At the top, there are various facilities such as Palgakjeong

(octagonal hall), Seoul Tower, Maritime Aquarium, fountains,
and Namsan Library. You may take a cable car to the top or
walk up the stairway path. Other than this path, there are
many other walkways to Namdaemun, Hoehyun-dong,
Taegyero 3(sam)-ga, Jangchung Park, Itaewon, Huam-dong
and much more. The driving courses here are also popular
for couples.
Namsan Park is a historical site. You will find Bonghwadae
(beacon mound) at the top as it was once the center of
capital defense. During the Joseon Dynasty (1392-1910) the
capital was changed to Hanyang,(current Seoul) and to
protect the city from invasions, castle walls were built on the
4 major mountains like Mt. Bukaksan, Mt. Inwangsan, Mt.
Naksan and Mt. Namsan. On Namsan peak, five beacons
were built to report the news from local governments to the
central government with a five-signal system.
Also on the top of Mt. Namsan, there is the Palgakjeong
Pavilion, which has a fantastic view. At Seoul Tower (479.7m),
you can view the whole landscape of Seoul and the West Sea
beyond Incheon. The rotating restaurant in the Seoul Tower
also boasts excellent views. With excellent night view, you
should try having dinner at the tower. It would be a great
experience to visit Namsangol Traditional Korean Village
which is a village of 5 traditional Korean houses.

DETAILS

(1)10:00-10:45: GYEONGBOKGUNG PALACE. Start early with

Gyeongbokgung Palace, the biggest and most important
palace. It was first built in 1394 but was destroyed by
palace servants in 1592 to eradicate records of their
service. Rebuilt by King Gojong in 1872, he fled to Russia
in 1885 when the Japanese sent assassins to murder his
wife in the palace.
- NOTE: Free English Tours: 11am, 1.30pm, 3.30pm
(There is audio guide so these tours arent as important
as Jongmyo Shrines tour or Changdeokgungs.)
(2)10:45-11:30: EARLY LUNCH. Cross the major road to
Insadong to have an early lunch
(3)12:00-1:00: JONGMYO SHRINE. Walk east to get to the
UNESCO world heritage site Jongmyo Shrine at 12pm to
catch the English guided tour.
- NOTE: Jongmyo Shrine does not allow tourists to roam
the grounds except on Saturday. You must catch an
one-hour guided tour for the rest of the week (closed
Tue). Built in 1394, an annual ceremony to honor dead
monarchs, considered most complete ceremony in the
world, is held here on the first Sun of May. This was one
of the highlights to me because there was a sense of
serenity in the shrine.
- English Tours: 10am, 12pm, 2pm, 4pm
(4)1:00-2:00: FREE HOUR. Then walk north for 15-20 minutes
to another UNESCO site Changdeokgung Palace, where
the last prince died in 1970. The English Tour is at 2.30pm.
(5)2:00-3:30: CHANGDEOKGUNG PALACE (PALACE TOUR).
There are two tours here, one for the palace buildings and
one for the palace garden. The 2.30pm tour, focussing on
palace buildings, lasts for an hour
- NOTE:
English Palace Tours: 10.30am, 2.30pm
English Garden Tours: 11.30am, 1.30pm, 3.30pm
(6)3:30-5:00: CHANGDEOKGUNG PALACE (GARDEN TOUR).
Then you should immediately hop on to the next tour at
3.30pm for Biwon or Secret Garden.
(7)5:00-onwards: HAN RIVER: Featuring limited time
showings during certain months, the Banpo Rainbow
Fountain is the countrys premier light show extravaganza

along the river. For a 15 minute spectacular during the

hours of 12, 8pm, and 9pm on weekdays. Weekend hours
for July and August are 12, 5, 7:30, 8, 8:30, 9, and 9:30.
Day and night shows incorporate a different style, so if
youre going to spend a whole day by the river dont miss
out. Head over to Dongjak Station (Line 4) and get out of
exit 1 or 2 and head down to the River for an aesthetic
feast for the eyes.

1. Gogung Insadong Store BIMBIBAP The shop is in a gray

bimbibap was quite refreshing, even though I ate it in the

reduced the spice for meand the bean paste brought out
the subtleties of flavors. 3/5.
