Reporting conversations

Look at the direct speech and the two different ways of reporting it.
Which do you think is better?
Why?
a) Im terribly sorry. I really wont do it again.
1. She said that she was terribly sorry and that she really wouldnt do it again.
2. She apologized and promised not to do it again.
b) I couldnt come yesterday. I had to stay at home.
1. He said that he hadnt been able to come the previous day because hed had to
stay at home.
2. He explained why he hadnt come the day before.
Report the following direct speech, using one of the verbs below. Notice how they are used:

To complain, announce, insist, agree, explain + that + clause


To explain + what/why/how + clause
To refuse, offer + to + infinitive
To suggest + that + person + should + infinitive (I suggested that he should go to bed.)

Make the sentences quite short. Remember to report the essence of the direct speech, not
every word!
1. Ill give you a lift to the airport, if you like. Its no trouble at all, he said to me.
2. Listen, everybody, Anna and I have something to tell you. Were getting engaged,
said Jeremy.
3. Now then, Peter. If I were you, Id start revising for that exam right now, said the
teacher.
4. I think youre right, Ann. Your solution is the best, said Daniel.
5. Its not fair! said Betty. I always have to do twice as much work as Bob. He hardly
does anything!
6. Theres no way you can have the car tonight, son. I need it myself, said Henry.
7. Thank you for the invitation, said Judith, but we cant come, Im afraid. Julians
got the flu, you see. I hope the party goes well.
8. I must make the point quite strongly, she said, that I did my very best to help.
