A RESOURCE GUIDE FOR OLDER ADULTS

Corp:

July 15 - 21, 2016

Serving St. Louis County Seniors Since 1975

St. Louis County Older Resident Programs

offers myriad of opportunities for seniors such
as help from volunteer drivers to legal assistance
by Mary Shapiro

Two area road warriors are doing

their part to help older adults stay in
their homes.
Marguerite Warren of Kirkwood
and Roslyn Wahlbrink of Concord
Village are volunteer drivers with
the St. Louis County Older Resident
Programs (CORP) Neighbor Driving
Neighbor program. They drive older
adults to appointments such as to
doctor and therapy visits and grocery
shopping.
Wahlbrink, 74 this month, has
been a CORP volunteer for about
four years. She drives individuals
to various appointments four to five
days a week for a few hours a day. In
addition, during tax time she schedules
appointments for the tax preparation
program.
After I was laid off from an
administrative assistant job when
the company closed in 2012, I saw an
article in the Webster-Kirkwood Times
that CORP was looking for volunteers
at tax time, she recalled. After I got
started with that, I fell right into the
driving business.
The people I meet keep me doing it,
Wahlbrink said. I love them theyre
all so thankful. Were a godsend to so
many people.
These people include a 91-year-old
veteran who Wahlbrink recent took to
get a haircut, an X-ray and then to the
grocery store.
Like Wahlbrink, Warren became a
CORP volunteer after seeing a Times
ad. A heart condition forced her to
leave the workforce.
Since 2011, Warren has been
volunteering three days a week, up to
six hours a day as a driver.
This year, I also started doing
CORP tax scheduling, taking phone
calls to schedule people at different
locations for help with federal and

state taxes or to get the circuit breaker

property tax, she said.
For Warren, the volunteering was
an opportunity to give back.
My late parents and I were always
volunteer-type people, Warren said.
Ive met a lot of people through
CORP, and I enjoy that. Many older
people want to stay in their own home
but dont drive and their children work
so its hard for them to take time off to
drive parents around.
This is a way for me to get out of
the house and have a little interaction
while doing something useful, Warren
said. It makes you feel good, doing
something nice to help somebody, and
they really appreciate it.
Warren and Wahlbrink are two of
about 300 volunteers helping out with
CORP programs, according to CORP
Manager Susan Schafers.
CORP Programs
Through all our programs, we likely
serve annually about 8,000 people who
live in St. Louis County aged 60 or
older, Shafers said. We got started
in 1975, originally with a federal grant
to the county to hire older workers to
start the program from scratch.
Programs have changed over
the years, with more added, but the
concept has remained the same
helping people remain independent as
long as possible in their own homes,
Schafers said.
CORP offers programs for free and
is funded through St. Louis Countys
general revenue fund.
Theres certainly a need for these
programs, because the population is
aging so quickly, Schafers said. Were
fortunate that the county has taken
on the challenge to become part of the
Age Friendly Communities program,
an effort between the World Health
Organization and AARP to make the

county more age friendly in a variety

of ways.
There are more CORP participants
now than when Schafers started with
the program 22 years ago.
Our customers have gotten older
the average age of a transportation
customer is 78 because people are
living and staying healthier longer,
she said.
CORP targets the needs of older
adults through a variety of programs
and services which include:
Neighbor Driving Neighbor:
Volunteer drivers use their own
vehicles to transport older adults to
and from medical appointments and
other destinations free of charge.
Volunteers pick up the person, take
them to the appointment, wait for
them and return them home.
Care Calls & Home Visits:
Volunteers make visits or telephone

MATURITY & ITS MUSE

Lynn Friedman Hamilton enlists arts & education institutions in providing programs for seniors
by Linda Jarrett
Some people are born with an altruistic spirit
running through their veins. Lynn Friedman
Hamilton is one such person.
She has combined her background in art and elderly
support services with the St. Louis Housing Authority
and formed Maturity and Its Muse, an organization
which promotes positive, productive aging.
After owning an art gallery and chocolate shop in
Brentwood in the late 1980s, Hamilton got the urge to
get more involved in volunteer work.
During the time I had the gallery, I met lots of St.
Louis artists, she said. They were getting older and
I admired them so much because they have a great
attitude and would never consider retiring.
I wanted to celebrate them and present a show of
their work, not only as a thank you for them, but as
a way to inspire other people, she said. Maybe those
older seniors who had always drawn would think,
Maybe Ill start again.
Hamilton enlisted the Sheldon Art Gallery to host
a show which she curated and called Maturity and
Its Muse.
I made a list of artists and decided that age 70
would be the cut-off age, she said. I talked to them
and asked if they would like to show their work, but
they would have to create something new for this
show.

Hamilton wanted to capture what these mature

artists held in their creative minds as they got older.
I was looking for people who had changed their
careers because of new methods out there they hadnt
known about, or who had disabilities but wanted to
continue making art so they looked for another art
form to express themselves. I wanted to use them as
role models to encourage others, she said.
Hamilton continued to find more artists and
curated shows at the Regional Arts Commission and
Craft Alliance. Then she changed her focus to other
programs.
I knew of a program in New York City called Meet
Me at the Museum of Modern Art. The program was
for people with early to mid-Alzheimers disease, she
said. They would come with their care partners to
learn about art.
With this in mind, she contacted the Kemper
Museum at Washington University asking if the
museum would partner with Maturity and Its Muse
on similar programs. KARE, Kemper Art Reaches
Everyone, an arts engagement program designed for

people with early-onset to moderate
Alzheimers, was born.
Maturity and Its Muse collaborates
with organizations including the
Missouri Botanical Garden, Missouri
History Museum, the St. Louis County
Library, Saint Louis Art Museum,
Washington
University
Dance
Department and the Alzheimers
Association.
I come up with an idea of something
I think people might enjoy and I call
on the organization like the Garden
and pitch it to them, Hamilton said.
Its worked so well that I have other
organizations who have approached me
about developing something for them.
The
Silver
Screen
Program,
sponsored with the city of Creve Coeur,
features a free movie on Mondays in
September at the Creve Coeur AMC
Theater.
The films are about aging in a
positive way, she said. We have
someone from the community come and
talk about the film, and participants
run the gamut from Alzheimers to
physical disabilities to people like you
and me looking for an afternoon out
with their friends and nice conversation

afterwards.
The
program
Silver
Stages,
performed eight months a year
through the Missouri History Museum,
brings in seniors who sing and dance.
Retirement communities like Laclede
Groves in Webster Groves have
also taken advantage of Hamiltons
programs.
Kristina Wille, director of resident
services at Laclede Groves, said many
residents have taken advantage of
programs on flower arranging at the
Botanical Garden and the Kemper Art
Reaches Everyone.
We take mostly skilled nursing
patients and they really enjoy it. One
gentleman used to be a florist. One
month we convinced him to go to the
flower-arranging program, and he was
in his glory, Wille said. Whatever
he had, dementia or Alzheimers, you
could tell that when you go back into
something youre familiar with, things
just start to click.
Hamilton said she has never done
anything that has made her feel
happier.

OASIS

New OASIS location at Eden draws a variety of speakers

by Don Corrigan

Since 1982, Older Adult Social

Services (OASIS) has been a leader in
adult continuing education. Its latest
addition is at Eden Theological
Seminary in combination with
Webster University, an added resource
offering scholars for program instruction.
Two programs on the agenda for
August involve international topics
that will explore their relevance to
Americans and our global future.
A look at the Syrian Civil War will
be presented by Don Conway-Long,
professor of anthropology at Webster
University. His class is slated for
Tuesday, Aug 2, from 1 to 3 p.m. on
the Eden campus.
The One Child Policy in China
and its effects will be explored by
Deborah Trott Pierce, director of the
Confucius Institute in St. Louis at
Webster University. Pierces class is
slated for Monday, Aug. 8, from 1 to 3
p.m. on the Eden campus.
The one child policy of the communist government in China was intended to get the poorest of the poor out of
poverty, explained Pierce. It did
address that problem to an extent, but
it has created other problems.
With no Social Security in China,
the safety net for seniors has been to
be cared for by their large families,
said Pierce. However, that safety net
is now gone and the retirees do not
have the kids to take care of them.

professor of anthropology at Webster University; David Greenhaw, president of
Eden Theological Seminary; and Allison Woodorth, education program manager
for OASIS.

Pierces talk is, in part, about the
law of unintended consequences, especially when politicians do not examine
all the results of even well-intentioned
policies for their citizens.
In the case of the one child policy,
extra children were put into adoption
without needed adoption regulations;
female children were aborted because
families wanted their one child to be
male; there are not enough females to
go around now for marriages.

Retirement is generally mandated

in China at 55, said Pierce. There
are seniors in China who are losing a
sense of purpose and who cannot be
cared for. The governments policies
now pose many new problems for
China.
Don Conway-Long said he looks
forward to a discussion on the Syrian
Civil War with his audience. He said
those in the over-50 age bracket are

naturally better informed than many
of the age 20-somethings that he
teaches in college classes.
Syria is one of the most dangerous
hot spots in the world, said ConwayLong. We are confronting Russia all
over the place and it shows the Cold
War really isnt over yet. We do need
to talk and be informed about this.
I get some great questions in these
forums and with the two political conventions completed when I speak,
well, that just adds another dimension, said Conway-Long. Syrias civil
war is there to remind us of the disastrous Bush Iraq policy that destabilized the entire Middle East. It reminds
us of the terrible messes that our politicians can get us into.

Programs Success
Other 2016 programs at the new
OASIS location in Webster Groves
have included Faith and Ferguson
by Eden assistant professor and author
Leah Gunning Francis; Religion and
the First Amendment by Leigh
Greenhaw of Washington University
School of Law; as well as, Tennessee
Williams: Americas Shakespeare by
Carrie Houk Wilson, who teaches at
Webster University.
Were thrilled with the Webster
Groves site and are finalizing our fall
offering for the community, said
Allison Woodworth, education program manager for OASIS. The buildings at Eden are beautiful. The academic resources are endless we can
just about do any topic.
We also bring experts from our
other locations, added Woodworth.

We bring in creative writing instructors and presenters from the Folk

School at KDHX Radio.
Topics for the fall for OASIS at
Eden include: What Were The Women
Saying: The Pastoral Epistles, Jazz
and Religion, Contrasting MLK with
Malcolm X, Living Generously and
more. For dates, times and
specific location go to:
www.oasisnet.org/STL.
Author and Eden
biblical
scholar
Laurel Koepf Taylor
will provide a fall
program Children in
the Bible. She will
draw on her book,
Give Me Children or I
Shall Die, which see
researched while completing
her theological studies at Union
Theological Seminary in the City of
New York.
I will focus on biblical stories
regarding children, which tell us a lot
about how children were valued in the
past, said Taylor. We look at children as priceless today, whereas in
the past they had a very practical
value in the family relationship.

New Partnership
Eden
Theological
Seminary,
Webster University and The OASIS
Institute developed the new partnership with a goal of creating high-level
learning opportunities for adults age
50+ in the Webster community. Other
OASIS
sites
include

Kirkwood, Chesterfield and OFallon,

The offerings at Eden provide rich

opportunity to bring university and
community members together for lifelong learning experiences, noted
Webster
University
President
Elizabeth Stroble. We certainly value
serving the Webster Groves community as a learning organization.
David Greenhaw, president
of
Eden
Theological
Seminary,
explained
how the seminary is
exploring all avenues
of community outreach and will have
more programs in the
future.
Eden Theological
Seminary is thrilled to
be embarking on a partnership with OASIS and
Webster University to offer
high-level, engaging educational
opportunities for adults, said
Greenhaw. The partnership gives us
another creative vehicle for fulfilling
our mission to enliven critical reflections on faith as well.
OASIS has had numerous requests
over the years for classes in Webster
Groves, according to Woodworth. She
said OASIS already is at work with
scheduling a 2017 program.
We are just delighted to partner
with Webster University and Eden
Seminary, said OASIS Founder
Marylen Mann. It is exciting for our
members to have access to outstanding leaders in education. We are
already seeing strong interest and
enrollment in the programs.

Resident Gardeners Bring Summer

Splendor To Bethesda Orchard
by Marty Harris

Bethesda Orchard in Webster

Groves has had a flower garden for
many years, but its taken a decidedly more beautiful turn since 2013. At
that time a landscape architect came
up with a master plan for the grounds
and a group of residents have taken on
the task of carrying out the plan.
The Bethesda Garden Club, chaired
by Mary Bard, has about 10 to 12 volunteers who tend the approximate
one-acre garden, according to Jim Groetsch, one of the volunteers and president of the Bethesda Residents Association.
Each one of those volunteers had a
garden at their own home before they
moved here, Groetsch said. They
have a love of gardening which they
are expressing in the Bethesda garden.
While all the volunteers do their
share, Groetsch said Emil Beier is the
key guy. Beier volunteers at the Missouri Botanical Garden and did a lot of
planting at Francis Park.

Colonial Chapel
6464 Chippewa St. 314.832.7770

Emil Beier and Barbara Hause check

out the daylilies at Bethesda Orchard.
Hes very, very knowledgeable,
said Groetsch, noting that a plaque in
the garden bears Beiers name in appreciation for his efforts.
The garden is funded from a small
shop at Bethesda stocked with an
assortment of items donated by residents, including pictures, jewelry and
note cards.
It nets about $300 a month, Groetsch said.
The shop is now planning a summer
Christmas sale from residents donations.
