The cam can then be removed through the bottom of the cap, 5, Remove the stem jam nut and stem test washer. 6. Reassembie in the reverse order making sure the cam rests beneath the stem test washer. Section 5: LAPPING PROCEDURE 1. The finish on the seat and disc are critical to seat tightness. After the parts have been thoroughly leaned, both parts should be lapped to remove all blemishes and score marks. This can be done on an automatic lapping machine or by hand, using a cast iron lapping block or Pyrex lapping glass which is known to have a perfectly flat surface (see FIG. 6.1) 2 When lapping by hand use a small amount of the appropriate lapping compound as shown in Table Il When lapping the disc use a light figure eight motion making sure to cover the entire surface (see FIG 5.1). With this motion the complete surface of the part will be evenly lapped and you will avoid wearing ‘a groove inthe blook. Lever Jam Nut Plain Washer Cam Shaft Gland Packing Ring Retaining Ring ‘Stem Jam Nut ‘Stem Test Washer Cap Packed Figure 4.3 2TAU-OKD & 2741-PKD Only OC Figure 5.1 3, Follow the same procedure for lapping the nozzles. When lapping types that incorporate the seat in the body (2740UL, 2740U) the lapping glass or block should be placed on the seat and moved in a figure eight motion. For lapping these types on a lapping machine Farris tool number 23858A should be used to insure the seat is Kept fat on the table. 4, Alter lapping, be careful to remove all excess lapping compound. When assembling the valve take care not to scratch the seat or disc. Parts that are badly scored or pitted should be replaced. Alternately, & ‘machine cut may be made on some seats and discs. ‘See critical cimension table on page 8. Mount the valve on the test stand. Use air as the test medium for air, gas and vapor or flashing service applications. Set valves for saturated steam service (on saturated steam. Valves for steam service set with ir should include temperature compensation. The nameplate provides "Cold Diferential Set Pressure.” Set valves for quid service on water 2. 5. Hold the STEM tightly and tighten (tun clockwise) the ‘SPRING ADJUSTING SCREW to increase the spring force, Make sure the stem does not rotate while load- ing the SPRING. . Slowly raise the test drum pressure and observe the opening point. The set pressure on air or steam is the "pop point", while on water itis the first continuous flow. |. If necessary reduce the test drum pressure and adjust the SPRING ADJUSTING SCREW. Repeat this unti the valve opens at the required pressure, designated as “Cold Differential Set Pressure.” At the desired set- ting, torque the JAM NUT to 25 FT.Lbs, and assem- ble CAP and GASKET for tightness testing. Check set point once more after locking JAM NUT. NEVER ADJUST THE SPRING SETTING WHEN THE PRESSURE UNDER THE VALVE IS NEAR ITS POP- PING POINT, AS THE BODY SEAT AND DISG SEAT MIGHT SCORE AND/OR GALL. ALWAYS LOWER ‘THE PRESSURE IN THE VALVE AT LEAST 25 PER- CENT BELOW POPPING PRESSURE BEFORE MAK- ING ADJUSTMENTS. THIS WILL PUT A LOADING (ON THE SEATING SURFACES, THUS PREVENTING ROTATION AND DAMAGE. Perform a seat leakage test to API Standard 527. Using air bring the pressure up to 90% of set pres- sure and hold it. Blank off the outlet with a bling fiting which includes a 5/16" diameter tube connection. Insert the tube in a small container of water and count the bubble leak rate which should not exceed the lim its set forth in API Standard 527. Replace the cap gasket and cap. Wire seal the cap to the bonnet.
