General Instructions. Write (as legibly as possible) all pertinent solutions and answers on A4 sheets of paper. Start each problem in a new sheet of paper. Box or encircle your final answers. Answer sheets should be stapled and folded lengthwise before submission, write your surname at the back of the last sheet. Submit on or before May 19, 2016, 12nn. Name:_______________________________________________________ Problem 1. It is required to convey a discharge of 10 m3/s over a bottom slope of 1V:2000H. Determine and compare the excavation per meter length and lining per meter length of a most efficient rectangular, trapezoidal, v-notched, and semicircular channel. Which is the most efficient channel? Would you recommend using that channel? Why or why not? Assume n=0.015 for all canals. (25 pts) Problem 2. For a partially full channel with an equilateral triangular cross section and a base of 2 meters, determine the discharge if the channel is laid at a bottom slope of 0.001 and the normal depth of flow is 1 meter. Assume n=0.015. (25 pts) Problem 3. A trapezoidal irrigation channel excavated through sandy formation having a critical tractive force on the horizontal of 2.5 N/m2 and angle of friction 35o is to be designed to convey a discharge of 40 m3/s on a bed slope of 1:10 000. The side slope angle will be 250 and the Mannings coefficient will be 0.022. Maximum permissible velocity is 0.6m/s. Design the channel using MPV and critical tractive force method. Add a freeboard to accommodate 20% additional discharge. Sketch your design. (25 pts)
Problem 4. A vertical sluice gate in a rectangular channel of bed slope
0.005, width 4.0 meters and Mannings coefficient of 0.015, has a vertical opening of 1.0 m and coefficient of contraction of 0.60. Taking =1.1, determine the location of the hydraulic jump when the discharge is 20 cumecs and the downstream depth is regulated to 2.0 meters. Use depth increment of 0.04 meters and show solution for direct step method for the first two rows only. (25 pts) Fill out the table and submit this as your output along with the solution. Put your names in this sheet. y (m)
