TOWARDS CIRCULAR PRODUCT DESIGN

Practicum 2: Teardown & Repair

GENTLE DISMANTLE
1. First, take a picture of the WakaWaka before teardown. Include some kind of scale, with a
ruler or graph paper for instance (a photo booth is available for more clear pictures).
2. Proceed by disassembling the product in steps. Be careful, this is a non-destructive
teardown1, you need to put the product back together again (and it should still be working!).
3. While dismantling the WakaWaka use the underneath template table for all parts of the
product, the Bill of Materials & Processes. The excel-template can be found on Blackboard
Circular Product Design worksheets.xlsx document, worksheet Teardown.

4. After complete disassembly, take a picture of the product in exploded view. Number the
parts in the picture according to the numbers in your table and finish the BoMP.
5. Put the product back together. Ensure it still works.

DIAGNOSTICS ASSESSMENT
6. Develop the FMEA table (like the one below) for 10 conceivable failure modes of the
product. Use the second worksheet of the Circular Product Design worksheets.xlsx excel
sheet, and the FMEA tutorial website for more information about FMEA:
http://www.six-sigma-material.com/FMEA.html

Tear the product down until the level where you have to cut or de-solder parts.

REPARABILITY GUIDE
7. Choose a component with a high RPN.
8. Develop an iFixit repair guide for the replacement of this critical component, using the
template made available. You can make use of the photo booth available in the studio.

REPARABILITY SCORE
9. Fill in the Reparability Scoring rubric for the WakaWaka in the third worksheet of the
Circular Product Design worksheets.xlsx document, named Reparability.
10. Calculate the Reparability Score for this product.

WIKI POST
After putting the WakaWaka back together and making sure it still works, you can start writing
your Wiki post for this week. The deadline is Friday 19 February 17:45. The assessment
criteria will be uploaded on Blackboard before Friday. The post should contain the following:

5 bullet points with your main takeaways from the lecture and practicum.
150-200 words describing three improvement options for the Waka Waka. If you were
to redesign the Waka Waka to make it easier to repair, what design options would you
consider?
Finished excel sheet with the BoMP, FMEA, and Reparability Scoring Rubric.
