Comprehensive Instructional Design Plan

University of West Georgia

Client Information:
My client, Constance Hinely, works at May Howard Elementary in Savannah GA. She is the
technology lab instructor at her school and sees all kids K-5th grade once a week for fifty minutes
at a time. She graduated from Georgia Southern University with her degree in Human Resource
Management but after a few years decided to return to school to pursue an M.Ed. in Early
Childhood Education. Mrs. Hinely can be reached at her email chinely@my.westga.edu.
Instructional Problem:
Mrs. Hinley is the technology lab instructor at her elementary school. The main problem she
having in her class is that younger students have very little knowledge of computers coming into
her class. She is one the front runner at her school in bringing new technology into her class
room. She realizes that even though technology has become a staple within our society when
kids enter her classroom they have no knowledge of the ins and outs of a computer. She wants to
find a way to present basic computer knowledge and also internet safety while online. The
educational benefits of this topic is great for a lesson. The standards that will addressed within
the redesigning of her lesson are:
The National Educational Technology Standards for Students:
1. Basic Operations and Concepts Students:
a. demonstrates a sound understanding of the nature and operation of technology
systems.
b. is proficient in the use of technology.

Redesigned Lesson Description:

I have created two artifacts of learning that will help her students grown in their
knowledge of computer and internet safety. The first on is just a simple infographic that she can
use to go over in class with her students and show them what makes up a computer. She will be
able to use this artifact to help the students with the second artifact. The second artifact is an
assignment the students will be doing that can help them to understand computers and the
internet better. For the assignment the students will be going online and find a comic creator so
they can create a comic strip explaining what they have learned about computers and internet
safety. With this assignment the students will be able to show everything that they learned from
studying the first artifact. This assignment requires that the students show what they have learned
and they will be able to use what they have learned by applying it within the assignment.
Evaluation:
A rubric will be created and shown to the students so they can see what it needed to do
well on the assignment. This is the way all of the students will be evaluated. The main objects of
the assignment will be to demonstrate an understanding of the basics of a computer, demonstrate
an understanding of internet safety while online, and create a comic that portrays an
understanding of both computer function and internet safety. The students will also need to be
able to implement a story aspect into their comic strip.

This project is designed for a signal student to complete independently. Student must use
the internet and find a comic strip creation website. Use the website to create a comic
strip showing that you understand how the use the internet correctly and safely.

ACRL Visual and Literacy Competency Standards:

The two artifacts of my lesson redesign fall under the third and fifth standards of the
ACRL competency. The third standard states that the information literate student evaluates
information and its sources critically and incorporates selected information into his or her
knowledge base and value system. The information literate student summarizes the main ideas to
be extracted from the information gathered. The information literate student articulates and
applies initial criteria for evaluating both the information and its sources. The fifth standard
states the information literate student understands many of the economic, legal, and social issues
surrounding the use of information and accesses and uses information ethically and legally.
Student understands many of the ethical, legal and socio-economic issues surrounding
information and information technology. student acknowledges the use of information sources in
communicating the product or performance. Using these standards, I will be able to structure my
lesson around them.
Reflection:
Creating some of these artifacts for this assignment was both fun and time consuming. Including
technology into lessons helps our students to prepare for their inevitable futures. The semester
has given me some additional knowledge to use and grow as I continue to create visual and
media tools. This assignment itself was very challenging and it took all of my knowledge from
this semester to complete it. Though things did work out and I was able to give Mrs. Hinely a
redesigned lesson that she can use in her classes.
