1.INTRODUCTION
Sincemostmajorapplicationsrequirealargenumberofplants,thequalityoftheplantingmaterialisimportantfor
thesuccessfulapplicationoftheVetiverSystem(VS).Thisrequiresnurseriescapableofproducinglargequantitiesof
highquality,lowcostplantmaterials.Theexclusiveuseofonlysterilevetivercultivars(C.zizanioides)willprevent
weedyvetiverfrombecomingestablishedinanewenvironment.DNAtestsprovethatthesterilevetivercultivar
usedaroundtheworldisgeneticallysimilartoSunshineandMontocultivars,bothofwhichoriginateinsouthern
India.Givenitssterility,thisvetivermustbepropagatedvegetatively.

Advantages:
Plantsarehardyandunaffectedbyexposuretohightemperatureandlowmoisture.
Lowerirrigationfrequencyafterplanting.
Fasterestablishmentandgrowthafterplanting.
Canremainonsiteforlongerbeforebeingplanted.
Recommendedforharshandhostileconditions.
Disadvantages:
Moreexpensivetoproduce.
Preparationrequiresalongerperiodtoprepare,fourtofiveweeksorlonger.
Transportinglargevolumeandincreasedweightisexpensive.
Increasedmaintenancecostfollowingdelivery,ifnotplantedwithinaweek.
