The originators of this model are Elliot Soloway, Mark


Guzdian, and Kenneth E. Hay. This ID model supports
learners through the use of software that is very specific to
the learners. In this model the use of scaffolds is key.
Scaffolds are unique to each learner and offer
encouragement, tips, explanations to help the learner in
their task. The better the learning, the fewer the scaffolds.

The summary of this ID model notes that there are 4 key


elements in learner-centered design, they are: 1. Context, 2.
Interface, 3. Tasks, 4.Tools.
One example of learner-centered design are CLIPP modules
through Med-U, they are patient case presentations that the
learner works through, responding to prompts and
questions. There is a built in engagement meter that lets
the learner know how well they are doing with particular
prompts. Additionally each case has its own built in
resources pertinent to the information presented. While not
specific to each individual learner, the more global audience
of Pediatric clerkship students are the learners here.

The originator of this model is Gunther Kress and is based


on the idea that people use many different modes to
communicate with each other. This does include written or
spoken language, but also nonverbal modes such as art,
dance, gestures, etc. He suggests that in order to really
understand others, we should communicate using many
modes.
This reminds me of learners in general, having done the
VARK questionnaire a few times, understanding that we all

learn in different ways, some more verbal, visual,


kinesthetic, and aural. Speaking for myself, the more
modes I engage with learning, the better.
