Assigned Readings:

For this unit the horizon report that I focused on was the ”2016 K-12 Edition: Key Trends

Accelerating Technology Adoption”. This article began by stating the two long term goals that

would need to happen in order for technology to advance. The first term goal that they agreed

was redesigning learning spaces, in order to create an environment that would provide the kids

with hands-on activities. The second term goal that they focused on was that they said they had

to rethink were working and the pace that they would need to have in order for their end goal to

benefit the students and prepare them for the 21st century workforce.

While having these two long term goals was their main priority. It is important to

understand that they planned on making this possible by first of all starting with the teachers and

allowing the teacher education programs to be the ones that needed to train and emphasize the

development of technology within classrooms and allow the instruction to be more of where they

“as in the teachers” were seen more of guides and coaches. I especially liked this point because it

connects to the first horizon report I read in rethinking the role of teachers and how important it

was for the activities to be led by students. Within this same note it talked about how there was

$100 million dollars in the budget to make sure that the teachers across the country benefit from

professional developments such as coding and makerspace. In addition to the teachers getting the

professional development they needed they also mentioned how some of that money was going

to be used so that the less advantage would benefit from programs such as makerspace. By doing

this it was hoped that more schools would embrace the notion of students as creators and the

ones that were at the forefront of their education.

Of course for this to take initiative it was vital to keep the students on board and they did

this by allowing them to have real-world experiences to better prepare students for the workforce

and at times even had them do projects within their community to expose them to the real world

in which they had to problem solve on their own. This really resonated with me because I was

able to see that the plans that they had back in 2016 were actually on track and what they had in

mind was achievable.

Reflective Experience:

I would say that this article was by far one of my favorite units. Not only was I able to

picture the different projects and advancements they were suggesting, but I knew that it was

implemented. It allowed me to look at my professional career and how I have contributed to this

advancement, as well as what I needed to do to continue supporting the advancement. For

instance, it was talking about coding and how coding was a new form of digital literacy and was

on the rise in schools because of the important role it played in computer science and it made me

think about my own experience with coding and my students. I had an afterschool club called

Ladies with STEAM and we explored the coding bots and the maker spaces too. We were able to

attend a conference at the apple store where the girls got a chance to interact with the apple

technology and foster their own game. In addition to this, it talked about a fifth-grade class in

South Korea that had a project of turning a playground into a parking lot and were able to see the

finished project. Although, not the same project this made me think of my hometown Grand

Island, Nebraska in which Habitat for Humanity partners up with the Seniors from one of the two

local high schools and those who have an interest with construction and infrastructure are invited

and admitted to the program. The students take part from the beginning of the house building to

the end where their owners get to see it for the first time. It was these things that allowed me to

really reflect on the actual advances we’ve had in the education field with technology.

your own success towards meeting this standard within your Final Project as a
Personal Rating using the following delineation:

2 Unsatisfactory-needs significant improvement
3 Somewhat satisfactory-needs targeted improvements
4 Satisfactory-discretionary improvement needed
4 Very satisfactory-no improvement needed

technology-rich professional to grow in and take some time to
learning programs that model develop rich professional learning

the words “Ready 321 Math Time” and
they would have their math notebooks

we began. Although this was a very
good program to use, there need to be
a deeper understanding/implementation

c. Evaluate results of professional 2 Again, this is something that I hadn’t

effectiveness of that lesson and use the
knowledge obtained to see where I
need to rethink/reteach.

c. Regularly evaluate and reflect on 3 I believe that this is something that every

strengthen their ability to effectively only look at a professional growth goal,
