According to the Center for Disease Control, about 78 Americans die every day from opioid overdoses. It is a national epidemic. The CARA Comprehensive Addiction and Recovery Act of 2016 is a legislation that architectures education and access to treatment for opioid addiction. However just legislation is not enough. For legislation to be effective there must be funding as well. President Obama proposed to allocate 1.1 Billion dollars towards this effort. Out of this, based on Center for Medicare and Medicaid Services assessment, the state of Illinois is eligible for 28 Million. The people of Illinois need to be aware of this epidemic and how it impacts our communities. We need to make sure that these funds are appropriated and distributed appropriately. The department of public health is the most appropriate way to disperse these funds for the purposes of education of professionals, family and friend and also to ensure access to treatment.
