SOUTHWEST, WA | Wild steelhead now have free reign in over 1,000 sq. miles of Washington watersheds. This includes the
Sol Duc, Wind, East Fork Lewis, North Fork Toutle / Green, Grays and Chinook rivers. Never again will any of these Wild
Steelhead Gene Banks be planted with hatchery steelhead. Catch and release steelhead fishing continues on these streams, but
season and gear regulations are built around the need to conserve each gene banks wild steelhead population.
This accomplishment is the result of the steadfast work of member Laura Hudson, River Steward Steve Lent, Regional
Coordinators Jason Small and Peter Donahower, and Southern District Manager Jake Crawford. These boots-on-the-ground
advocates were empowered with the best available science, which enabled them to effectively champion the best interest of
Washingtons remarkable wild steelhead.
In 2016, our goal is to secure the same protections for wild steelhead swimming home to the Puyallup, Elwha and Skagit rivers,
because Puget Sounds wild steelhead deserve every stream mile free of hatchery fish they can get.

and recovery of wild steelhead across the Pacific Northwest.

LIFETIME ACHIEVEMENT AWARD | PETER TRONQUET

RIVER STEWARD OF THE YEAR | DOUG DEROY

In 2015, Native Fish Society

acknowledged Peter Tronquet, longtime
River Steward and founding board
member with our Lifetime Achievement
Award -- Native Fish Societys highest
honor. Peters leadership and dedication
to the mission has played a key role
in recruiting and inspiring the next
generation of Native Fish Societys staff
and River Stewards.
ANNUAL REPORT 2015 | NATIVEFISHSOCIETY.ORG

In 2013, Doug became Native Fish

Societys first River Steward in California.
Two years later, he earned the programs
highest honor, receiving our 2015 River
Steward of the Year Award, for his
work protecting wild steelhead in his
homewaters. To learn more about Dougs
work on the Sonoma and Mendocino
Coast check out the short film, Low Flows

PROTECTING CRITICAL FISH HABITAT

TILLER, OR | This year Native Fish Society and a coalition of our
conservation partners secured a ban on suction dredge mining in
all protected wild salmon, steelhead and bull trout habitats through
2021. In total, 24,000 Oregon stream miles are now off limits
to suction dredge mining. Like so many of Native Fish Societys
campaigns, our effort to protect Oregons critical fish habitats from
suction dredge mining began with one of our grassroots River
Stewards -- Stan Petrowski of the South Umpqua River.
During our 2012 Fall River Steward Gathering, Stan relayed what
hed witnessed on the South Umpqua River. Hundreds of suction
dredge gold miners converged on southern Oregons salmon streams
vacuuming up river gravels, removing riparian vegetation, stirring up
toxins like mercury, and creating plumes of sediment. For Stan, the
mining rush put protected Coho salmon, years of work and millions
of dollars invested in salmon habitat restoration in jeopardy.

Waterways Protected By Temporary Ban on Suction Dredge Mining

Four years later, thanks to Stans leadership, Native Fish Societys

commitment to our stewards, and our legislative advocate Jim
Myron, NFS joined partners like Oregon Wild, Waterwatch and
Rogue Riverkeeper to champion legislation that created a cooperative
process for addressing suction dredge mining as well as critical
interim protections for essential salmon and bull trout habitats.
In 2016, our goal is to empower the public to identify and report
illegal suction dredge mining while we work with our coalition
partners, champions in Salem and miners to craft a workable long
term solution to protect salmon from suction dredge gold mining.

EEL RIVER HEADWATERS INITIATIVE

Upper Mainstem Eel O. Mykiss

PHOTO: Jason Hartwick

UPPER EEL RIVER, CA | What makes the Eel River special?

Not only is it Californias third largest river, the Eel is the largest
coastal watershed without any hatchery programs in the lower
48 states. The Eels sport fisheries feature special safeguards for
wild, native fish including mandatory catch and release as well
as seasonal and flow limits to protect fish when theyre most
vulnerable. Taken together these decisions give the Eels wild,
native fish a tremendous head start toward recovery.
The biggest challenge remaining for wild fish in the Eel is the
scarcity of year-round, cold water habitats -- nearly half of the Eel
River and its tributaries are lethally hot for salmon and steelhead
during the summer. With this in mind, our Eel River Stewards
focused their efforts on identifying and quantifying the extent of
snow fed streams featuring high quality habitats currently blocked
by Scott Dam, in the upper mainstem of the Eel River.
In 2015, River Stewards began a five year temperature
monitoring effort, placing 14 HOBO temperature monitors in
various creeks above Scott Dam from June to October. Despite
being one of the driest years on record, our 2015 data indicates
that substantial cold water habitats currently exist above Scott
Dam -- 8 of the 14 tributaries stayed below 68F all summer long.
