Taxation trends
in the European Union
Focus on the crisis:
The main impacts on EU tax systems
What was the impact of the economic and financial
crisis on EU tax systems? This booklet, based
on the 2011 report Taxation trends in the European
Union, provides an overview of the way in which
the recession that started in 2008 affected the tax
systems of the 27 EU Member States. It examines
the impact on tax ratios and analyses the reaction
of tax policy by country and by type of tax,
answering questions such as: Did EU Member
States cut or increase taxes in the recession?
Was the impact of the recession stronger
in countries with higher tax ratios? Did the tax
policy choices take into account the existing level
of taxation?
The booklet is written in a concise, readable format
and includes a statistical annex containing the main
data on taxation by country and for the EU
as a whole.
