Dear Parents,
Welcome to another school year and especially to Year 5! I hope everyone has had a
relaxing and enjoyable vacation and are looking forward to a busy year ahead.
For those parents I have not yet met, Id like to spend a few moments to introduce
myself. My name is Julian Knight and I am from Brisbane, Australia. This is my 13 th
year teaching and although I have been fortunate to have taught across most year
levels, I have spent the majority of my time teaching this particular age group and its
an age group I enjoy teaching the most.
This is my fourth year at AIS and prior to that I taught the PYP at Zhuhai International
School in China. In Australia I have worked for Queensland Education and Brisbane
Catholic Education at a variety of primary schools in Brisbane. I am excited to begin
my fourth year at AIS and am thrilled to again be working with such an excellent team
of teachers.
I am married to Emilie Knight who is a Year 2 teacher here at the Cherry Blossom
Campus. Together we have three children, Oscar (Year 7), Sam (Year 4) and Lily (Year
1).
Ms Phuong Nguyen will be the support teacher with our class 5JKN. This is Phuongs 7 th
year at AIS and besides being hard working and dedicated to her job, she has a great
rapport with the students. Phuong and I work really well together and Im excited to be
working with her again.
This year is an important one in your childs learning journey as they become more
responsible learners. The word responsibility will feature prominently this year and
encompass many areas of your childs education such as their actions, belongings,
homework and of course their overall learning. As you know, the next two years will fly
by and your children will soon be entering middle school. I have a strong belief that if
these students can begin their middle school journey as responsible learners, they will
have a greater chance of success.
I have always been a big supporter of home-school communication and this letter
forms the beginning of this process. The best way to communicate with me is via
email at my school email address. Feel free to email me at any time with any
questions or concerns that you may have. Within a few weeks, youll also start
receiving regular updates about what is happening in the classroom through our class
Weebly.

Homework will begin in Week 3. Your child will have homework set on Mondays to be
completed and returned to school on Friday mornings. In Year 5 it is expected that
students spend 20 minutes on reading each night as well as work on other curriculum
areas. This could include spelling, writing, math activities and learning to support our
Unit of Inquiry. Homework will support the learning in class and should be able to be
completed by your child independently, so please let me know if your child is
struggling with the homework tasks set.
We will be having a Parent Information Night on Tuesday, August 23 and will be
discussing classroom specific things such as curriculum, homework, communication
and camps etc. More details about this evening will be sent home soon.
If you have any questions or concerns before then, please feel free to send me an
email.
Having been at AIS for a couple of years now I have got to know some of the new Year
5 students well and am excited to be working with them in 2016/17. Im really looking
forward to a rewarding year ahead!
