Grade 6

Standards:
All Earth processes are the result of energy flowing and matter
cycling within and among the planets systems. This energy is
derived from the sun and Earths hot interior. The energy that
flows and matter that cycles produce chemical and physical
changes in Earths materials and living organisms. (MS-ESS2-1)
Objectives:
After learning about the layers of the earth and convection
currents students will be able to describe the processes through
a story or cartoon.
Materials:
Textbooks
Construction paper
Markers and colored pencils
Procedures:
Introduction:
Students seats will be moved at the beginning of class for the
new trimester. As a Do Now students will share the four facts they
found with their tables and agree on one fact for each layer to share
with the class. We will share four facts from each table and talk about
why that fact may be important.
Body:
Students will use the textbooks to find information on convection
currents. Students will read two pages on convection currents. As a
class we will take important notes onto page four.
Closing:
Students will begin working on their comic strips. They will create
a rough draft on page three in their ISN before starting on the final
copy. For the story they must include: convection currents, the mantle,
heat transfer, density, and gravity. This assignment will be worth 10
points.
Assessment:
Students will be asked to create a comic strip/cartoon that
depicts convection currents.
Differentiation:
Students can create a story or a comic strip for their classwork
assignment.
Notes:

Four facts from each table took too much time. Instead ask entire
class to give 2-3 facts for each layer, write important ones on
board. If composition and temperature arent said by students
add them.
Not enough time to work on comic strip. Homework is to
brainstorm ideas on page 3. We will work on comics tomorrow.
