Class: 3rd grade science

Unit: Represent the natural world using models such as volcanoes or Sun, Earth,
and Moon system and identify their limitations, including size, properties, and
materials

Teacher: Samantha Cantu

Objectives: The student knows that information, critical thinking, scientific


problem solving, and the contributions of scientists are used in making decisions.
Students will be able to identify the planets and Earth in the solar system.
Standards: 112.14. Science, Grade 3 Science
(8) Earth and space. The student knows there are recognizable patterns in the natural
world and among objects in the sky. The student is expected to:

(D) Identify the planets in Earth's solar system and their position in relation to the Sun.

Students will be assigned a planet or star (sun) and are to gather information and
be able to tell their classmates about their planet.
Materials: Books on all planets (Planets by William B. Rice), use of ipads
(www.planetsforkids.org/) (www.kidsastronomy.com/solar_system.htm)
(The Planets of the Solar System-App) Styrofoam balls, paint, sticks, glitter, markers,
and puffy paint.
Duration About 1 1/2 hours give or take will be given for this activity. (Time may be
adjusted as the activity is going)
Anticipatory Set: We will begin with a moving model of the solar system on the
projector, the lights will be off and I would have put glowing stars on the ceiling.

Teaching Input

A series of slides will be provided to the students beforehand to get the general
knowledge of the solar system and how it works. After the students are done with their
activity, the slide show will be reviewed again to assure nothing was missed.

Modeling
Before class begins the teacher will have an example model made so students have
an idea of what is expected of them. In this lesson the teacher has made a model of
planet Earth so at the end of the activity the students can visually see how small
Earth really is. As you are presenting Earth, students should be taking notes.

At the end of the lesson all the visuals will be gathered and the teacher will put them
into a bigger model to keep in the classroom.

Checking for Understanding

Going through all of the instructions and determining if everyone is on the same
page and knows what is expected of them during this activity. Do not move on until
all questions are answered and every student understands. The teacher should
make sure that you want them to get into this activity and have fun while doing it.

Questioning Strategies
As the students are working, the teacher will walk around and ask what
information they have gathered so far and ask general questions about the size
and temperature of the planet.

Guided Practice:
With the information the groups have gathered they are to write down facts about
their planet, including physical features, temperature and size. (8-10 facts)
 Each group will create their planet on their Styrofoam ball that has
been provided.
 To know what color their planet should be, they have to know information
about it first, so research should be done first followed by the creating of
the
model planets. Facts should be written down in short sentences on a separate
sheet of paper. Each group will present to the entire class and once each
group presents everyone should have plenty of information of each planet.
Closure:
After the presentations the teacher will gather all of the projects and the
information will be reviewed as a class just in case some of the information was
missed for note purposes. Reassure all students absorbed the information because it
was a lot, but making it a fun activity was helpful. Once the presentations are done,
go over the entire content one more time just in case something was missed.

• To go over again all the information because it may be a lot
• To help all students who learn in different ways

Independent Practice:
Once the lesson has come to an end the students are to write 2-3 facts about every
planet that was presented including Earth that the teacher presented in the
beginning of class. This will be told to students in the beginning as a requirement so
that student understands that they need to pay attention to every presentation. This
will help keep students quiet while groups are presenting.
