Position paper: The Role and Significance of a School

Student Affairs and Development Services

In school thorough a good education, students learn how to plan to achieve their goals.
They also learn how to think critically and creatively, and improve the other skills they need. By
exploring different subjects and fields they recognize their interests and abilities which lead them
to achieve success. In schools’ students are encouraged to overcome their weaknesses through
their strengths.
Student learning doesn’t only happen in a classroom. Opportunities for teaching and
development exist everywhere on campus, and it is the responsibility of student affairs
professionals to seize these moments and promote positive interactions. Encouraging an
understanding of and respect for diversity, believing in the worth of individuals, and supporting
students in their development are just some of the core concepts of the student affairs profession.
Student support and services contribute to the quality of their learning experience and their
academic success. Studies show that the most important factors in education quality assurance
are: quality of teaching / learning and service systems and support for students (Hill et al, 2003).
Therefore, the importance of support activities for the students is obvious but also presents the
management of services with difficulties due to the increasing number of students and their
needs.
Student affairs appears to be the profession for me because I want to work in an
environment that challenges both the people I work with, and myself. During my undergraduate
career I had the pleasure of working with a variety of advisors and mentors who saw something
in me that I, at the time, had not discovered within myself. I was often challenged to push myself
a little farther and a little harder in order to accomplish goals that I had struggled to set for
myself.
According to Garfolo and Huillier (2015), “Education values are the cornerstone of the
student learning process and as such these values need to be clearly articulated to ensure that
an inclusive and transparent process of learning assessment can take place” As a more diverse
student body attends college, the concepts of student development and student learning continue
to be their primary goals. I firmly believe it is never too late to gain an education. As a future
educator I dedicated to inclusiveness offering my personal experiences and my attained
knowledge to my future students in order to encourage students with their goals in life. My
support of students in earning an education will lead to more creative which will influence the
rising generation. Those working in this field need to believe in what they do in order to have the
passion to keep fighting for it. I confidently believe I have that passion. The focus on college
campuses today is overall student success. I believe that student affairs play an integral part in
academic success, co-curricular success, and career success.
An important role of student services is to prepare students for active participation in
society. Along with teachers and non-governmental organizations they contribute to increased
learning opportunities and community involvement by organizing or promoting internships,
experiential units or short-term experiences, integrated into the curricula. (UNESCO, 2002).
These services take a major role in encouraging and establishing open methods of making
decisions and rationally resolving conflicts. The manner in which the policies are created, with
which the decisions are made and controversial topics are addressed, is as important as the
results. The institution gives students a series of values by the way of addressing policies,
decisions and problems. (Worse, 1987).
