Long time ago, the Greeks and many other ancient people thought that numbers had magic powers. Even
today, there are people who think that some numbers are lucky or unlucky. They believe that 7 is a lucky
number and that 13 is an unlucky one.

In fact, there are tall buildings in some parts of the world in which no floor is numbered as 13. The floor above
12th floor is called 14th . we still use expressions and phrases that have come down to us from the people who
once believed in the magical quantities of numbers.

Numbers have intrigued people down through ages. The ancient Greeks were particularly fascinated by
characteristics of numbers. For example, the Greek thought of even numbers such as 2,4,6, and so on as those
that can be divided by as breakable and therefore weak and feminine. In contrast, they thought of odd
numbers such as 1,3,5 and so on as unbreakable and therefore strong and masculine, in short even numbers
for girls and odd numbers for boys.

The Greeks invested specific numbers with mystical properties and here are some numbers that was given
symbols by Greeks:
The number 1 symbolized unity and the origin of all things, since all other numbers can be created from 1 by
adding enough copies of it. For example, 7 = 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1 + 1. The number 2 as the first even numbers
was symbolic of the female principle, while number 3 as the first odd numbers symbolizes the male. Square
numbers such as number 4 represented justice, the two factors being equal 2 times 2. In number 5 The
combination of 2 and three or female + male results together as marriage. Number 7 symbolizes luck. The
most perfect number was 10, because 10 = 1 + 2 + 3 + 4. This number symbolized unity arising from
multiplicity. And number 13 symbolizes unlucky such as friday the 13 th .

Early philosophers found harmony in numbers. The symbolism and beauty behind each number can be further
extended to the essence of all following numbers.
