Johns HopkinsThe Path to Success
Johns Hopkins started accepting students in 1876 when the first president, Daniel Coit
Gilman, founded the private school in Baltimore, Maryland. As Mr. Gilman stated in his
inauguration, The encouragement of research . . . and the advancement of individual scholars,
who by their excellence will advance the sciences they pursue, and the society where they
dwell. (jhu.edu) The college focuses on advancing science by implementing a style of teaching
and researching as one, making Johns Hopkins the first research university. Johns Hopkins
expanded since the opening by building colleges for students to study abroad in over 51
countries worldwide. Attending Johns Hopkins sets one up for success in post-secondary life
when becoming a trauma surgeon because of its outstanding undergraduate school, majors in
biology and pre medicine with advanced facilities, and small campus to ensure a beneficial sense
of community.
The exceptional undergraduate school at Johns Hopkins allows for students to study in
one of the most prestigious schools in the country. Johns Hopkins, rated third in the country,
accepts 13% of applicants making the environment competitive to keep students active in their
studies. Its extraordinary, well known reputation makes certain that students find employment as
soon as they graduate. Some of the notable alumni that achieved great success include John
Dewey, American philosopher, social critic, and educator; Rachel Carson, biologist, ecologist,
and author of Silent Spring; and Woodrow Wilson, 28th U.S. president (jhu.edu). The school
only hires scholarly professors that possess the highest of standards for all students to push them

to work their hardest. Many teachers at Johns Hopkins have accomplished extraordinary feats
and won many awards from their research at the school. For example, Astronomy Professor
Adam Riess won the 2011 Nobel Prize in Physics. Riess, along with two other scientists, was
awarded the prize for the 1998 discovery that the universe was expanding at an accelerating rate.

Nobel faculty members (univeristyparent.com). By attending this undergraduate school,
students exceed their own expectations, which grants them the ability to believe in their own
work and ideas.
Johns Hopkins also offers majors in biology and pre medicine with advanced facilities to
help young people becoming a trauma surgeon to succeed and prepare for life after college. To
become a trauma surgeon, one must major in either biology or pre medicine to set oneself up for
readiness of rigorous graduate courses. Since Johns Hopkins holds an undergraduate and
graduate program for medical students, ones chances to get into a medical graduate program
increase due to the teachers awareness of the requirements. Professors also help those attending
the undergraduate school study and conduct research using the modern facilities on campus.
NMR spectrometers suitable for studies of biological macromolecules are located in the
Biomolecular NMR Center, located in an underground facility in front of the new chemistry
building. This center is a joint initiative of the Departments of Biology, Biophysics, Chemistry,
and Materials Science in the Krieger School of Arts and Sciences, with additional collaboration
from the Departments of Biochemistry and Pharmacology in the School of
Medicine. (chemistry.jhu.edu) All departments join forces to accomplish common goals to

encourage peer bonding and teamwork. Johns Hopkins owns many other facilities that expand
the curriculum to actually show the students the possibilities in the world.
Johns Hopkins acceptance rate causes the enrollment to be relatively small, but this fact
allows for a lot of opportunities. The strong sense of family at the university, due to the smaller
campus life, enables students to feel at home during school. The school supports over 400
undergraduate student-run clubs, 24 varsity sports, and club sports that help new students
connect to other classmates as well. Another way to get exercise and meet new people is by
walking to the close proximity classrooms. Most Johns Hopkins undergraduates study at
Homewood, the 140-acre North Baltimore campus that has been home to our School of
Engineering since 1914 and our School of Arts & Sciences since 1916 (jhu.edu). This excerpt
touches on the Homewood campus of 140-acres that lets students walk everywhere or take buses
if necessary. Walking or busing with the same people to classes motivates one get to know
others outside of school, and help one feel safe seeing the same people around. The low
acceptance rate lets students know only top applicants are accepted to add a feeling of security.
A small campus also indicates a low student to teacher ratio, Johns Hopkins being 10:1, which
shows ones education is top priority and more one-on-one opportunities are available to make
certain one understands the material. Small schools help students feel confident, stand out, and
get a better education compared to a larger college.
Johns Hopkins is a great school for those looking to become trauma surgeons to attend.
