Process:

Sequence of interdependent and linked procedures which, at every stage, consume

one or more resources (employee time, energy, machines, money) to convert inputs
(data, material, parts, etc.) into outputs. These outputs then serve as inputs for the
next stage until a known goal or end result is reached.
Management as a Process:
As a process, management refers to a series of inter-related functions. It is the
process by which management creates, operates and directs purposive organization
through systematic, coordinated and co-operated human efforts, according to
George R. Terry, Management is a distinct process consisting of planning,
organizing, actuating and controlling, performed to determine and accomplish
stated objective by the use of human beings and other resources. As a process,
management consists of three aspects:
1.

2.

3.

Management is a social process - Since human factor is most important

among the other factors, therefore management is concerned with
developing relationship among people. It is the duty of management to make
interaction between people - productive and useful for obtaining
organizational goals.
Management is an integrating process - Management undertakes the job of
bringing together human physical and financial resources so as to achieve
organizational purpose. Therefore, it is an important function to bring
harmony between various factors.
Management is a continuous process - It is a never ending process. It is
concerned with constantly identifying the problem and solving them by taking
adequate steps. It is an on-going process.

Firstly, one needs to understand what a "process" is/involves:

1. A series of actions, changes, or functions bringing about a result
2. A series of operations performed in the making or treatment of a product.
Process is a Series, a Sequence of actions/events/decisions/functions; it is a
Continuum of steps towards a common objective/goal. It is Not One single action or
a discrete, stand-alone entity, but a Related Chain of linked behaviours/actions.

Now Management falls into that Continuous Stream of decision-making, problemsolving, fire-fighting, trouble-shooting, tasking, interpersonal relations, personnel,
administration, etc. Each subsequent action/decision is rooted in the previous one.
The goal(s) of specific management dictate the sequence of steps taken. Also, each
step can have a feedback that would impact the future action. Thus the Process is
not necessarily Linear, but can be a closed or open loop too.
