Flow Over Weirs Accessory
Objective (s):
1. To determine the deviation between actual and theoretical volumetric flow of two different weirs (v-profile
and rectangular).
2. To illustrate the volumetric flow chart for two different weirs.
3. To compare the actual and theoretical volumetric flow.
Intended Learning Outcomes (ILOs):
At the end of this experiment the student shall be able to:
Properly operate the HM 150.03 (Flow over Weir Accessory) Apparatus.
Illustrate the comparison between the theoretical and calculated volumetric flow.
Discussion

The accessory set HM150.03 Flow Over Weirs is used together with the HM150 Fluid Mechanics
Basic Module [3].
The HM150 contains a channel section [5]. The water enters at the bottom left and then flows to profile are available
for experimentation purposes.
The weir head is determined with the aid of the height sensor [1]. The volumetric flow rate can then be calculated
from the above.
The volumetric flow rate is determined using the volumetric tank [3] and the volume scale [6].
The volumetric flow rate is set on the ball cock [4], which regulates the pump of the HM150.

Procedure(s):
1. Insert the rectangular/V-notch weir into the hydraulic bench and fit the weir tightly by using screws in
order to prevent leakage to occur.
2. Open the water supply and allow water flow over the weir.
3. Adjust the water supply so as to make the water level become steady. Let the water flow over the weir
and wait until steady state of flow is reached.
4. Adjust the height sensor and its pointer just touch the water surface. Set the reading to be zero so that
the bottom of the notch is taken as the datum. Make sure the height sensor does not slide along the
mast during the experiment until all data have been recorded.
5. Switch on the stopwatch and record the time for admitting 10 litres of water flowing over the weir.
6. Record the actual volumetric flow rate, Vm.
7. The theoretical volumetric flow rate Vth is calculated as follows:
For rectangular weir:

For V-notch weir:

8. Repeat the steps using different measure of h.
