Unit/Lesson Title: Splish Splash

Stage: 3
Aim for the lesson:
To develop problem solving skills through numbers patterns and to introduce
basic algebra techniques.
Prior Knowledge:
From Stage 2, students will need to be able to identify and describe patterns
counting forwards or backwards by threes, fours, sixes, sevens, eights and nines
from any starting point, and be able to continue identified patterns.

Year: 6

MA3-2WM - selects and applies appropriate problem-solving strategies
MA3-8NA - analyses and creates number patterns, constructs and completes
number sentences
Resources:
Worksheet, interactivie whiteboard, coloured counters, coloured pencils

Introduction (Engagement)
Whole class gathered on floor. Share the learning aim with the students. Ask students if any strategies they know when solving patterns
then introduce any patterns they didnt come up with, for example: guess check and improve and look for a pattern strategies of
problem solving. Introduce the activity, ask for questions then distribute resources. 10 mins.
Body
(Exploration/Transformation/Presentation)
Students return to their desks, in their table groups they are allowed to discus how to sollve the questions.
Teacher walks around making sure all students are on task, help students if needed.
Extension questions will be given out as needed for early finishers. 30min
Conclusion (Presentation/Reflection)
Gather class on the floor, then by asking for answers and the strategies from one student per question, ask the whole class if anyone did
it differently.10mins.
