Reaching the NEXT Generation Through Collegiate Church Planting

So what can we do? We believe that as Southern Baptists, we are better together than we are
apart, and that together we can make a profound impact on the college campuses of Nebraska. We are purposing to invest time and
resources in collegiate church planting and to
put some of our best leaders in this strategic
mission field in coming years.
We are excited about a new initiative to reach
the students in Nebraska through collegiate
church planting. But we need your help to
make this happen. Our goal for the 2016 Viola
Webb offering is to raise $30,000 for the startup

of a new collegiate church reaching the University of Nebraska students. Please consider
helping take the gospel to the next generation
by giving to the 2016 Viola Webb offering in
your church this fall or contacting KNCSB with
your gift. This year 100% of offerings from Nebraska churches will be used in Nebraska.

Associational & State Missions Offering 2016

The mission field has come to the cities of

America and perhaps no mission field is more
strategic than the college campus. Author Stephen Lutz says, The college campus is the
most strategic mission field in the world. It
is so important to reach the college campus because the students there represent the top 1%
academically of the people in the world. What
they do on that campus will spread out across
the culture. The college campus is truly an epicenter of culture, learning, and innovation and
the concepts and ideas there work like a hub
and spokes working out into the world.
In University of Nebraska system there are
51,800 college students, yet at the present time
there are very few groups effectively reaching
them. Can we do church on a college campus
that engages young people, that equips them
for a lifetime of walking with Jesus and that
transforms the next generation with the gospel? Can we do church a different way?
The age when a person is most developing
is between the ages of 0 to 5 years old. But
between the ages of 18 and 25 there is a second age of impressionability where people are
forming who they are going to be. During this
time a person makes decisions that will affect
the rest of their life including who they will
marry, their vocation, what they believe about
God and the world. Reaching college students
at this point in their lives is crucial.
As a convention we want to respond by investing significantly in this mission field, because what college students do today on the
college campus has huge implications for what
happens in the future in our churches, communities and ultimately for the spread of the
gospel.

Emporia State University--Epic Spring Break Trip Plants Gospel Seeds

Mention the phrase spring break to college students and visions of an epic trip with
friends fill their minds: sleeping a zillion to a
room; meeting students from other universities; laughing until it hurts; fun and games;
hammers and shovels; people in need
WAIT! People in need? Hammers and shovels? Are we still talking about spring break?
Yes. Christian Challenge students from Emporia State University spend their spring breaks
on mission trips helping Southern Baptist Disaster Relief teams.
Its a tradition for Jason Huebners students
to join forces with other university groups to
help rebuild lives. Theyve gone to help after
Superstorm Sandy, Hurricane Katrina, flooding, etc. The director of the ESU Christian

Challenge ministry said they will go wherever

there is a need to share the love of Jesus Christ.
These trips help students see that life is not
about self but about self-sacrifice and laying
down your life for others, Hubner explained.
It shows important elements of being a follower of Jesus serving others and sharing
your faith.
Theres a certain element of fun that goes
into these trips, the veteran student worker
added. Traveling together and working sideby-side builds depth and community. But the
main objective is to show life lived in a different kind of way, one that is self-sacrificing
and Christ-centered.
by Sue Sprenkle

Spring Break 2017 will feature another Disaster Relief

trip for ESU. Pray the students will have a safe trip.
Pray they will share Christ and make an eternal difference. Pray that these epic spring break trips have a lasting impact on ESU Christian Challenge students.

Pittsburg State University--When Starting Over Is a Good Thing

Associational & State Missions Offering 2016

Practically all of the leaders at Pittsburg

State Universitys CrossQuest left. The ministry is starting over this year and its a
good thing.
Upperclassmen and recent graduates are
starting a new church plant in Arma. They
work with an associational missionary and
Josiah Hashman, a former PSU student and
challenge staffer. Around 30 students make
the short drive each Sunday and other
times during the week to help out in any
way possible.
CrossQuest discipled us. We learned to
reach out on campus to our peers. We grew
in our relationship with the Lord. We became more and more burdened for reaching the lost, Josiah says. Its only natural
that CrossQuest students help with a new
church plant. Its in our DNA.
With all of the leadership team helping

out at the church plant, director Mike Trent

will be starting over on campus and discipling the next generation of Christian leaders. He shakes his head in amazement at the
Lord calling his students to plant a church.
I wasnt quite ready for this, the veteran
minister says, wavering between pride in
the church planting efforts and worry for
the 2016-17 school year at PSU. This is a
good problem to have. God always brings
the next group. I cant wait to see what their
future holds.
by Sue Sprenkle

Pray for new students to find community at PSUs

CrossQuest. Pray for God to raise up leaders out of
this new group and grow in their faith. Pray for the
students sharing Gods love through planting a church.
Praise God for students learning to share the gospel
and willing to roll up their sleeves to work where others will not.

Kansas State University--Life Groups Prayed Her to Faith

Its normal to get to college and hit the party scene, or at least thats what Ellen thought
when she arrived at Kansas State University.
She hit every party that first semester and
struggled in everything.
It was rough. My relationships were unsteady and my faith was non-existent, the
recent graduate said. But things changed my
second semester.
A friend invited her to a Christian Challenge life group to listen to some teachings of
Jesus. They discussed the love of the Father
and His protection. Ellen felt like the group
leader was speaking to just her as pieces of a
puzzle fell into place.
Years earlier, Ellen was in a near fatal accident. An emergency responder remarked
that, someone up there was looking out for
her. Later at the hospital, a nurse thanked the

Father for protecting her. Ellen did not grow

up in church and had no idea what they were
talking about, so she tried church while in
high school. But nothing ever clicked until that
night at life group. She still didnt understand
totally but knew this was worth investigating.
I went every week to meet with a group of
girls. We started praying together every week
for an hour, Ellen said. It was through hearing my leader praying that I understood what
it meant to have a relationship with the Lord. I
could hear her passion and love for Him; how
much she adored and admired Him and that
she wanted others to love Him, too.
Now, Ellen longs for others to love Jesus and
have a relationship with her protector.

Pray for students to share Christ with each other.

Robbie Nutter, K-State Christian Challenge director,
said they found that it takes a community of students
(six or more) sharing with someone before a decision
is made to follow Christ. Pray for the many conversations and actions that lead up to these decisions. Pray
for students to get plugged into life groups and build a
solid community

Ft. Hays State University--Christian Challenges Impact AFTER College

My Christian walk became more real to
me as I went through Challenge at FHSU,
Daniel, who now serves as associate pastor at
Crosspoint Church in Hays, said. One thing
I encourage others to grasp is dont live for
less than what God has intended for us to
live. Embrace every opportunity that is given
through Christ.
Haley explained that the time in Christian
Challenge helped them to see that God is not
just something on a to do list, but truly the
center of every list. He is the priority.
by Sue Sprenkle

Pray for Biblical truths and concepts to stick in the

lives of college students today. Thank God for those
that are living out what they learned through Christian Challenge. Ask that Christian Challenge students
strive to go deeper in their relationship with Christ and
the lost community around them.

Its been a few years since Daniel and Haley

Williams were in college but the life lessons
they learned in Fort Hays State Universitys
Christian Challenge still stick with them.
We carried a lot of what we learned and experienced as students with us into our life after
college, Haley said. One of the most important things we learned was how to love people
well and intentionally.
Taking biblical truths and concepts and applying it to life are just a few of the goals for
Christian Challenge. The organization wants
to introduce students to Christ and help them
live Christ-Centered lives not just in college;
but even after they graduate and enter the
adult world. Lessons range from acts of service to digging into the Word.

University of Kansas--Christian Challenge Spreads to the Whole Family

Susan saw the flyer on the University of
Kansas transit system. It advertised a place
to learn about God and make some deep
relationships. On a whim, she decided to go,
never realizing that the life of her entire family was about to change.
It was the first official Christian Challenge
meeting at KU. Like most first meetings, there
were some mishaps but Susan didnt notice.
The message and ideas filled a void inside.
The year before, she attempted suicide. She
was moments from death when someone
found her. She was doing much better after
intensive counseling, but something was still
missing. She signed up for a life group.
Through mentoring and the life group,
Susan learned about God as a father. She
wrestled with finding the Truth and believing
it over lies shed been told her whole life. As

she grew in knowledge, Susan grew in her

faith and asked Jesus into her heart. The void
was gone!
Three years later, Susan leads a life group at
KU and goes on international summer mission trips. Her family watched her journey
closely. So much so, that her two younger
sisters joined Christian Challenge at another
college and asked Jesus to be their Savior.
Susans parents also found new life in Jesus.
When Ryan and Ginger Stelk began this
ministry at KU, they prayed Gods glory
would be proclaimed beyond the boundaries of the campus. Their prayers have been
answered. Students like Susan continue to
take the Gospel home and to other parts of the
world.

A new dorm at Washburn University could

change dynamics at the mostly commuter
campus. This year, they go from less than 700
living on campus to more than 1,000.
Craig Freerksen, WU Christian Challenge
director, is really excited about the changes.
The most strategic place to connect with students is through the dorm, he explains. We
are always looking and praying for opportunities where we can add value to our campus
and lives of students.
In the past, Christian Challenge ministries
met and served students through a campus
food pantry, picking international students up
at the airport and a series of debates featuring
famous speakers discussing different aspects
of faith.
Freerksen says all of these outreaches are
simply a way for students to build relationships and communicate on things that matter.
With the addition of the new dorm, Christian
Challenge students are stepping in again to
serve. Several students involved in the min-

istry are voluntarily moving into the dorm to

have an impact.
Most students in the new dorm will be
freshmen. They will be choosing for the first
time on their own what direction they are going to go. The upper classmen from Christian
Challenge hope to build relationships and
invite them to learn what it means to live for
Christ. They hope to do some Bible studies
in their dorm rooms. They also want to be a
witness for Christ through their everyday life
and interactions.
There are so many reasons for students to
move out of the dorm, Feerksen says. But
these students are moving in for the best reason to share Christ!

Pray for the Father to draw more students to Himself

at KU. Pray for our students to be faithful in sharing the Good News with the students they are around
everyday and with their families. Pray that we are like
Paul, sharing with clarity and boldness.
