Progress Monitoring Tips

*Revised 8/29/16

Purpose: To provide tips and tools for

academic progress monitoring.
Non-purpose: To debate the RtI
process.

WHO?
Progress monitoring is used to determine
student progress or performance in those
areas in which they were identified by a
variety of assessments as being at-risk (e.g.,
reading, mathematics, social behavior).
It is the method by which teachers determine
if students are benefitting appropriately from
the typical (e.g., grade level, locally
determined, etc.) instructional program,
identify students who are not making
adequate progress, and help guide the
construction of effective interventions for
students who are not profiting from typical
instruction (Fuchs & Stecker, 2003).

When?
Tier 2 Targeted- once every two
weeks.
Tier 3 Intensive - once a week.

How Long?

Depending on the students needs,

interventions typically should last
between 6-8 weeks. Then the team
needs to review the students
progress at PLC (Tier 2) or Tier 3
meetings to determine next steps.

How?
Start with getting a Baseline or preassessment.
Then do your regular bi-weekly
progress checks and use that data
to review at your PLC.
After 6- 8 weeks, do a Post
Assessments/ Final Check.
Be sure to include the target area,
dates, size of group and minutes in
the record keeping.
With your PLC, determine if the
intervention should continue or if a
different intervention needs to be
implemented?

Progress Monitoring Tools

Literacy
Options
Once the need has been
identified, check the Literacy
folder for possible tools for
progress monitoring.
More specific tools can be
developed depending on the
intervention that your PLC decides
is most appropriate for your
students individual needs.

Where is data
stored?
Tier 2 intervention progress
monitoring data can be kept with the
teachers in folders, google docs, etc.,
whatever is easiest for the teacher
delivering the intervention.
