Aerospace Coatings
Take Off

his months issue takes an in-depth look at the aerospace coatings market.
Associate Editor, Catherine Diamond interviewed the leading
aerospace coatings manufacturers for our cover story on the Aerospace
Coatings Market. Experts from PPG, AkzoNobel, Mankiewicz, Hentzen
and Sherwin-Williams offer their insight into this high growth market.
Research firm Market and Market reports that the global aerospace
coatings market, along with its end-user industry, has witnessed a strong
growth for the past few years and this growth is estimated to increase in
the coming years.
The properties, such as faster product drying times, light-weight
coating systems durability, unique color styling, variety of colors, increased productivity, environment-friendly solutions, and an upsurge in
the demand in commercial and military aerospace coatings will be the key
influencing factors for the global aerospace coatings, with an increased
emphasis on its user types and their end-user industries, Market and
Market researchers noted.
Additonally, Correspondent Charles Thurston takes a look at the
Latin America aerospace coatings segment. According to Thurston, Latin
Americas relatively steady economic growth suggests that the regional demand for aviation coatings will more than double GDP expansion, predicted by the World Bank to be 1 percent this year and back to a more
normal 2.3 percent next year.
Boeing projects Latin American airlines will need 3,050 new airplanes
valued at $350 billion in the next two decades, tripling the regions current
fleet size. Over the long term, Latin American economies will grow faster
than the rest of the world, said Donna Hrinak, the president of Boeing
Latin America. This growth will create increased passenger traffic in the
region and drive Latin American airlines to expand and compete for business that has traditionally been dominated by foreign operators.

AkzoNobel Publishes Q1 2016 Results

kzoNobel has reported its first

quarter 2016 results with positive volume developments in all
three Business Areas despite a challenging
market environment. Operating income
increased 17 percent to 357 million and
EBIT increased 9 percent to 334 million, reflecting continuous improvement
initiatives and lower costs, partly offset
by adverse currency effects. Revenue was
down 4 percent compared with the same
period last year as positive volume development was more than offset by adverse
currency effects, price/mix and divestments. Profitability improved, with return
on sales at 9.7 percent compared with 8.5
percent last year.
Malys Castella - CFO AkzoNobel
said, During the first quarter we grew
volumes in all Business Areas and continued to improve profitability despite
a challenging market environment and
negative currency effects. Net income
improved by 50 percent and we continue
to further strengthen our businesses by
delivering on our strategy of continuous
improvement, organic growth and innovation. During the period we agreed
an offer for the acquisition of BASFs

well with our existing business, adding to
our offering of essential solutions for our
customers.
Decorative Paints: Operating income
increased 4 percent, mainly due to higher volumes and lower costs, partly offset
by unfavorable currency developments.
Volumes increased 6 percent due to positive developments in Asia and Europe,
offset by Latin America. Revenue was
down 3 percent, mainly due to unfavorable currency effects and adverse price/
mix. Performance Coatings: Operating
income increased 9 percent, due to higher volumes, management delayering,
continuous improvement initiatives and
lower costs. Volumes were up 2 percent
mainly driven by Marine and Protective
Coatings. Revenue was down 3 percent,

with positive volume development being

more than offset by adverse currencies
and unfavorable price/mix. The intended acquisition of BASFs Industrial
Coatings business was announced,
which will strengthen our position.
Specialty Chemicals: Operating income
increased 1 percent, due to operational
efficiencies and lower costs offsetting

the effects of price deflation and adverse

currencies. Volumes were up 1 percent,
with positive developments mainly
in Industrial Chemicals being partly
offset by lower demand in oil related
segments. Revenue was down 7 percent due to the divestment of the Paper
Chemicals business, price deflation and
adverse currency effects. CW

PPG Completes $7.8 Million Investment

at Global Paint and Coatings Research
and Development Hub

PG has marked the completion

of a $7.8 million investment at
its Coatings Innovation Center
in Allison Park, Pennsylvania, 20 minutes from its global headquarters in
Pittsburgh.
The upgrades to the facility include
increased laboratory and testing space
and upgraded equipment that improves
the technical capabilities of the companys primary research and development
facility for paint and coatings. The upgrades enhance PPGs resources for creating and testing sealants, adhesives and
pretreatment solutions; for simulating
the environments where customers use
its automotive and industrial paints and
coatings; and for training distributors,
painters and collision-repair professionals to successfully use the companys automotive refinish coatings.
The PPG Coatings Innovation
Center continues to provide an elite research and development environment
where PPG scientists can ensure our customers have access to the most inventive
coatings solutions, said David Bem, PPG
vice president, science and technology,
and chief technology officer-elect. Many
times, the breakthroughs that help us to
deliver color, durability and functionality in coatings for everything from cars
and trucks to consumer electronics and
heavy machinery begin at our Coatings
Innovation Center.
Michael McGarry, PPG president and
CEO, said, As PPG continues to expand
its paint and coatings portfolio, the companys science and technology activities
become increasingly important for ongoing advancement to address our customers changing needs. Because it is the
hub of our global research and development activities, enhancing the Coatings
Innovation Center strengthens PPGs
overall capabilities as well as its presence

in the Pittsburgh area home to our global headquarters for more than 130 years.
The investment at PPGs Coatings
Innovation Center enhances three main
areas:
The facilitys renovated coatings application center provides two robotic spray booths with environmental
controls for variable temperature,
humidity and airflow. The booths
enable PPG to replicate the manufacturing environments of customers
around the world to test the application of automotive, industrial and
performance coatings products under a wide range of conditions, such
as relative humidity ranging from 15
percent to 95 percent.
Space has been converted to laboratories for synthesis, adhesives and
sealants, and pretreatment solutions
to accommodate increased staffing
and upgraded equipment that support PPGs growing development
needs in these areas.
A completely renovated, 9,000 sq. ft.
automotive refinish training center
now provides state-of-the art facilities, including two new spray booths,
a prep station, upgraded equipment
and two large classrooms where
body-shop and collision-repair professionals can learn about PPG products and application techniques.

At BASF weve harnessed the power
of a world-class talent pool and become
one of the regions major employers. The
Refinish Competence Center is another
sign of our commitment to the area.
Our new training center brings us
closer to our customers in the Southwest,
said Nick Maloof, BASF Automotive
Refinish Zone Manager. The new facility can also support industry and networking events, for up to 50 people, to
enhance customer interactions. We also
look forward to hosting a variety of business groups and industry organizations in
our new facility.

Lori Gatmaitan, executive director, SAE Foundation Canada.

Through this program, young
students learn how to apply science and technology concepts by solving
real-world problems in a team setting,
communicate clearly, raise questions, assimilate information and work cooperatively towards common goals. This
structure helps to engage and inspire students at the earliest age possible to pursue
careers in sought-after science fields.
AWIM activities incorporate curriculum built around the Engineering Design
Experience. These programs require students to work in teams to solve a design
challenge by analyzing who a product is for
and what must be accomplished; gathering
and synthesizing data; designing, developing and testing a prototype; and presenting
their findings and ideas. By integrating science and technology with other subject areas, students can make connections across
disciplines that are personally relevant to
them. In addition, professionals that work
in the science and technology industry volunteer in the AWIM program to serve as a
role model, community liaison and professional resource to participants.
PPG supports the importance of
demonstrating the significance of science,
technology, engineering and math to students at a young age, said Sue Sloan,
PPG corporate global social responsibility executive director.

Sika Opens Two New

Factories in Southeast Asia
Sika is systematically implementing its
Strategy 2018 by entering into new markets and opening six to eight factories a
year, and has now further expanded its
presence in Southeast Asia, the company
stated. With one new production plant
for concrete admixtures in Myanmar and
another one in Cambodia, Sika is increasing its proximity to customers in these
growing markets and continuing its successful expansion.
The new production facility in
Myanmar represents a milestone. As the
first construction chemicals supplier in
the country, Sika is manufacturing locally
in a factory near to Yangon.
Heinz Gisel, regional manager Asia/
Pacific, said: By establishing a local
production facility, Sika is setting new
standards in customer proximity, product
quality and direct market development.
Customers benefit from short production

PPG Publishes Data

Sheet on UL Recognized
Component Coating
Systems
PPGs industrial coatings business has
published three data sheets documenting
PPG coating systems recognized under
the Component Recognition Program of
Underwriters Laboratories (UL) for the
UL 1332 Standard for Organic Coatings
for Steel Enclosures for Outdoor
Use Electrical Equipment (DTOV2).
Electrical equipment manufacturers that
coat metal substrates used in the assembly of transformers, substations, electrical enclosures, switchgear and lighting
commonly require that coating systems
they specify meet the requirements in
Standard UL 1332.
The three data sheets cover liquid,
powder and electrocoat (e-coat) products individually and list brands, resin
chemistries and coating systems for
each technology that are UL Recognized
Components under Standard UL 1332.
The data sheets also detail the pretreatment systems and substrates for which
the recognition is valid.
The UL 1332 standard is a set of requirements developed to determine if a
system composed of a metallic substrate
pretreated and finished with an organic
coating system can achieve corrosion
resistance equal to that provided by uncoated, hot-dipped, mill-galvanized G90
metal. Testing includes 600 hours of
neutral salt spray and 1,200 hours of
carbon-dioxide/sulfur-dioxide exposure
on multiple scribed and unscribed panels
finished with the tested coating applied in
varying thicknesses.

International Coatings Scene Latin America

Latin American Aviation Lifts Coatings Demand

by Charles W. Thurston
Latin America Correspondent

atin Americas relatively steady

economic growth suggests that the
regional demand for aviation coatings will more than double GDP expansion, predicted by the World Bank to be
1.0 percent this year and back to a more
normal 2.3 percent next year.
Boeing projects Latin American
airlines will need 3,050 new airplanes
valued at $350 billion in the next two
decades, tripling the regions current
fleet size. Over the long term, Latin
American economies will grow faster
than the rest of the world, said Donna
Hrinak, the president of Boeing Latin
America. This growth will create increased passenger traffic in the region
and drive Latin American airlines to
expand and compete for business that
has traditionally been dominated by
foreign operators.
The CAVOK 2015-2025 Global/
Regional Fleet Forecast for Latin America
predicts that the region will have an 8.0
percent share of the global commercial
aircraft fleet, expanding at 4.7 percent
per year, to a value of $27.8 billion in
2025, up some $5 billion from last year,
according to Tom Cooper, the executive
vice president of the Atlanta-based division of Oliver Wyman.
Similarly, Latin American air traffic will grow by a projected 4.7 percent
annual rate over the next 20 years, compared with a projected 4.6 percent global
average, according to one analysis.
Not surprisingly, the regions $3.2 billion Maintenance, Repair and Overhaul
(MRO) aviation market is estimated to
grow even faster, at 7.3 percent, according to Cooper. Improvements in corrosion control at the factory and at the
MROs are reducing coatings consumption in airframe repair, he said. The intervals between inspections is increasing,

Chart source: Cavok

and then they find less corrosion. Now

most airliners are repainted only every
five to six years.
A paint job for a Boeing 777 might require 40 gallons of primer and 46 gallons
of topcoat paint, depending on the color
scheme, noted Chris G. Athansopoulos,
the director of global sales for the
Aerospace Division, of Hentzen Coatings.
Multiple colors can readily double the
price of re-painting, others point out.
With a back-of-the-envelope estimated cost of painting a new multi-color
commercial aircraft at around $150,000,
the 3,000 new aircraft Latin America will
purchase over the Boeing 10-year forecast
period includes some $450 million worth
of coatings; at an average rate of 100 deliveries per year, the component cost of
coatings would be $15 million per year.
Many of the components for new aircraft
are manufactured in Mexico, where some
300 companies are active. Boeing alone
imports $1 billion worth of parts from
Mexico every year.
If these new aircraft are painted every
six years, the MRO coatings the region
consumes maintaining the new aircraft
will be worth some $75 million per year.
Given the current regional commercial
aircraft fleet of about 1,750 now, MRO
coatings every three years on the existing
fleet will continue to cost about $45 million per year. So total MRO coatings may

20 | Coatings World www.coatingsworld.com

represent some $120 million per year in

Latin America moving forward. Adding
the coatings component of new aircraft
purchases (from calculation in prior
paragraph), the region may consume a
grand total of some $135 million worth
of aviation coatings per year.
The market positions of the major
coatings suppliers to Latin America seem
to vary greatly. In a 2014 presentation by
Michael H. McGarry, PPG executive vice
president, the company estimated that
aerospace coatings represent a $1 billion market led by PPG, and followed by
Akzo-Nobel. Mark Cancilla, the global
director for aerospace coatings at PPG in
Sylmar, CA, reckons that Latin America
represents about 10 percent of the global
market. Latin America, and especially
Mexico, is exciting for us. There are a lot
of sub-suppliers there and more customers relocating there, he noted.
Axalta Coating Systems is another
player in the region, but focuses more
on the smaller aircraft segment of the
market: We only sell aviation coatings
into the small and executive aircraft
OEMs, noted Matthew Winokur, the
vice president of corporate affairs for the
Philadelphia-based company.
Similarly, BASF Aerospace activities
related to aerospace coatings typically involve pigments and additives, as opposed
to directly supplying finished coatings

to the air framers or MRO companies,
notes Paulo Springmann, the aerospace
business development manager for BASF
Canada, based in Mississauga, Ontario.
Sherwin-Williams distribution hubs
for its aviation products, through
Hawker Beechcraft Services, are in
Monterrey and Toluca.
Among OEMs selling aircraft into
Latin America, Boeing is one leader. Marc
Allen, Boeing internationals president,
was recently quoted in local press indicating that the company had an order of 100
aircraft from Mexico. Aeromexico, the
largest airline in Mexico, expects to expand its fleet this year by five aircraft, including both Boeing aircraft and Embraer
equipment. The airline now owns roughly
40 percent of Mexicos total aircraft fleet.
Brazils aviation market, unlike
Mexicos highly diversified industry, is
concentrated primarily in the ex-state
company Embraer, which has become a
global leader in the executive and small
jet (under 130 seats) industry. Embraer
sales last year hit $1.6 billion, and deliveries in first quarter of 2016 included
44 jets, up 37.5 percent compared to the
prior year quarter. The company also reported a backlog worth $21.9 billion as
of the end of first quarter this year.
A year ago, PPG Industries completed
a $40 million expansion of its Sumar,
So Paulo, coatings manufacturing facility. Resin produced at the facility will be
used to manufacture PPGs electrocoat
products to meet growing demand from
automotive OEMs and industrial coatings customers in the region, including
the aerospace segment.
Brazils economy is expected to continue to retract at about -1.7 percent this
year before returning to a positive growth
rate of 2.4 percent next year, according to
the World Bank.
The highly diversified Mexican aerospace industry has been growing at an
average 17 percent per year since 2004,
according to the Federacion Mexicana
de la Industria Aeroespacial (FEMIA),
the Mexican association of the aerospace industry. The major OEMs are
backlogged for years, so sub-contractors
for parts have plenty of work available,
noted Athansopoulos.

Industrial surface finishing, including aviation and automotive sectors, will grow at
double the rate over five percent of the
national growth rate this year, predicts
Marcelo lvarez Martnez, the president
of the Asociacin Mexicana de Industriales
de Acabados Superficiales (AMAS), or the
Mexican association of surface finishing
industries, speaking at his groups latest
annual meeting, Surface Finishing Mxico
(SFM) 2016, in Quertaro.
Mexicos GDP is forecast to grow by
2.8 percent this year, up from 2.5 percent
in 2015, and to continue expanding by an
additional 0.2 percent per year through
2018, according to the World Bank.
Mexicos Secretario de Economa,
Ildefonso Guajardo, estimates that aerospace exports by Mexico in 2015 reached
$7.2 billion. Exports by the industry are
expected to exceed $12 billion by the end
of this decade.
Some $2 billion have been invested
in Mexican aerospace over the past
three years, according to a statement by
Gerardo Ruiz Esparza, the El Secretario
de Comunicaciones y Transportes (SCT),
or transportation minister. The aerospace
industry in Queretaro State, southeast of
Mexico City, alone attracted a total of
$200 million in investment last year, according to a press statement by Marco
Antonio del Prete Tercero, the Secretara
de Desarrollo Sustentable del Estado de
Quertaro (SEDESU), or minister of sustainable development.
French aerospace giant Safran recently opened a new facility in Quertaro,
Snecma America Engine Service, for the
repair parts for CFM Internationals
CFM56 engine, destined for the U.S.
market. This is the 10th Safran plant in
Mexico, and it also will become part of
the global supply chain for the LEAP engine used in the Boeing 737 MAX. The
plant also will begin to supply parts to
Chinas Commercial Aircraft Corporation
of China (COMAC), later this year.
Another state that has become a major
aviation parts power is Coahuila, which
shares its northern border with the middle of Texas southern border, about 150
miles from San Antonio, Texas. Alcoa,
for example, is increasing its total investment in Ciudad Acua to $30 million,

May 2016 www.coatingsworld.com

including metal finishing, according to

the Mexico-Now Aerospace Bulletin.
Alcoa unit Howmet de Mexico is supported through a Del Rio, Texas office.
Similarly, General Electric subsidiary
Unison Industries recently opened a $2
million new plant in Saltillo, Coahuila,
for accessories and control systems will
be produced. GE has also opened a new
on-wing repair facility in Rio de Janeiro.
Other key aerospace manufacturing centers in Mexico are located in Baja California,
Chihuahua and Nuevo Len States.
Regarding other aviation manufacturing and service hubs, Cooper forecasted
that the global Maintenance, Repair and
Overhaul market would grow from $67
billion in 2015 to $100 billion by 2025.
By section, the airframe represents 17 percent of all MRO service by value, engines
about 47 percent, other components 19
percent and line service 18 percent. Latin
Americas share of the MRO market is
now about $3.2 billion, with a 7.3 percent growth rate, the forecast indicates.
Among other MRO service hub locations in Latin America is El Salvador.
Canadas Aeroman built $60 million
worth of new hangars in Comalapa,
Chalatenango Department, over the past
few years to service six aircraft simultaneously. Ernesto Ruiz, the company CEO,
told local press that Aeromans plans
include additional capacity for aircraft
maintenance over the next five years.
The company estimated that it would hit
two million man-hours at aircraft frame
maintenance last year.
Similarly, AvioTrade, based in Miami, in
September 2015 opened its first engine repair facility in the San Jos Aviation Cluster,
in the Zaragoza, La Libertad Department,
El Salvador, to repair the PT6 engine common in private aircraft. With commercial
clients said to include Avianca, Aeroman,
Latam, Copa, VRG, and American Airlines,
the company now has plans for initial facilities in Brazil and Mexico.
And in Colombia, Avianca is building
out its Avianca Aeronautical Center next
to the Jos Mara Crdova International
Airport in Rionegro, within the
Antioquia Department of Colombia.
The facility will handle two wide-body
aircraft simultaneously. CW

he European sector for coil coatings

and other prepainted metals is battling
against a new surge in imports, triggered by overcapacity in Chinas steel and aluminium industries.
So far, however, the European coil coatings segment has been doing well in resisting
an overall steep rise in imports into Europe of
steel and aluminium. Last year steel imports
into the European Union went up by 22 percent, while in the fourth quarter they soared by
nearly 50 percent.
Rising imports has driven down prices with
the global price of Chinese steel almost two
thirds lower than it was four years ago. World

prices of aluminium plummeted by 30 percent

last year.
Prepainted metals suppliers in Europe have
been helped by the EUs imposition of antidumping duties on Chinese coated exports but
exporters elsewhere in Asia, as well as in Latin
America and Russia and Ukraine, have also
been targeting the EU market.
Traditionally Europe has lead the world in
coil coatings in terms of consumption and development of technologies. It continues to grow
despite the EUs stagnant economy so it has
been an attractive market for the worlds leading coil coatings producers like AkzoNobel,
BASF, Valspar, PPG and Beckers.
It is also benefitting from a long-term strategy
in the steel and aluminium to move away from
commodity-grade products into added-value ones.
European shipments of organic coatings,
mainly coil coatings, have doubled since the

early 1990s, according to figures from
the Brussels-based
European Coil
Coatings Association (ECCA). Now organic coatings consumption in the steel
and aluminium markets in Europe has
returned to its pre-2008 levels, while
shipments of all steel and aluminium
products remain below the amounts before the financial crisis.

launched last year a quality label scheme

called ECCA Premium which covers aspects of steel and aluminium products
such as color durability, corrosion resistance and suitability for creative design.
The sector already has a quality label
called Qualicoat, which was introduced
around 30 years ago to deal initially
with the quality of post-painted alu-

The building sector has become by far the

biggest market accouting for 72 percent
of sales, with automotive and domestic
applications being the next two largest
segments...
In addition to a big increase in sales of
coil and other prepainted coatings, there
has been an expansion and strengthening
of a whole supply chain covering coating operators and equipment, as well as
products such as pre-treatment chemicals.
The strength of this supply chain,
backed by high quality product and manufacturing standards, has proved to be a
tough barrier for importers to overcome.
In 2010-11, just as the European coatings sector was struggling to recover from
the 2008 catastrophe, imports of coated
steel sheets went up by 29 percent but
then plummeted by 33 percent in 2012.
Since then they have started to increase again but now are showing signs
of levelling out. Meanwhile output of
steel sheets with metal anti-corrosion
coatings in Europe has been going up by
about 6 percent annually and of sheets
with organic coatings by around 2 percent annually. The share of imports in the
European coated steel coated sheets sector seems to be softening.
A major reason for the easing pressure
from imports in the domestic sector for
coil and other prepainted metal products
has been the mounting concerns about
the low quality of the imports among
both producers and customers.
In response to these worries ECCA

minium and later steel. ECCA reckons

its label is more suited to prepainted
products because it is broader in scope
and more comprehensive.
ECCA Premium aims to embrace
within a single label all relevant existing European and international
standards applying to not just product
quality but also manufacturing and environmental standards.
It endeavors to tackle the apparent
aberration under which the provisions of
REACH, the EUs strict legislation for the
application of environmental, health and
safety standards to chemicals are not being enforced with imported coil coatings.
ECCA Premium does not certify coil and
prepainted products which chemicals in
their coating on the REACH list of substances of very high concern (SVHC) such
as carcinogens.
We know there are a lot imported prepainted materials coming into
Europe which do not meet quality specifications, said Yvonne Barcelona, ECCA
managing director. Chinese imports are
less of a problem now after the imposition of EU anti-dumping duties. But
they are coming in from other countries,
such as India.
Our quality label scheme is helping to
curb low quality imports and to reduce

May 2016 www.coatingsworld.com

the share of low standard imports in the

European market, she added.
Qualicoat, which is operated through
national trade associations, the vast majority of them in Europe, has been extending its coverage along supply chains.
Its branch in UK and Ireland has, for example, just drawn up guidelines for storage conditions for powder coatings with
best before dates on the grounds that
those kept for long periods can cross-link
and semi-cure before application.
We are finding that customers are
now insisting on products having quality labels, said Josef Schoppig, managing director of Qualicoat, whose
international headquarters are in Zurich,
Switzerland. It is very difficult now to
gain a contract for architectural applications, for example, in the Spanish public
sector without a quality label.
The building sector has become by
far the biggest market in Europe for the
coil coatings sector accounting for 72
percent of sales, with automotive and
domestic appliances being the next two
largest segments with shares of 7 percent
and 6 percent respectively, according to
ECCA figures.
Prepainted metal (now) has numerous applications in construction,
thanks to its aesthetic and technical
characteristics,said
Mario Palermo,
president of ECCAs French group. (It)
has become a favorite among many architects and contracting authorities.
Importers of coated products face
a stiff challenge gaining entry into the
Europe architectural market because of
the priority being given by the sector to
proven quality.
However steel and aluminium producers in emerging economies like
China, India and Brazil are beginning
to move into the upper end of the market. Non-European companies are entitled to the ECCA Premium certification.
Associations in China, Middle East and
Russia have joined the Qualicoat scheme.
Since the European quality label
schemes are being applied to supply
chains rather than just products, it may
be a while before large numbers of potential exporters into Europe can meet its
quality standards. CW

Tangier in the first quarter of 2017 according to top officials quoted by Kyodo
News Agency in mid-April.
Although the company is yet to issue an official statement confirming the
amount to be invested in the new plant
and details of when the project will break
ground, Kansais choice of Morocco seems
to be in response to Moroccos proximity to Europe where PPG Industries, with
which Kansai has established an alliance to serve certain automotive original
equipment manufacturers (OEMs), said
there is economic weakness in the years
during and following the recession without a substantive recovery since.
A key partner in the new automotive coatings plant venture will be the
European automakers in Morocco led by
French firm Renault which nearly four
years ago opened North Africas largest
car plant in Morocco in an area reports
described as being close to Europe which
offers tax benefits to manufacturers.
Kansai also appears to have been attracted by the general good performance
of Moroccos automotive industry which
the Harvard School of Business (HBS)
said in a report has had a strong value
proposition because of the countrys
strategic location close to Europe and
emerging markets, free trade agreements
with large consumer markets, and a stable political environment.
The industry, HBS said, has also
benefitted from the significant government investments to make the business
environment more attractive such as in
training centers, special economic zones,
infrastructure, and tax incentives for automotive producers.
The report stated that by 2013
Moroccos two OEMs of Renault and
SOMACA produced 167,000 cars and
the automotive industry had attracted

10 suppliers which could be considered

global suppliers with the sector earning an estimated $2.5 billion from export revenues.
The HBS report, The Automotive
Cluster in Morocco: Competitiveness and
Recommendations for Future Growth,
also said Morocco has a large number
of free trade agreements, which cumulatively gives them access to 55 countries,
representing 60 percent of world GDP.
Kansai, among other top coatings
companies eyeing a share of the growing North Africa market, has also been
attracted by Moroccos strong economic
growth, up to 4.4 percent last year up
from the 2.4 percent according to World
Bank estimates.
The emergence of new growth drivers
in higher value-added export industries
and the expansion of Moroccan companies in Western Africa are potentially
creating the conditions for Morocco to
become a hub for trade and investment
between Europe and Africa and boost its
position in global value chains, the bank
said in a report on Moroccos economic
outlook released early this year.
London-based Information Research
Ltd., a global industry consultancy which
focuses on paints and coatings market reports and data, estimated that by the end
of 2016, Morocco will produce slightly
more than 200,000 tons of paint behind
Africa market leaders Egypt, South Africa
and Algeria. Moroccos paints market
share is approximately 16 percent of
Africas total production previously estimated at 1 million tons.
Kansais good performance in Africa
in 2015 raises the prospects of the companys continuing growth in a continent
where key sectors such as building and
construction define the trends in paints
and coatings consumption.
Apart from Morocco, Kansai is a key
player in the markets of South Africa and
Zimbabwe, which returned profits for the
company in the last financial year.
In 2015, the company said that although the South African economy was
weak, sales continued to increase as a result of sales promotion efforts. Kansai
Paints entered the South African market
through the acquisition of Freeworld

Coatings under a $300 million deal

which saw it take 93.37 percent of the
then Johannesburg Stock Exchange
listed firm, a move some described as a
hostile takeover.
Profits also increased despite the
impact of factors including soaring raw
material prices and investment in sales
promotion, Kansai said in its full year
report for 2015.
The bullish performance by Kansai
in Africa was also boosted by its
Zimbabwean subsidiary, Astra Industries
Ltd., which was consolidated in July
2013, with the company saying the entity
contributed to the consolidated business
results for 2015.
Kansai teamed up with Astra management and staff in 2013 to acquire a
63.25 percent stake in Astra Industries
Limited in a $5.5 million deal with
the Finance Trust of Zimbabwe Ltd.
Kansais products are already in
many African markets such as Kenya,
Mozambique, Seychelles, Mauritius,
Malawi, Botswana, Namibia and
Zambia among others.
And in Morocco, the coatings markets
have attracted other leading global paint
makers including BASF which two years
ago launched R-M, the premium automotive refinish paint brand.
The company said during the launch
the automotive coatings market in
Morocco is dynamic and fast-growing.
The country has almost 3 million vehicles in circulation and major automobile manufacturers are investing in new
technologies throughout their networks
to repair vehicles in the best possible conditions, BASF said.
For BASF, the automotive industry
is a major sector, and we want to develop
complete and innovative solutions for
leading car manufacturers. The company said it anticipates $389 million in
combined sales in fiscal 2016 ending next
March, about a twofold increase from
four years ago.
The move by Kansai to expand in
Morocco is expected to add to the
growing trend in Africa where coatings
companies are taking advantage of the
resilience of the region amidst global
economic challenges. CW

Chinas total coatings output in 2016 will be
18 million tons, which will only be a 5 percent
increase over 2015. Apparently relatively slow,
which is less than two figures, but stable growth
will be the new phenomenon for Chinas coating
industry in the near future. The thirteenth five

pushing Chinas whole economy towards environmentally friendly, coatings varieties with low
VOC or no VOC will outpace the whole coatings industrys development in China.

Domestic demand will provide

new growth opportunities
The trend of Chinas real estate market still has
a major impact to the coatings industry.
In February, 2016, the value of Chinas total export is 821.8 billion yuan, decreased by
20.4 percent over the same month of last year.
With external demand continuously decreasing, domestic demand in China becomes more
and more important in support of the continuous growth of the Chinese economy. And the
Chinese real estate industry is still one of the
pillar industries, which has significant implications to many related industries, including
coatings and adhesives. In the first two months
of this year, China sold a total of 112.4 million square meters of houses and apartments,
increased by 28.2 percent compared with the
same period of last year. Among this number,
the total area of residential houses and apartments grew by 30.4 percent, and the total area
for office building grew by 11 percent. The recovery of the real estate industry seems to be on

track in the first quarter of 2016.
If the trend is consistent for the entire
year for 2016, this could transform into
another growth opportunity for the coatings industry, especially for the architecture coatings market sector, in China. But
the fluctuation of the real estate market
is foreseeable too, and the final impact to
coatings market is not clearly visible at
the moment. The latest regulation policy
in Chinas real estate industry is to restrict
house and apartment purchase in tier
one cities, such as Beijing, Shenzhen and
Shanghai, but the governments in tier 3
and tier 4 cities, on the contrary, are loosening their real estate policies in order to
encourage real estate transaction.
Although the Chinese coatings producers are paying more and more attention on repainting market, namely
refurbishing or redecoration projects, it
is unlikely that this new growing segment will replace the new house and
apartment market for architecture coatings anytime soon, but developing brand
awareness in a new market segment normally takes years of marketing efforts, so
the companies who move early towards
this direction could take advantage of
their position when the market scales up
in the future.

Wood coatings market will

be a hot battle field
Unlike some other coatings segments, the
wood coatings market is still very fragmented in China. No single brand has
a dominant position in wood coatings
market like Nippon Paint in architecture
coatings, or AkzoNobel in powder coatings. Instead, the Chinese wood coatings

market is represented by private domestic companies. This phenomenon of the

wood coatings market is closely linked
with the market fragmentation of the
Chinese wood furniture market. Close
customer relationships with wood furniture customers, who are mainly domestic
companies too, enabled domestic wood
coatings manufawcturers to compete
with or even defeat foreign brands in the
past. However, the new market demand
for high quality waterborne wood coatings has created a new hot battlefield in
the last two years, which could reshuffle
the current ranking of the wood coatings players. The new trend provides a
new opportunity for the wood coatings
companies who can meet the customers
demand both for high quality, such as
coatings hardness, and environmental
demand, such as low VOC or no VOC.
Foreign brands with technical advantages
could take advantage of this new trend,

China sold a total of 24.6 million vehicles, increased by 4.7 over 2014. In this
number, 21 million are passenger vehicles, the first time in history for this sector
to surpass a new milestone: 20 million.
Compared with 2014, passenger vehicles
grew by 7.3 percent over 2014. And even
faster was the growth of new energy automobile sector, which sold a total of 331
thousand vehicles in 2015, an increase of
340 percent over 2014. The association

Aerospace
Coatings Market

Increases in both travel and trade are pushing the demand for aerospace coatings
ever higher.
Catherine Diamond, Associate Editor

he global aerospace market, driven in large part by

the Asia-Pacific region, is expected to be worth an
estimated $2,991.38 million by 2019. Markets and
Markets, a global market research and consulting company,
recently announced these findings in a report titled Aerospace
Coatings Market by End-user Industry (Commercial, Military
& General Aviation), by User Type (Original Equipment
Manufacturer (OEM) & Maintenance, Repair & Overhaul
(MRO)), & by Region (North America, Europe, Asia-Pacific,
& Row) - Global Forecast to 2019, which analyzes the global
aerospace coatings market in regard to market drivers, trends
and regions.
According to the report, the global aerospace coatings market is significantly penetrating its end-user industries, while the
characteristics of the end-products differ as per the requirement
of end-user industries and for different user types. Researchers
found that the commercial segment has dominated the aerospace
coatings industry, largely driven by the entry of new airlines and

expansion of existing airlines.

The Asia-Pacific region is estimated to grow at a high CAGR
of 7.79 percent from 2014 to 2019 with its growing demand for
aerospace coatings in different end-user industries, especially for
commercial and military segments. The aerospace coatings market in North America is estimated to grow at a CAGR of 5.05
percent from 2014 to 2019, the report stated.
Researchers at Markets and Markets found that the U.S.,
China, Japan, France, Germany, India and Russia are expected
to persist as successful aerospace coatings markets. The markets
in China and India are driving the Asia-Pacific aerospace coatings market due to increasing cargo traffic, rising number of air
travellers, and international trade.
The market size, in terms of value, of the global aerospace
coatings market was estimated at $2,109.64 million in 2013
and is projected to reach $2,991.38 million by 2019, at a CAGR
of 5.96 percent from 2014.
The high demand across the industries, such as commercial,

military, and MRO segments will increase the overall aerospace
coatings consumption, researchers found.

Mergers as opportunities
Airline mergers are of significant interest for aerospace coatings
manufacturers, as they represent enormous potential. According
to Mark Cancilla, global platform director aerospace coatings,
PPG Aerospace, the industry is always impacted by mergers because they drive livery changes for at least one of the airline
fleets being merged, if not both.
Of course, this often provides significant opportunities to
the aerospace coatings suppliers, filling capacity in our factories, he said. This can also create some issues for suppliers
who are not able to manage large fluctuations in demand.
John Griffin, business director, North America for AkzoNobel
Specialty Coatings, said that mergers contribute to the health of
the industry, and this, in turn, helps to sustain and drive growth
for coatings.
AkzoNobel has been involved in some large re-branding
programs that enhance airlines image and increases coatings
demand (for example, US Air/American Airlines and Avianca/
TACA), he said.
Mergers can also provide new opportunities for manufacturers, according to Chris Athansopoulos, director of global sales,
Aerospace Division, Hentzen Coatings. For those not currently involved in the exterior market, mergers can open up new
chances to participate.
Mergers have definitely had a major effect on the market
as the need for paint increases considerably, Athansopoulos
said. Exterior surfaces will need to be repainted especially if
the whole livery changes, as in the case of American Airlines.
The same did not occur with the United and Continental merger.
The Continental livery remained the same and only the name
was painted over the aircraft. The United aircraft was totally
repainted. In many cases, the interior colors will also need to
be repainted.

Increased demand and performance

Though the aerospace market can seem slow to change due to
strict regulations and requirements, manufacturers in this market have report increased demand in general.
According to Cancilla, PPG has seen demand for aerospace
coatings grow as the global economy grows and as the number
of people who can afford the cost of flying increases.
The aerospace coatings supply requirements increase as the
industry grows, he said. Today, we see increased requirements
from the OEM segment where aircraft build rates continue to
grow in the commercial and general aviation segments. And we
continue to see moderate increases in the military segment. The
supply of materials into the aftermarket also continues to grow
as the global fleet of aircraft continues to rise. While todays
materials and products are quite robust and last longer than
materials produced in the past, the size of the industry continues
to grow at a rate such that the coatings suppliers do see annual
volume increases.

Cancilla added that customer demand for increased performance is always growing, as are their definitions of performance.
Though the industry is moving away from chromated corrosion inhibitors, he said, PPG customers still expect excellent
corrosion resistance from the new chrome-free products that are
being developed. Chrome is a very robust corrosion inhibitor,
and when chrome-free products are developed it is important
that all aspects of the coating system are addressed to ensure
that similar, if not improved, corrosion inhibition properties are
achieved. So, aircraft service life should not to be sacrificed as
new products are applied, he said.
Griffin said that AkzoNobel has seen both a solid financial
performance in the aerospace industry and stable production
rates, which contribute to strong demand for coatings in both
new constructions maintenance applications.
In terms of performance, Griffin said, customers want reduced costs, faster cycle times, improved efficiency and reduction of waste, particularly as production rates are at an
all-time high.
Maintenance stations also want these same benefits. There
is a lot of research effort going into the optimization of processes and we look to share best practices from within the industry as well as from outside (for example, from automotive), he
said. Airlines want to reduce their downtime. They also want
improved durability, allowing them to extend maintenance cycles. Customers also look for more environmentally progressive
products that reduce hazards to people and the environment.
Julie Voisin, aerospace product manager at Sherwin-Williams,
said that the industry has been moving towards basecoat
clearcoat, something that has been used in the automotive market
for decades now. She added that it has been in use in aerospace
for about five years, and is far from being fully implemented.
Basecoat clearcoat is seeing an uptick for several reasons, she
said. When dealing with paint for planes, you are painting such
a large area, and it isnt just a flat surface. It is horizontal, vertical, up and down a tail, under the belly, and so on. The paint is
performing several very valuable functions, including protecting the airframe from corrosion, protecting the entire structure,
and generally making the plane aesthetically pleasing. Clearcoat
gives the ability to put down multiple colors fast and to help it
maintain in spite of all the challenges it faces. Aerospace paint is
the only type of exterior paint that has to handle such extraordinary temperature changes, as well as exposure to light.
Voisin added that, as far asthe interior cabin is concerned,
there are so many people coming in and out through the day
that the interior has to be stain, scratch and mar resistant. On
both sides of the plane, she said, the cabin or exterior, there are
lots of unique ways in which coatings have to perform.
Andreas Ossenkopf, director - head of aviation at
Mankiewicz, said that the entire industry is experiencing growth
at present and so the demand for coatings is expanding along
with it.
Ossenkopf added that much more can now be achieved with
the paint on aircraft exteriors, thanks to the development of
basecoat clearcoat systems by Mankiewicz.

Where previously it was more efficient to use decals, today
one can use paint more efficiently. For example, working with
Brussels Airlines we recently supplied the Magritte and Trident
livery: solely paint was used for this, even for the fine facial features of the depicted artist and for complex, finely detailed structures that were like a birds nest. Previously, we would be forced
to use decals to achieve such effects, but now we use paint alone,
which is only possible due to the excellent drying times of the
basecoat and the paints special fade-out properties. These properties combined with the outstanding durability of the coating
compared to decals explain the increased demand, he said.
Mankiewicz has also witnessed a conversion from decals to
paint for aircraft interiors due to the advantages of the product.
Ossenkopf said the demand for this has exceeded the growth of
the market.
Athansopoulos said that Hentzen expects to see an increase in
aerospace coatings in both military and commercial markets. He
believes that overall market growth will parallel the OEM growth.
Growth, of course, is dependent upon meeting customer
need, and Athansopoulos said that Hentzens customers are
looking for products that are environmentally compliant, offer
improved exterior durability color and gloss retention, lower
weight, and faster dry time for reduction in down-time during
painting cycle.

Latest Technologies
Leading coatings manufacturers are frequently introducing new
technologies to the market. What follows is information on these
new innovations from select manufacturers, in their own words.

AkzoNobel
Basecoat clear coat (BC/CC) is rapidly becoming the industry
standard. AkzoNobel is four years into an 8-10 year adoption cycle. More than 50 percent of the paint supplied to both
Airbus and Boeing is still high solid content, but we expect this
to change to more than 90 percent BC/CC within the next two
years.
AkzoNobel said it invests a lot of research in the development of chromate-free products that have the right combination
of resin, inhibitor, adhesion and flexibility to provide maximum
protection with good in-service life, plus both cost and weight
reductions. The most important factor is that the OEMs are able
to trust them to behave over the life of the aircraft.
For external protection, the company has developed innovative technologies to solve the problems of achieving chromatefree anti-corrosion products. For AkzoNobel, Airbus and AMS
3095 approvals are in place, while for Boeing the approval is
pending.

Hentzen
Hentzen has recently introduced BCCC, heat absorption coatings, and chrome-free primers for the commercial market. For
the military, chrome-free primers for both interior and exterior
surfaces, and fluoropolymer polyurethane for topcoats. Epoxy
and polyurethane polymers are used in both the commercial and
military product development.
Hentzen was recently successful in qualifying a chrome-free
primer on the Lockheed Martin FSCM 81755 for use on the
F-16 program.

Mankiewicz
With regards to passenger-added values, Mankiewicz says it
has developed a solution for health, safety and environment: in
an era of Ebola and other infectious diseases, even more value
is added to the paint by the companys antimicrobial coatings.
Despite the confined spaces and use by many people, the paint
combats bacterial growth effectively, for example in the lavatory
and galley areas.
Further, Mankiewicz has been involved in the development
of riblet coatings: a paint that mimics the texture of sharkskin.
The introduction of nanoscale grooves into the topcoat results

in less aerodynamic surface friction, particularly when flying

at high speeds. In order to create the special texture the paint
must overcome some tricky challenges: it must remain pliable
long enough to form the riblets, but then dry as quickly as possible to maintain the corrugated surface. UV light is employed
to achieve the fast drying stage this requires. Of course, here
again the properties of durability, colour stability and resistance to the environment an aircraft coating must withstand
are important considerations.

PPG
PPGs aerospace coatings business continues to invest significantly in technology and product development. The company
has recently launched Aerocron electrocoat primer, the first in
the aerospace industry. As the original inventor of the electrocoat process and products, PPG has extended its industryleading position with the development of our Aerocron product
which utilizes anodic coating technology in a submersion coating process which increases material utilization from 30 to
60%, with spray processes to well over 90 percent with this process. Further, it saves significant weight of the coating material

LIFT (Lightweight Innovations for Tomorrow) has launched a technology project
focused on predicting the performance of
aluminum-lithium alloys important materials for the next generation of jet engines
and other aerospace applications. Lead
partners on the project, United Technologies Research Center and the University of
Michigan will work on advanced computer
simulations to better understand and predict the performance of aluminum-lithium
alloys in formed parts.
Engineers are interested in lithium
because it is the lightest metal found in
nature just one atomic number heavier than helium. When combined with
aluminum, lithium creates an alloy that
is both lighter and stronger than aluminum alone.
Alex Staroselsky, principal research
engineer, United Technologies Research

industrial operations. He said, Any company interested in these alloys may benefit from what we develop, but we are really focused on improving turbine engine
components for the aerospace industry.
The project expects to develop a predictive simulation tool that can be calibrated
and validated against practical experience and various lab experiments to be
performed at Case Western Research
University and The Ohio State University.
John Allison, LIFT Technical Leader
for Integrated Computational Materials Engineering (ICME), said, Earlier
aluminum-lithium alloys sometimes had
issues with cracking or performing in high
temperature environments. The latest
generation of these alloys show great improvements in several areas, but we really
need more integrated computer models
to predict their performance at a number
of steps, from their atomic structure right
up to a finished component.

design environments.
PPG Industries unveiled its 2016 Color Palette of the Year,
which showcases colors from the companys leading paint
brands: the GLIDDEN Paint, OLYMPIC Paints, PPG PAINTS
and PPG PITTSBURGH PAINTS lines.
At the time, the company cited consumers desire for journey,

newness and discovery as inspiration for Odyssey, the theme of

the 2016 PPG Color Palette of the Year. It represents the adventurous experience of life in a fast-changing world.
Glidden Paint named Cappuccino White (45YY 74/073) the
brands 2016 Color of the Year. A calm, sensitive and creamy
neutral, Cappuccino White creates a sense of delicacy and graceful design that promotes wellness, purity, mindfulness, balance,
privacy and peace. It is the color of seashells and ocean-smooth
rocks. The elegant white pairs well with delicate pastels and
light neutrals.
Blue Cloud (D48-5), a loud celebratory blue, is the 2016
Color of the Year for Olympic paints. An unapologetic blue
that is easily noticed, it is impactful, self-expressive, social and
glamorous. The tone is sparkling and deep, and it resembles the
ocean on an impossibly clear day. PPGs color experts recommend mixing this dazzling bright blue with softer, neutral tones.
PPG THE VOICE OF COLOR program, the color platform
for the PPG Paints and PPG Pittsburgh Paints brands, named
Paradise Found (PPG1135-5) as its 2016 Color of the Year. It is
a serious green that is nurturing as well as sturdy and protective.
While Paradise Found appears quiet and muffled, it provides a
sense of strength and organic energy that is reminiscent of the
military and natural environments. Keeping in mind the conscious awareness in society of an increasing need for security
and development of personal strength, consumers who prefer
this color likely wish to create a space that is naturally beautiful
and reassuringly safe. It is edgy, yet still comforting, and it inspired by the urban militia trends seen on fashion runways. CW

Strategies & Analysis Business Corner

DIFFERENTIATION:
The Anecdote to a Disruptive Threat Part 1
by Phil Phillips, PhD
Contributing Editor
phillips@chemarkconsulting.net

Differentiation Flow Diagram

t the core to any strategy, is differentiation. There are two ways

a company makes a desired profit:
(1) by performing a task considered valuable to its customer base & (2) by being
considered different from ones competitors
in a manner that is appreciated by that base.
Obviously, within the customers perception, the sharper a companys differentiation, the greater its market advantage. An
example of this sharp differentiation would
be PPGs E-Coat position in the metal coatings market places in North America. First,
PPG is the market leader in this technology
(>20 percent market share M. Porters definition) plus, PPG protects its ML position
by (a) constant and timely improvement innovations; (b) blanket service with highly
trained personnel; and (c) total systems
management. Another example would be
FORREST Paint with its high temperature
(>500) coatings & paints market niche
leadership position. FORREST focuses on
its technical strengths and the fact that their
claims of performance meet the stringent
high temperature performance tests, while
many others do not.
In any dynamic market segment, the
problem market differentiators run into
is the fact that over time, a differentiated
product/service, without judicious upgrades in that differentiation, results in
market share loss. The culprit in this scenario is usually internal to the company
itself. REASON: the growth created by
successful differentiation creates a more
multifaceted company . . . . this new complexity, in most instances, provides amnesia . . . . i.e., a disregard for what core
elements it has been good at.
This new complexity can be caused by
several different or a combination of different influences. It always comes from change
which could be the result of: acquisitions;

proliferation of services/products; the

C-suite becoming more abstract and less involved with the real business; consistency
loss, just to name a few.
Unfortunately, past successful differentiators, once starting a downhill trend,
have a compelling knee-jerk reaction and
feel they must thoroughly change their
original business model and reinvent
themselves. Most successful companies do
not reinvent themselves through periodic
dramatic change strategies. Successful
companies learn how to relentlessly build
on the differentiation model.
The basic key to a successful long-term
differentiation strategy is (1) constant
technical/service/market quest for a competitive difference & (2) making certain

May 2016 www.coatingsworld.com

that everyone in the organization is thoroughly and constantly on the same page.
It is important to note that successful
differentiators build their strategies on
a few brilliant forms of differentiation,
when performed as a system, support and
strengthen one another in the business
process. Again, it must be redundantly
mentioned, success is only as good as the
companys personnel being totally in the
know (transparency) while buying into
the specific differentiation strategy wholeheartedly. A totally transparent, in combination with overall buy-in throughout
the organization will result in dramatically improved quality and efficiency in
communications which, in turn, further
distinguishes it from competition. CW

Improving Component Life

in the Aerospace Sector

Hardide coating reactor being loaded.

Dr. Yuri Zhuk, Technical Director, Hardide Coatings, Oxfordshire, United Kingdom

n all industries, problem solving, technology developments,

and challenging standard practices are key to improving
performance. In extreme environments, or when wear is an
issue, the challenge is to maintain high performance while ensuring economic viability.
In the aerospace industry, leak-tightness of aircraft hydraulic
actuators and rotating shafts depends on seals. In abrasive and
corrosive environments, metal seal track or piston rod surface
finish degradation can accelerate the rate of seal wear by an
order of magnitude. In addition to rotating parts being subject
to wear, aerospace components are subject to extremes in temperature depending on the location of the aircraft.
Use of hard, wear-resistant coatings can help increase the
component life, improve dimensional stability and quality of
the surface finish and, as a result, prevent premature wear of the
seal. This can help reduce downtime cost and improve overall
competitiveness.
May 2016

We, as innovators in advanced surface coating technology,

have developed a range of surface engineering solutions to help
industry solve problems, improve efficiency and reduce downtime. Hardide coatings are advanced nano-structured tungsten
carbide coatings applied by low-temperature CVD (chemical
vapor deposition). Providing exceptional wear and corrosion
resistance combined with toughness and ductility, these patented coatings add value to components and reduce operational
costs by saving downtime, increasing productivity and improving performance.

Engineering a Solution
Hard chrome plating (HCP) has been widely used in the aerospace industry for many years. However, its production process is being banned in September 2017 under EU REACH
environmental and health and safety regulations, unless
otherwise authorized by the EU Commission, as HCP uses

carcinogenic hexavalent chromium salts in its production.
Increasingly tight restrictions are also being imposed in the
United States by OSHA.
A number of Hardide coating variants are available to solve
various problems such as wear, corrosion or galling. Coatings
are selected based on the individual application and/or operating environment, and can also be tailored to specific requirements. Hardide-A matches the standard thickness (50 100
microns) and hardness (800 1200 Hv) of HCP, simplifying the
transition without the need for dimensional changes or drawing re-design. HCPs intrinsic performance limitations hinder its
more demanding wear applications. Hardide-A outperforms it
in several key areas including enhanced protection against corrosion, wear, and chemically aggressive media, improved fatigue
life and a non-porous structure.
Other alternatives to HCP are available including thermal
spray, in particular high-velocity oxy-fuel (HVOF), and emerging
processes such as electroless-nickel composite plating, explosive
bonding, electro-deposited nanocrystalline cobalt-phosphorus
alloys and physical vapor deposition (PVD) coatings. To date,
HVOF and other spray coatings have been considered the best
available alternative to HCP. Although successful in some applications, each coating has limitations.
Thermal spray coatings can build a very thick and durable layer, but the resultant coatings are rough and porous in
structure and often require post-coating grinding which is not
possible on intricate shapes. PVD coatings can produce an extremely hard layer with accurately controlled thickness, but they
are very thin, typically less than four microns, and have limited load-bearing capacity. However, Hardide-A provides several advantages over HVOF such as the ability to coat complex
geometric shapes and internal bores, improved corrosion and
fatigue resistance, a smooth as coated low-friction surface and
ease of finishing.

Hardide coated components being precision measured.

The Coating Process

CVD coatings are crystallized from the gas phase atom-byatom in a vacuum chamber reactor at a temperature of approximately 935o F, producing a conformal coating which can
coat internal and external surfaces and complex shapes. The
coatings are a metallic tungsten matrix with dispersed nanoparticles of tungsten carbide typically between 1 and 10 nanometers in size. Dispersed tungsten carbide nano-particles give
the material enhanced hardness which can be controlled and
tailored to give a typical hardness range between 800 and 1200
Hv and, with some types of Hardide coating, up to 3500 Hv.
Abrasion resistance is up to 12 times better than hard chrome,
500 times better than Inconel and 4 times better than HVOF
tungsten carbide.
The CVD coating is applied by a batch process and can be
polished to Ra 0.2 0.3 microns (8-12 micro-inches) or superfinished to Ra 0.02 (0.8 micro-inches) without the need for
grinding. This finish does not degrade over time and is a very
effective and friendly counterface to seals as it protects metal
shafts or plungers from scratching and scoring that can result

Hardide coats internal surfaces and complex geometric shapes.

from rotation or reciprocation and which can accelerate the seal

wear. Unlike HVOF, the Hardide coating is free from a cobalt
binder which can be leached from the thermal spray coating in
a corrosive environment leaving a rough and abrasive surface.
As a result, the CVD coated metal counter-surface against which
the seal operates retains a good finish in operation for longer even in an abrasive or corrosive environment - and is less abrasive for the seal.
When dimensional accuracy is required, the coatings can be
diamond ground and super finished for critical bearing surfaces.

Improving Component Life in the Aerospace Sector FEATURE

CVD Tungsten Carbide Applications

Changes in technology are also driving the need for an alternative to traditional coating materials. The ability to print 3D
components means that manufacturers can seamlessly join parts
together to make one larger, more complex component. These
more complicated shapes cannot be fully coated with line-of12:19
PM techniques,
Page 1 such as HVOF, but internal surfaces can be
sight
coated with CVD.
Hardide tungsten carbide coatings have been used on
Eurofighter Typhoon jet components since 2005 and were recently technically approved by Airbus as a potential alternative
to HCP on some specific Airbus aircraft components. It met
the Airbus requirements for thick CVD tungsten carbide coatings and is a suitable alternative for hard chrome plating and
HVOF applied coatings. The coatings are also undergoing hard
chrome replacement tests with European helicopter manufacturer AgustaWestland, and a variety of tests for other applications in the sector.
Other typical aerospace applications include pins, bushes,
bearings, hooks, catches, landing gear, flap tracks and slats,
sleeves, rods, valves, pistons, actuators, compressors, shafts, hydraulic and pneumatic cylinders.
CVD tungsten carbide coatings also show good potential for
use in the space sector, particularly for satellites. The Hardide
coating has shown no signs of fracture after 100 nano-impact

tests, which means that its fracture toughness can protect the
components. Titanium and other metals in vacuum can lose
their protective oxide layer and any moving metal parts can suffer from galling. The coefficient of friction of the CVD coating is
the same in a vacuum as it is in an ambient environment and the
coating can provide excellent anti-galling protection for moving
joints such as robotic arms.

Benefits of CVD Coatings

In industries where equipment and tools are pushed to the extreme of their operating capacity, companies are seeking ways to
improve performance while delivering a reduction in downtime
and meeting environmental regulations.
Challenging environments such as exposure to chemicals, heat, abrasion, friction and corrosion put pressure
on the equipment, leading to failure of critical components,
downtime and loss of productivity. Our range of tungsten
carbide CVD coatings provides an effective solution for these
problems, ensuring extended life of components and less time
spent on maintenance.
Using the latest materials technology, the tungsten carbide
CVD coatings are a game-changing evolution in performance,
not just an improvement of existing coatings. The use of this
CVD process opens the door to enable a level of engineering
flexibility that is not possible with alternative technologies. CW

Hutton Delivers Another Ridler

Award-winning Fnish with PPG

1939 Oldsmobile convertible sporting a custom-mixed PPG ENVIROBASE High Performance metallic finish by renowned painter Charley Hutton won the 53rd annual Ridler Award during the recent 2016 Detroit Autorama. The
highly revered Ridler Award is presented to the most outstanding custom car or truck making its debut appearance at
the Autorama, an event now in its 64th year held every winter in the Motor City. It is Huttons fourth Ridler Award, after
previous wins in 2005, 2007 and 2013. It is also the fourth time in nine years that an entry painted with PPG automotive refinish
products took the prize.
Appropriately nicknamed Olds Cool, the gleaming custom build is owned by Bill and Debbie Thomas of Georgetown, Texas.
The car was meticulously constructed over four years by Harold Chapman and his team of talented craftsmen at Customs & Hot
Rods of Andice, also in Georgetown.
Hutton exclusively uses PPG automotive refinish products. He painted Olds Cool at his shop, Charley Huttons Color
Studio in Nampa, Idaho. Hutton is well-known for his ability to select and mix just the right colors to match a cars style and
character, giving it a distinctive look worthy of award-winning recognition. In this case, Hutton personally created the cars
custom color, Kona Brown. He used PPG Envirobase High Performance waterborne products and the GLOBAL REFINISH
SYSTEM brand D8152 Performance + Glamour Clearcoat to give Olds Cool its unique finish, ensuring that this car would
stand apart from the competition.
Winning the Ridler is a special honor, Hutton said. I always appreciate the opportunity to work with highly skilled craftsmen
that have such passion and drive. God blesses everyone with different talents, and the best part is working together to help build
someones dream. The Olds is beautiful, and the key to our success has been working with PPGs Envirobase High Performance
waterborne basecoat. Using Envirobase High Performance products made it possible to create the exact finish we wanted. When
mixing a custom color, Envirobase High Performance paint always exceeds my expectations; the colors that were able to achieve
are so clean and brilliant. CW
