THE STATIC AND DYNAMIC ANALYSIS OF ORTHOGONAL STRUCTURES
COMPOSED OF SHEAR WALLS AND FRAMES

Abstract
SUMMARY A method is presented for the elastic analysis of large multistorey buildings subjected to
lateral loads. Such a structure may be taken to consist of two sets of parallel frames intersecting at
right-angles. The frames may, within certain limitations, include arbitrary arrangements of shear
walls and line elements. Flexural deformations only are considered. The method is based on the
construction of a stiffness matrix for each frame in the structure, and its subsequent reduction, by
matrix partitioning methods, to a form which directly relates the lateral displacements to the
applied loads at each storey level within that frame. These lateral frame stiffnesses are then
combined, with the assumption that the floor slabs translate and rotate as rigid bodies, to form a
matrix equation, the solution of which gives the lateral deformations of the structure, and hence
the end loads on each member. It is shown that the principles of this static analysis may be
extended to allow for the calculation of the lowest natural frequency of vibration, the effects of the
distributed mass of the structure being taken into account.

Abstract Review
The target population of the study are the methods used for analysis of lateral loads
on buildings. It is an alternate method that can use by structural engineers in
determining the values of moments shears and axial forces cause by lateral forces.
The old methods only calculate flexural deformations and cannot calculate the
lateral deformation of orthogonal structures. The researcher use stiffness matrix for
each frame in order to relate the lateral displacements to the applied loads
.Because of this deformation values, the design for shear walls are more accurate
and effective on the structure. The hypothesis is that floor slabs translate and rotate
as rigid bodies in order to form the equations for the mentioned method. With this
assumptions all the moments, shear, axial and deformations of the structure can be
solved for the design procedure.
