Project Description

2.1

Introduction
With the rapid socio-economic development in India, the GOI felt the importance of the
multiplier effects in economy of Highway Development and took up comprehensive
development of the National Highways. Accordingly, Govemrnent of India created the National
Highway Authority of India (NHAI) and entrusted it with the responsibility of development of
the National Highways. The development of National Highways is being taken up by NFIAI
under different Phases of NHDP programs.
The National Highway, NH-6, starts from Kolkata in West Bengal and ends at Hazfua Port in
Gujarat. It is a major connecting link between the states of West Bengal, Odisha, Chhattisgartg

Maharashtra and Gujarat. The project road stretcll forming part of NH-6, starts from
Chhattisgarh - Orissa Border (Km 88.00) and ends at Aurang in Chhattisgarh (Km 239).It is being
taken up for widening and strengthening to 4 lanes with paved shoulder standard under NHDP
Phase - IV.
The project road stretch falls in the districts of Raipur & Mahasamund in Chhattisgarh State. (The
project road passes through Bamawapura), one of the major tourist attractions. It crosses River
Mahanadi at Km 230. The settlements of Saraipali, BaSn4 Pithor4 Patewa and Tumgaon lie along
the project corridor. Alignment of the project road and its surrounding road network is shown in
Figure 2-L : below.

The proposed project highway is 150.4 Km long
is part of NH_6(53).
The road is recently made a part of Asian
Highw ay (AH-a6) photo enclosed

Present Corridor and Terrain


Project corridor has a two lane carriag eway 7.00m
in its almost entire length barring some piaces
where width is between 10'00 m and 19.00 m.
Earthen shoulders of width 1.5 m to 2.0 m are
existing in the entire length except where shoulders
are paved. paved shoulders of 1.5 m to 1 m
exist in two stretches from Km 298.075 to Km
303.000 and Km g3z.o00 to Km 339. overall
condition of existing road is fair baring few stretches.
There are 31 M.ajor / Minor Bridges, 95
Culverts and 24 underpasses.
Temperatures fluctuate from 3@C to 430C in
summers and from g"C to 2g.C in winters. Average
annual rainfall is about 1000 mm. Monsoon
occurs during June to september.
The prevailing terrain along most of the alignment
that the project Flighway traverses through is

Plain / Rolling.
