Prepares students for their role as citizens

and decision makers in a diverse,
democratic society;

People always forget the real reason for social

studies, to create informed US citizens. People
get lost in the history aspect of it but there is so
much more social studies teaches.

1 (WSS)

K12 social studies programs integrate

knowledge, skills, and attitudes within and
across disciplines.

You can use the knowledge you learn from social

studies in such a wide range of other subjects.
For example you can use your historical
knowledge to make more sense of a book in
english.

3 (WSS)

This again shows how much more social studies

This characteristic is the nature and
strength of social studies: recognizing is than just history and politics. It is a life long
set of skills you need to be a world citizen.
the importance of the disciplines and
their specific perspectives in
understanding topics, issues, and
problems, but also recognizing that
topics, issues, and problems
transcend the boundaries of single
disciplines and demand the power of
integration within and across them.

Connections to previous MR: These two articles help disprove some of the childrens options on why
they don't like social studies. Most of the children did not like it because they did not feel as if it was
relevant to their future lives and careers. But according to these two articles social studies is nesscary
for future life. You need it to become a well informed citizen. You can also apply the things you learn in
social studies to many other subjects and things in your career.
