8/8/16 Advanced ELA Agenda!

Learning Target: Review: I can identify

the mood of a story and how the author creates that
mood.
1) Brain Buzzer: Write one 5 sentence paragraph.
Do you think kids your age can be in love with
another person? Explain your reasoning.
2) Mood: What is it and how is it created?
3) Open The Princess Bride book to page 54.
4) We will read and stop periodically to discuss
setting, plot, conflict, and characters.
5) Goal is to get to page 65 today.

Mood: The feeling the author wants

you to get when you are reading.

Mood is created in three ways:

1) Setting
Example: The moon shone down
on the tombstones and the wind
whirled through the branches.
The creaky, iron gate hung
slightly open, as if inviting the
next victim.

2) Description (Word Choice)

Example: Tears slowly trickled
down her cheeks as she held the
hand of her grandmother. She
dabbed her eyes with the
crumpled Kleenex. Her heart
ached and a lump burned her
throat. What would they do
without Grandpa?

3) Situation
Example: She pulled the letter
from the mailbox. Her heart leapt
as she saw he had written back to
her. Her fingers trembled as she
opened the letter from her love.
She read the first words, My
dearest sweet angel and her
heart soared.

You try it.

What is the mood? How is the mood
created?
