Activity #1: What is Science? & How Science Works


Using "Understanding Science 101", Answer the following questions and submit
them in the DROPBOX labeled "Understanding Science Part 1". All questions and
answers should be in complete statements.
1) Why is it a misconception to think of science as a "collection of facts"
2) What is meant by "Science studies the NATURAL world"?
3) Although scientists may take different paths to research, what characteristics are
shared by all scienctific endeavors? What are the CHARACTERISTICS of science that
make it "real" science?
4) Why are accepted scientific ideas considered to be reliable? What can change
this?
5) What is meant by science being a "global community endeavor"?
6) After reading "Discovery: The Spark for Science"...answer this: How did the
observations and discovery of variable stars by Henrietta Leavitt contribute to the
scientific community and spark new research? (Be detailed and GIVE examples)
7) Give a brief description of how Ernest Rutherford's research on the structure of
the atom "fits" into EACH item on the Science Checklist.

Activity #2: Solutions to Coral Bleaching


1. Find and attach a RESEARCH article that deals with a possible
solution to coral bleaching. Make sure to include the source of the
article
2. Why did you choose this article?
3. What is the solution proposed?
4. Which hazard to coral does it address?
5. In your OWN words, explain what coral are and why temperature and
pollutants cause them to bleach and eventually die.
