The C range multistrand system possesses the following main features and characteristics:
Versatility
The system is designed fora large range of applications with the
some type of anchorages
* use ofall internationally available sizes ond grades of 15 mm
stronds, including galvanized ond unbonded strand
* pplication to internal and external presresing
= removable,
= removable and adjustable,
~ removable, adjustable and detensionable.
& Compactness
Very compact anchorages diffuse better the prestressing forces
into the concrete, allowing for a more efficient design by:
+ reducing web thicknesses in beams and box girder, blisters
cond ribs;
+ allowing foro concentration of anchorages atthe end zones;
+ reduction of the dimensions of prestessing anchor blocks,
with minimum stond deviations.
Bl Lightweight jacking equipment
The lightweight compact and automatic C jacks allow for:
+ ca reduction ofthe prstressing anchorage recesses thanks othe
compoct jack noses;
* reduced distonces to walls leading to the reduction of the
porasiic moments and therefore ofthe required reinforcement,
tenabling cn easier placing of concrete;
'* improving the site conditions, such as handling and stressing,

The following main types of ducts are used for the Freyssinet C range tendons:
For internal prestressing
* Corrugated sheath made up of rolled sheet stel strip having a
recommended minimum thickness of 0.3mm. The recommended
duct diameters are indicated for each anchorage (see page 5).
However, the applicable regulations must be checked against the
proposed dimensions. Generally, oment grout is used for corro-
sion protection, sometimes wax or grease (ie. in nuclear reactor
containment buildings). For certain applications, galvanised steel
stip is used
* Plastic corrugated Plyduc? sheath, recently developed ond
patented by Freyssinet to comply with international standards
such as fib and British TR47. It is perfectly cir and watertight.
* None, with the potented Ductless Freyssine! system using
individuclly sheathed and greased strands directly embedded in
the concrete (see page 6).
Radius of curvature
The radius of curvature of the duct shall be a least equal fo:
~ 100 Q; for semi-rigid corrugated steel-strip sheaths;
~3 m for coilable steep-srip sheaths and rig steel pipes.
Exceptionally the radius can be reduced to 20 for rigid steel
pipes as long as
= the sirength of the presiressing steel never exceeds 0.7 Ferg
the tendon zone where the radius is less than 3 m;
= the tendon’s total deviation angle is less than 3x/2 radians;
~ the high curvature zone is considered as a fixed anchorage if
the deviation is greated than /2 radians.
{(@ = intornal diameter of the duct)
Particular case :
In case lubricated sheaths (LFC Freysine) are used and/or special
fight sheaths, it is possible to reduce o semi-rigid corrugated
sheath’s curvature rods, while maintaining a cored ransmission
of the presiressing srengih, The lower limi of he curvature radius
is then Ryn 2 1.35 Va, n being the tendon’s number of strands.
HDPE ducts for external prestressi
@ For external prestressing
* For partially bonded systems (grouted)
~ corrugated steel sheath or steel tube in the concrete zones
(diaphragms and deviators);
high density polyethylene (HDPE) or steel tubes (rarely) in the
zones oulside the concrete. HDPE tubes are standardised in most
countries. Ducting with a pressure rating of 0.63 N/mm’
(6.3 bar) is recommended
+ For unbonded System N°" (double ducting, grouted mest often)
~ sHeel tube for the outer casing in the concrete zones;
~ HDPE for the inner casing in all zones.
* For unbonded System N°2 (single ducing, patented system
using sheathed ond greased strands in a duct which is grouted
before stressing)
~ stel tubes inthe concrete zones;
~ HOPE for zones cutie the concrete (0.4 N/m? series may be used)

= 3Replaceable active R anchorages
These anchorages have a special guide and are used for :
* Internal prestressing without duct (Patented Ductless System), with sheathed and greased
strands. For replaceable tendons it is recommended to use a longer cap with strand length as
required to allow destressing the tendon (the tendon is then also adjustable)”
* External replaceable unbonded prestressing with bare strands, generally grout injected
(External prestressing System N°1).
* External (replaceable or not) prestressing with sheathed and greased strands grouted before
stressing (External prestressing System N°2). With longer cap as above, the tendon is adjustable.”

8 PeasMultistrand CC Couplers
Couplers are used when a continuous structure is built in several phases by extending tendons
which have been already installed, stressed and grouted in a previous section. They are generally
used for internal prestressing.
CC type couplers consist of an active C anchorage (see page 5) in which is interposed, between
the guide and the anchorage block, an indented ring. The secondary tendon is anchored by means
of TI5D type swaged grips. The entire assembly is protected by a cap fixed at one end to the
guide, and seated with a flexible gasket. The other end is fitted with a trumpet for connection to
the duct of the second phase tendon,

™ General notes:
* To take info account construction proctices adopted by certain designers or in certain countries, the typical busting reinforcement has
been defined as being ether plane grids in several planes, o helical spiral) bursting reinforcement.
* The grid or helical reinforcement indicated in the tables are only valid for an isolated anchorage in a prismatic piece (test bloc), for
concrete with fein between 20 and 40 N/mm’. For concrete having fen between 40 and 70 N/mm (cylinder strength) kindly reer
to System C Technical Data handbook.
+ When the anchorages are grouped into one or several lines, continuous reinforcement with on equivalent eross-seional orea must be
provided to link ll the anchorages. Kindly refer to System C Technical Data handbook
* The section of the bursting reinforcement defined inthe tables isa fraction ofthe theoretical value resuting from the calculations
carried out in compliance with most codes. This sectional area is most often complemented by general rebars, nat shown on the figures,
positioned fllowing good consiruction practices, in order to reduce surface cracking, for excmple
* Designers have to check the general equlbrium of the anchorage zones.

The install
* duct placing
* cable placing
* stressing
* grouting (or other corrosion protection method)
For internal prestressing, the ducts are placed before the
concrete is poured. Corrugated steel or plastic ducts are the
most common (see page 4)
For external prestressing, the most commonly used ducls are
steel tubes inside the concrete and HOPE pipes outside the
concrete (see page 4).
The cable is generally placed by pushing each strand into the
duct from one end,
Freyssinet was a pioneer in promoting and developing ths tech-
nique on the early 70's, and con provide advanced pushing
equipment ond fitings
‘A patented high speed, 4 head pushing machine has been
developed for use in large projects. With this machine, its pos
sible o thread 1, 2, 3 oF 4 strands at « time. The operation of
the machine may be controlled from the two ends ofthe tendon
being placed
‘Main characteristics of 4 head pushing machine:
+ Spoed of threading: 1.5 oF 6 m/sec
* Motor: 3 phase, 380 V electric motor.
+ Power consumption: 6 or 24 kW (1.5 or 6 m/sec speed)
* Max threading length: 300 m
* Weight: 1200 kg.
* Overall dimensions:
2.9 m (length)
1.24 m (width)

W Stressing active flat anchorages {see page 7)
The stressing of 3F15, 4F15 and 5F15 anchorages may be done
by either stressing the bundle of strands simultaneously with a
K100 jock, or strand by strand, by using @ monostrand jack
such as the M23 type.
The main dimensions and characteristics of these jacks are
shown below:

The M23 jack may be advantageously used fo stress strand by
strond any C range anchorage when used for the Ductless
System or external prestressing System N°2.
§ Stressing pumps
‘A range of high pressure hydraulic pumps to operate the sires
sing jacks is ovailable.
For instance, the P7.7 pump provides a flow of 11.5 /min et @
minimum presure of 63 MPe.
Contact the local Freyssinet Agent for details and availabilty of
jacks and stressing pumpsInstallation - Corrosion protection
The C range tendons can be protected with any of
the known systems: cement grout, grease, wax
being the most common. Freyssinet can supply all
the necessary equipment to ensure thorough cor-
rosion protection is achieved.
Some special cases require special attention:
pec
@ External prestressing with cement grout
The pressure resisionce of the ducts must be checked before
grouting. This is achieved using compressed air; checking the
lightness with woter is prohibited.
§ Grouting of System N°2 tendons
In this case, the role of the grout is to constitute a spacer to
prevent the plastic sheath surrounding the strand from being
damaged in the contact zones belween strands, due to curvature
reactions. Some properties of the grout such as mechanical
strength (10 N/mm: is sufficient forthe spacing role required)
and shrinkage play only @ secondary role, The grouting takes
place before stressing
Vacuum grouting
Freyssnet was a pioneer ofthe vacuum grouting technique. This has
been used and perfec by our Group for more than twenty years
Is especially suitable for large projets wih dfcut conditions
