Church Summer Fete

Pulls Out all the Stops!
What a Day!

The sun shone and people turned

out to make the perfect combination to once again bring our
Church fete back onto the village
green.
There was a wonderful community
atmosphere with the fairground
rides outside the pub and our
own stalls and attractions on the
main green.
Our takings on the day amounted
to an amazing 1,572. With donations still continuing to come
in we can expect the final figure
to be even higher. I will keep
you updated.

THE GLEANING BELL

Before the days of cheap watches, a lot of field work on Norfolk
farms was regulated by the ringing of the church bell. This was
particularly the case with the strictly-enforced rules governing
gleaning. Gleaning the gathering up of fallen grain after harvest
by the women and children of the parish for their own personal

THE MIKE TILBURY AWARD.
Great Massingham Parish Council are
creating a new award for those residents
of Great Massingham who contribute
their time and services on a voluntary
basis to our community. This is to be
called The Mike Tilbury Award in
memory of the late Mike Tilbury who
gave so much to our village over many
years.
The award will be in the form of a
framed certificate given to the individual
winners and a shield bearing the names
of the recipients. It will be a biennial
award with the winners being chosen by
Great Massingham Parish Council and
announced at the Parish Council AGM.
No current serving member of the Parish
Council will be eligible for this award.
Nomination forms will be available next
month in The Mallard, the Village Store
and the Village Hall.
Completed forms should be placed in the
box at the Village Hall or the Village
Store by the 4th December. Both nominators and nominees must be residents of
Great Massingham. A ndrew Bickerton

MATTERS ARISING!
In the village of Upper Messington, somewhere in West Norfolk, there are problems.
Planning applications, too many ducks and
concerns over dog mess face the Parish
Council; the church is in need of constant
fund-raising to keep it standing; the village
hall desperately needs refurbishing and the
Amateur Dramatic Group are staging their
most ambitious production yet. As with
many small communities, Upper Messington
relies on the same small group of people to
come up with the solutions.
To find out whether they succeed (or not)
come to the Village Hall on either 11th or
12th November when all will be r evealed!
The Toad Patrol and Speed Watch team will
also make an appearance. Any similarities to
persons living or dead are purely intentional!

MORE ABOUT THE CHURCH SUMMER FETE.
Below are some more pictures that capture the lovely atmosphere there was at this years
Church fete. We were really so lucky with the weather and we really appreciate all who
came along to support and contribute to the success of the event.
All of the stalls were well supported with the raffle and tombola being particularly busy.
The Can You Speak Norfolk quiz, kindly compiled by Jim Neve, proved to be a lot of
fun. Several people have commented on this and I do have copies of the answers if anyone would like them.
A huge thank you to everyone who worked so hard setting up and clearing away, to Dorothy and her team for the wonderful lunches and to all the people who managed stalls,
baked cakes and donated so many wonderful prizes.
Lastly, once again, thank you to everyone who turned out and supported us, making it
such a memorable day.

MASSINGHAM BOWLS CLUB

On Saturday 30th July, Massingham Bowls Club held

what will now be an annual event playing for the Derek
Skipper Memorial Trophy.
It was a team event involving four teams of nine players
(three players on each of three rinks). The four teams were
Houghton and Rougham who were invited to join both
Massinghams A and B teams.
The final was played between both Massingham teams
after Massingham A had beaten Houghton and Massingham
B had beaten Rougham. The overall winning team was
Massingham A by two rinks to one.
Malcolm Hipkin received the trophy, on behalf of the winning team, from Lena, Dereks
wife. (see picture) Lena and Dereks three daughters were also present, along with their
families, making it a very pleasant occasion.
Thanks to everyone who prepared the sandwiches, made cakes or supplied other food to
help make the event such a success. Everyone enjoyed the day and we are already looking
forward to next year when the same teams will again be invited to take part.
Thanks for a great day! Malcolm Hipkin

Biodiversity Group
Next Working Party
The water meadow
area was at its best in
July and August, culminating in an excellent
show of purple loosestrife and fleabane that
followed a good display of ragged robin.
Particularly pleasing has been the emergence
of more secretive plant species such as
common figwort, gipsy wort and St Johns
wort. If you would like to help us maintain
and improve the site please come to our
next working party.
This has been arranged for
10 am, Saturday 17th September
at the biodiversity site off Weasenham Road.
The main tasks will be to rake-up the hay
on the south side of the wildflower meadow,
clear the bluebell area and prepare the
ground for planting fritillary and bluebell
bulbs, plus the usual general maintenance.
Gardening gloves and perhaps a border fork
and rake would be helpful but not essential.
As usual, we will stop work at 11 am for tea,
coffee, and biscuits etc. Mike Jackson (520 056)

Many Thanks for the Life of Amy Cross
On 18th July, St. Marys Church, Great Massingham, was full with villagers who had
come to give thanks for her life and to say farewell to Amy Elizabeth Cross, who died
on 30th June, aged 89 years. Amy was one of those very special people. Love permeated
from her and she had played a full and important part in village life over many years.
She loved her family and she loved her community.
Amy was born in Greenwich, south-east London, the fourth child in a family of twelve.
She met her husband to be, Victor, in 1943 when he was stationed at Greenwich Naval
College and Amy was working as a barmaid in the nearby Gloucester Hotel before she
moved on to work at British Ropes, in Charlton, making torpedo nets.
In 1945, she left London, now married to Victor, to live with his sister in Gayton. It was
in August that year that her first child, Victor John, was born at Stow Vicarage, just after
VJ day. Amy did return to London to live with her parents for a while when husband
Victor was posted abroad but when he came out of the navy, in 1948, they set up home
in Little Massingham, living in an ex W.A.A.F Nissan Hut for the next six years until
the new houses were built in Sunnyside Road. Victor and Amy went on to have seven
children that included one set of twins.
Over the years Amy had many occupations, often at the same time! Most notable
amongst those were cleaning Little Massingham Rectory for the Reverend Courfield
Brown, some house work for Lady Joan Birkbeck and cleaning the surgery for Dr Burden. She also took seasonal work picking currants, gooseberries and apples and worked
for Home Help care. She was a hard worker and prepared to do anything to make sure
her family was well cared for.
Before retirement she worked for eighteen years at Anglia Canners in Kings Lynn,
where she was a charge hand. She also arranged trips out and even foreign holidays for
her work colleagues.
Amy selling the Church
After retiring, Amy kept just as busy and often
Fete

remarked that she really enjoyed day trips out
with friends, doing the Church Raffles, cleaning the Church brass, going to the Coronation
Club and Bingo and enjoying many cups of tea
with friends. She loved her family dearly and
was proud of every one of them. She leaves
behind seven children, twelve grandchildren,
seventeen great grandchildren and four Great
Great Grandchildren.
Amys motto was do unto others as you would have them do unto you and she followed
this to the letter. She was an exceptional person and will be sorely missed by us all.
All best wishes to all the members of her family.
Many Thanks..
The Family of Amy Cross would like to thank all friends and relations for their many
tributes and kind messages of sympathy in respect of their sad loss.
Special thanks to Dr Dorling, Nurses Polly and Lucille, the staff at Great Massingham
Surgery, and the Community Nurses.
Thanks also to the Reverend Judith Pollard for her comforting service and to Ray Thornally and his staff for their kindness and excellent Funeral arrangements.
Very special thanks to Glenda, Geordie and Edna for always being there. A mys family

Message To All Parishioners

T A

Resourced, Equipped, Inspired!

Oa season
LLof change
ARISHIONERS
Autumn,
in the natural world, begins in September: the
season of mists and mellow fruitfulness. It is also the season of Harvest
and Harvest Festivals and the challenge of a new school term: new beginnings are exciting, full of promise but can be a bit daunting too! Warm and sunny
weather at this time is often called an Indian Summer.
This summer, particularly the month of August, has been amazing - not weather-wise
but certainly for sporting achievements. As I write this, our brilliant Team GB has won
more medals than ever before in the Olympic Games and we are second in the medals
table, leading everyone except the USA, a remarkable achievement for our small island
and a great source of inspiration.
Hundreds of millions of pounds have been invested in resourcing and training our Olympians, ensuring that our athletes have the best training facilities, are able to attract the
best coaches in the world and have the best physical and psychological support to assist
optimum performance. And it has paid off.
Commitment, resourcing, dedication, courage, determination, single-mindedness, sacrifice; all these qualities play a part in the make-up of a sporting hero. How would it be if
we could apply the same criteria to our own normal lives? Just imagine what we could
achieve if we were as single-minded and dedicated as an Olympic athlete? We all have
the potential to be champions.
But of course it is very difficult, nay impossible, to stay focused at such a peak for very
long without living in a very particular, disciplined way with exceptional support, where
we are permitted to put our own training needs before everything else and this is very
hard for ordinary people to do.
We are all heroes in the eyes of God. Christians are asked to try and live lives worthy of
Jesus Christ, our perfect role model and to always think of the needs of others before our
own: to love our neighbour as ourselves. This is a hugely challenging task in a world
dominated by material priorities and personal gain; putting our own spiritual needs high
on the agenda is problematic to start with, without adding in the needs of others. Without the resourcing of Gods help actively at work in our lives, we dont stand a chance of
achieving anything very much spiritually, let alone a gold medal. But Christians are not
in it for personal gain, just that our lives may reflect the glory of God.
Why dont you come and join us in our churches there are ten to choose from in our
group with a variety of different services and see if our worship speaks to you, especially if you feel there is something you are missing in your life. It may just make all the
difference to your future performance.
