INDIAN INSTITUTE OF TECHNOLOGY KHARAGPUR Department of Electrical Engineering MID TERM EXAMINATION (AUTUMN) 2015-2016 Date: 14.09.2015. Time: 2hours Full Marks: 50 No. of Students: 100 + Power Electronics Sub. No. BE31011 Answer any FIVE questions ‘All questions carry EQUAL MARKS MAKE SUITABLE ASSUMPTIONS, WHEREVER NECESSARY 1. _A fally-controlled, two-pulse thyristorised converter is fed from a 100V, 50 Hz supply. The ‘rigger angle is 31°. The load has R = 150 and X,= 2502 connected in series. ‘Sketch the output voltage wave shapes and find its average value. Deduce the expression for current in any complete half-cycle and find its average value. ‘Why does the trigger circuit for this converter need isolation? Where and how is it provided? 2. A half-controlied, —_ two-pulse thytistorised converter, Fig Prob 2, is fed from @ 100V, SO Hz supply, with an R-L-E load of 152, a= 150 and E = 25V. The trigger R= angle is 60" Find the expression for the current for the complete first halfeycle. Indicate how this current flows through the network in each mode. Sketch de voltage and currents. Also show the voltage and current in the ac lines. What benefits does a haf-controlled converter have aver a full-converter? 3. Explain with the significant waveforms the ‘operation of the de — de “chopper” in Fig. Prob 3. Ifthe load is a constant current sink of 10 Amps, Calculate the minimum value of C that will be able to commutate Thy, if the tum-off time specified for it is 10 secs. Sketch 100 V] waveforms of voltage across and current through Thy. How is the output voltage controlled here? Sketch a complete typical trigger circuit for the chopper. 4, __ With respect to a 2-pulse converter explain the cosine-wave-crossing method of triggering. How can this method be used for the control ofa variable voltage, variable frequency cycloconverter? What are the restrictions regarding its frequency range of operation? ‘Two identical ac-de converters are connected in CASCADE. At what trigger angles should they be operated to deliver 0.6 pu output power at 0.6 pu rated voltage to optimize reactive power? What is saving in reactive power (vat) wrt the converters delivering the same power/voltage at equal trigger angles? 5. Obtain the phase and line-line voltages (for a balanced resistive load) of a 3-phase VSI working ‘with 180° conduction period for each transistor. What are the modes in which an ASCI inverter operates? If the operating frequency is increased, what changes take place? Explain with relevant waveforms. Sketch a typical trigger circuit, How does this CSI handle the reactive power demand of the load? 6. A thyristor is connected in series with R = 20 and L = 0.3 H. The latching current, I, of the thyristor is 25 mA. What is the minimum width of the gate pulse which will tum the thyristor ON? Illustrate the operation of a McMurray-Bedford VSI with relevant waveforms emphasizing why the thyristors require wide gate pulses.
