Everyone has someone in their life that supports and inspires them. In the book
The Power of One there are many characters that have a positive influence on
Peekay. In this essay I will argue that Doc has a positive influence on Peekay in
the book The Power of One. I will do this by describing Doc, explain Doc teaching
Peekay about knowledge and explain Doc encouraging Peekay to drop his
camouflage.
Doc is an important character in the book The Power of One. Doc is a German
professor who lives in Barton. Doc is a botanist and in his spare time he collects
cactuses for his garden. He is a father figure/teacher for Peekay. In the text you
can see Doc teaching Peekay about the real world The vines will try to choke
your ideas and it will die, most people you meet in life will be vines. This means
that most people you meet will have a negative influence on you. It was
important for Peekay to know this because he was afraid of being bullied, Doc
comforted Peekay by saying that everyone gets bullied. Doc is an important
character because he inspires Peekay and helps him get through his first years of
school in Barberton.
Doc teaches Peekay about knowledge. Doc and Peekay like to go on hikes up in
the bushes to find important plants and record their location in a little notepad.
Doc likes to use this time to teach Peekay about plants and animals and life, he
sometime does this by using plants as metaphors. In the text we see Doc
teaching Peekay about knowledge The more you know, the more you can
control your destiny. This means that if you know more, then you have more
opportunities in life. This encourages Peekay to want to know more, he wants to
learn more of a variety General Knowledge.
Doc encourages Peekay to drop his camouflage. Doc noticed that Peekay was
getting bad results in school and he didnt understand why Peekay wasnt putting
in 100%. When Doc confronted Peekay about this he told him that the reason he
doesnt reveal his intelligence is because he wants to fit in. Doc replied by saying
To be smart is not a sin, to be smart and not use it, that Peekay is a sin. This
means that if you have a skill and dont develop it then you are wasting your
talent. In a bible story three servants were given talents gold two of them went
out and developed their talents until they came back with plenty more, the other
servant buried his talents and came back with the same amount. These two texts
have similar messages. Peekay took Docs advice and his grades improved.
In this essay I have argued that Doc has a positive influence on Peekay in the
book The Power of One. I have done this by describing Doc, explain Doc teaching
Peekay about knowledge and explain Doc encouraging Peekay to drop his
camouflage. We have learnt that most people you meet will have a negative
influence on you, if you know more then you have more opportunities in life and
if you have a skill and dont develop it then you are wasting your talent.
